In the State of Idaho (where I live now) the original "Sales Tax" was implemented to support the schools.
Then the money was rolled over into the general fund.
Then the tax was raised, periodically, to support the "Schools" again.
Last year the budget was ballanced with the tobacco ripoff, 200 million to Idaho. This money was supposed to be used to support medical expenses of smokers.
This year there were no available funds to alleviate the sagging budget, so another 1% sales tax was implemented.
At least they were honest about what it was to be used for, balancing the budget!
Now we are up to 6% sales tax.

26 cents was added on to a pack of cigarettes, to support the debillitating effects of smoking.

Another percentage was added to liquor sales, and over the counter alcohol sales.

We have a Hotel/Motel tax that supports sagging sales in entertainment and promotional aspects of tourism.

A Federal exise tax on sporting firearms and ammunition.

These are just a few that pi$$ me off!

I know there are others too numerous to mention.
