Sounds good.

I too was looking recently for an S4 avant (booted so my Chocolate Lab can ride too). Very interested to know how the car has been transformed with the bigger turbos.

all the best.

I had a burn up with an S4 he was quick of the line but my M3 soon reeled it back in

i love my M3 looked at S4 Avant but it's a bit of an old mans motor, maybe in a few years

Nick

Thanks for your insightful comments......I agree that it will never be a sports car but it makes a useful sports saloon.....especially with Big Brakes, Stiffer suspension and 400BHP.

A scooby is never going to be a sports car either and is not a great drivers car come to that.....but people here seem to like it

Oh yes ....Nick....this is from someone who's been in my car around Bedford...

Jeff, you were eating Imprezas on track before the new turbos, I can't imagine what it'll be like afterwards - but I'm willing to test it as a passenger again

the reason why I went for a Beemer is that it's German and built well. Mate has a Scooby which is quick but feels so ****ty inside, the plastic is just plain nasty and that gear gator, reminds me of the old XR4i. feckin awful

Audi and BMW are in a different league. it's called class

Jeff agree whole heartedly, S4 is perfect all round transport, what other car can you get such a good balance of speed comfort and quality, and the sound of V6 just makes it esp with the miltek

Nick, yes the S4 did have a weakness in the turbo/manifold area but Audi cured and acknowledged most of the issues in the end

What car is perfect look at the issues on the e46 M3 and the Engine's

The Audi S4 avant is in a league of it's own you can't compare a scooby estate with an audi avant

Now a Beemer Touring with an M3 engine in it with no turbo hassles now that would blow the doors off an S4

Like your thinking carpet cleaner, I had an M3 convertible for a while and loved it

I think that blowing the doors off is a little steep it will be very closely matched, just look at the new S4 vs M3 it doesnt get any closer!

What I love about the Biturbo S4 is the surge you get when those turbo's kick in, it gives the biggest sensation of speed and smile factor ever, but I guess it is all boils down to personal preference

Horses for Corses, i had full MTM suspension, yoko AVS and MTM chip, UUC short shifter on my S4 and the steering and pedals still felt that they where attached by 6" of jelly to the car, very inert driving enviroment (like all modern Audis) and hit had MASSIVE understeer, this is mainly due to the fact the large and heavy torsen diff hasnt had much development in 20 odd years and its postion means the V6 engine sits quite high up with a large amount of its mass over the front axel. This was most noticable to me in the fact the "turning / rotational point" of the audi feals like its in the middle of the front bumper where as in my STi it feals like its just behind the gearbox. Got loads of vids and pics of mine at coombe, donnington, brands, silverstone, sneterton etc etc.

It was to me the worst drivers car i ever had or have ever driven. Fast in a straight line the only time i ever enjoyed it was doing over 160+ where its so stable.

RS4 was much the same only the engine was to die for, best enigine i have ever owned in one of the worst drivers cars, my RS4 had so many faults that after 18 months it was rejected and went back to Audi.

I love the way my STi drives i allways get out of it with a big grin the turn in speed is insane compared to my Audis and i brake 30% closer as well. I am having the same problem with the protenzas on my STi that i had with my S4s Pilot Sports in that there starting to loose chuncks. In 18 months of STi ownership i have had zero faults with the car.

yep the STis far from perfect, it has very dodgy styling, the steering can be vague when not under a good load, low qaulity panels and interior but im happy to sacrafise these for the grin a minute it gives me.

I know from my ex web site that modern Audis are either cars you love or hate.

now give me an RS4 with more rear legroom that drove like my STi and didnt go wrong and i would be happier than a pig in the brown stuff.

i miss my avant boot badly but i will resist getting a V8 S4

Nice one Wiltshire

I'm a bit of joker but I know my cars. German is the way to go as they do the mileage and still feel well screwed together. I'd have loved a Ur-quattro 20v but too much dosh

VW/Audi have always been 'my thing' but after the Corrado I needed a rag top and the Audi is fwd and not what I wanted. Could have gone Japanese and had something manic like the S2000 Honda jobbie but too much cash they are 20k and 2 seats only so the M3 was the motor

Like I say Jap stuff is Ok but just doesn't have the same quality feel like you get with the German stuff

no i have actual pics of my RS4 doing 186mph (final drive calcd speed not speedo reeding)

nope just extremly disapointed by Audi, the inert drving enviroment, the massive understeer, the terrible mechanical relaibility and the apathetic customer support, not what i would expect when spending over 90 grand with a company on 2 cars in an 18 month period.

However we are all different and have different values and requirements from our autos.

I totally agree about the finish quality but it does come at a price premium. There reliabilty is very poor compared to the japanese cars.

I had Audi 90 20V sport (very rare in the UK something like 180+bhp) and it was a fantastic car. Audi have lost the plot on drivability thou when the accountants took over.

I do love the M5 and R32.

most cars especialy 4WD cars have a tendency to understeer when pushed. What do you expect?

At the end of the day the Audis in Avant form are estate cars at the end of the day and you can't overcome the laws of physics. They are bound to have compromises, when compared with the kind of car that traditonally have been the only way to experience the same out and out performance i.e 911's for example

OMG the f*cking Cleaner is talking sense

and the 911 on the limit is more likely to stuff you through a hedge backwards...... I nearly came unstuck a couple of times in my old 911

To drive a 911 on the limit takes a very brave man, but for covering ground on a day to day drive, I find the Audi a hell of a lot faster than my 911 ever was

I actually tracked S4 sedans and S4 Avants back to back at coombe and the Avants handle better, probably the extra weight in the back compensates for the engine overhang in the front, if memory servers me well 70% of all S4s sold worldwide where Avants. Most of the mag articles at the time confimed this.

My S4 and RS4 would understeer on every corner in my normal road driving mode, i corner much harder and faster in my STi and it has never understeered once, well i only got it to understeer once and i had to do something very stupid on a slow tight corner in the wet.

Infact the back allways comes out on the STi long before the front breaks away, i must be doing something wrong >.<

I cant get on with 911s at all i too suffer from the backwards into a hedge senario. My friend has a heavily modifed MK1 5 speed turbo and is one hell of a driver, on track not much can keep up with it.

I think there a hard beast to master but the rewards seam to be there if you are brave enough to do it and can afford the bills from the errors on the way there.

The 944/968 & the 986 are the best handling Porsches....the 911 in all guises has the engine in the wrong place....

Jeff, true enough, but that "wrongness" has been engineered out, certainly in the latest models, to produce one of the finest handling sports cars you can buy.
