Thx vm. Are you guaranteed a decent view, or could you be 53rd back in a 54 deep crowd? Sounds like these things are a big draw, so i don't wanna go all that way to stare at somebody's back!

Tel, - there is always loads of space - not like F1 or anything - you can get as close as you like - even in pit/paddock area..

I even walked round to the start line - as long as you keep to the side they didn't seem to mind..

Don't really understand the appeal of drag racing, but can see that something that extreme would be an experience to see/hear.

Might have to look into going along one day.

Cool

Telboy, go see it, you'll not regret it. The best bit is when you are walking through the pits when they test run a fueller, I defy anybody not to jump the first time they hear it, The only thing I've ever experienced that was louder, was Aerosmith at the NEC

Another interesting fact for you: Even though they are based on water-cooled motors, they run without water, on the principle that they aren't running long enough to need it.

When they race at dusk, the exhausts look like 8 acetylene torches, with the fuel still burning on it's way out

@ Brickboy, they depend on it, the fuel pick-up is in the rear of the tank

F**k it, I think I'm gonna go myself in September, I've not been for a couple of years

Not been for a few years either. Could be a trip coming on I think.

For anyone who thinks its boring just go the once. You will be surprised at the awesome speeds these things achieve on such a short piece of tarmac.

Chip.

Mildly impressive...... but a standard UK Scooby would easily have it in the twisties.

Heard something about those big Hoosier tires they fit. apparently they twist around the rims like an elastic band on launch. its the only way they dont explode. last time i saw draggers when I was about 10 in Canada.

I think I want to get some mates together and go down for the crack

Get down to The Pod for a European round.

We were there when Barry Sheavills recorded the first sub-5 second pass (at a tad under 300mph) in the UK. Absolutely awesome.

You don't hear top fuellers. You FEEL them, usually somewhere in the middle of your chest. A bit like a controlled bomb going off.

Always loads of interesting stuff running as well as Top Fuel dragsters, such as Top Fuel bikers (certified insane) and Pro Street (road legal stuff running sub 10's. Forget your Ferrari's). Someone was making noises a few weeks ago in Other Marques about some Escort Cossie running IIRC 11 second passes or something. Last time I was at the Pod, a little white Fiat 600 was running rather quicker than that, complete with numberplates and a valid tax disc.

Apparently the ground movement from the noise can be measured on the Richter scale.

Red face

Below are the current top five times and top speeds for the NHRA Top Fuel cars.

Basically your looking at 0-330mph in less than 4.5secs................Just trying saying that outloud then think about what you've just said, and the forces involved in going that fast.

Rank Name E.T.
1 Kenny Bernstein 4.477
2 Doug Kalitta 4.481
3 Larry Dixon 4.486
4 Andrew Cowin 4.490
5 Mike Dunn * 4.494

Rank Name Speed
1 Doug Kalitta 333.91
2 Tony Schumacher 333.08
3 Larry Dixon 332.75
4 Kenny Bernstein 332.18
5 Mike Dunn * 331.61

That's one of the facts on that email - it's not fuel, it's raw hydrogen being burnt, disassociated from water vapour particles in the air by the searing heat of the exhaust.

Nimbus - you'd be suprised at how expensive it is when the big boys are running - £30 IIRC

Cool

Another one, from somewhere else:

A fuel pump for a Top Fuel dragster and Funny Car delivers 65 gallons of fuel per minute, equal to eight bathroom showers running at the same time.
Though it needs to, because:

Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars consume between four to five gallons of fuel during a quarter-mile run, which is equal to between 16 and 20 gallons per mile. They use 10 to 12 gallons of fuel for a burnout, back-up to the starting line and quarter-mile run
