My 13 year old 1.9 205 GTi will stick to a Golf Gti MkVI like glue in a straight line, much to their drivers annoyment

And the V5 model to for that matter, as my bro in law has one (hi Iain ) only the Pug wins hands down on the handling!

the Mrk4 Turbo always felt faster than other cars between 70 and 90 on the mway, because you could drop third and pretend you were going fast, when in fact in wasn't.Forth came around 90

i think Gtis excitement is due to overdosing on torque

the Golf turbo feels faster than it actually is

This is all very true lots of torque, but he has come clean it has a whopping 280bhp under the bonnet, god knows how but who gives a **** it flies and the suspension has had some mods!

But best of all its 100% standard on the outside with the orginal VeeDub alloys, just how they should be "best left alone"

It worries me that you were not sure if the car had been modified before now when in fact it almost has double what it left the factory with

280bhp through the front wheels?????

SCARY!

Tiggers? Why do you hate BMWs so much? Not trying to start a slanging match at all mate, just curious. Dont consider me as a typical BMW driver (i'll admit there are some to55ers out there who drive BMWs) i'm just an enthusiast of the marque. Like i said just curious....

Not really mate, It depends on the car & the traction control system, Leon Cuprs R's for example are fine even in the wet at that sort of power as the standard traction control is great- not intrustive & rev cutting other than say 1st geat out of a wet junction!

I've driven Golfs at that power that have had full race logic traction contol fitted & that is brill, whereas new MINI's at near that sort of bhp level are awfull, as the traction contol is always cutting in & I find it very intrusuive.

280 bhp & FWD with no form of traction contol is however just bloody mental particualy if the car has- like most FWD cars have unequal length driveshafts (ie a TT engine in a Golf and the standard golf 'box is kept =torque steer city...

M3 Evo,

What do you drive btw? Just kidding.

I have no real beef with the cars themselves, but it's all the hype, image, marketing BS that gets me down. I'm not going to rake up old ground, but if you're interested try this thread.

FLASHBACK REMINDER from the late 1980s:

"The Golf GTi will be along in a second" ........

Classic line from the MG Maestro adverts of the period .....

No probs Tiggers, know where you're coming from! I dont claim anything about my car, just enjoy driving it and it suits my needs perfectly, i can honestly say hand on heart i dont think theres a better car to suit me out there. Like people say, its not how fast you go, its how big your smile is whilst doing it!

You gotta admit that there is kind of the same stigma attached to the scooby etc though, look at how many posts on here say "yeah but a scooby would have it in the twisties yawn yawn" Understandable really, as anyone is going to be biased to what they drive.... (which is what, in your case??)

ps moved on from the M3 Evo i had when i first joined, now got an M5 Awesome car!

M3 Evo,

No worries - you will be cured in time ;-) Just kidding.

In answer to your question I'm currently tooling round in a Honda Integra Type R which I bought as a sort of stop gap after some drunken fool decided he wanted to drive like he was in France and wrote my Elise off big time (3 full spins along a stone wall - not a scratch on me, but car was totalled).

Had five years of Scoobs and still get to drive my wife's UK MY99 every now and then. Next target for me is an Evo - basically I just like performance and handling , couldn't give a toss about ride, interior etc. Integra is a better car than I thought though so may hang on to it for a few more months yet.

Regards,

tiggers.

jamesa .... er, NO ... Maestros were not available until a year later in 1983 so can't match your aged car with a Maestro. My 89 Maestro Turbo still OK though. Oh yes, my old company 1980 Maxi IS still going strong in the hands of another local owner who keeps it in good shape. Does that count? If you're not too young, you may remember the good old Maxi .... it's the 1960s car which inspired the clones later known as the Rabbit or Golf .... but it had independent suspension all round .... unlike some cars I could mention .....

Enjoy your Golf ... not bad motors apparently ..... it'll be along in a second ..... that's a cracker! .... such stuff now politically wrong in "namby-pamby-bambi" today .... shame eh? ...

Oh yes, the 1982 MG Metro I gave to my son is still going strong too! Does that count? Finally, my seven week old MG ZS is still going strong but that doesn't count either I s'pose ........

A standard Cavalier Turbo will pull away from a 330i beyond 80mph, the same Cav will destroy a Golf GTi. A Golf VR6 4Motion will stay with a standard Cav Turbo upto 120, and again, the Cav will pull away. The 4Motion is leagues ahead of the GTi.

Whilst the new Golf's are nice cars, they are way over lardy for the size of the engines, hence VW had to redo the Petrol GTi because the Diesel TDi kept wasting it!

As for 130mph, even thats not particularly clever considering the cars power, it should at LEAST be tapping on the door of 140mph.

I'm not writing this to wave the 'Vauxhall' flag (as I know its not a brand particularly appreciated judging by some of the threads), but as an example, it clearly shows that Golf you were in isn't all that special or particularly fast.

How the hell can't you notice a GTi with 280bhp !!!

I mean what would you have to do to it to get that, a chip tune would only give about 180-190 tops, so where does the other 100bhp come from in parts you cant see when you looked at the engine compartment and outside ?

MG's like British Leyland are a thing of the past, in ten years time we'll be talking about them in the past tense. The deal with Tata for the new Metro and the disaster with China Brilliance have done for MG.

That and the fact they don't make any decent cars. Anyone who doubts this look at their falling sales for evidence.

FreeT- nearer 210-220bhp is pos for a later gtiT or 230-240 if you swap the KO3 turbo for a KO4 & re-map to suit. Would look like stock under the bonnet.

He's also got different suspension of you thought it was stiff, coz a standard MKiv Gti wallows like a fat bird on a water bed

GTi im a bit confused me old china, coz you said several times that this was a standard GTi!!

Now a standard 150 Mkiv GTi is a piece of wallowy gutless old kack of the highest order and would have trouble outrunning a milkfloat, but with so many mods available they can be transformed into very diferent cars.

So just to clarify your mates totally standard GTi had a diferent turbo been chipped & had the suspension sorted!!! but its standard??
