I have taken over from BURR with H&S.

I dont seem to be able to get the email addresses of the people who posted earlier.

Please email me at groupbuy@ilkleymotorclub.org.uk and I will give you the prices H&S have agreed and how to go about paying.

We need 10 or more orders (Classic or New age or combination) to get the discount.

Cheers, Rich. (Sorry to all those who's hopes I raised with my earlier question)

I've had one or two distractions over the last few weeks, which mean I won't be able to participate.

Good luck to all.

Yo Peanuts!.

The splitter is a curved plate that is welded into the neck of the downpipe and butts up tight into the turbo, and seperates the wastegate gas and main exhaust gas for a few inches into the downpipe, allegedly gaining power / torque etc. by smoothing the outlet gas flow and reducing turbulance.

Sort of the best of both worlds of a single wide neck downpipe and a twin downpipe.

I think H&S will do the splitter mod to suit normal TD04, TD05 turbo's for something like £25 - £40 a downpipe, into their wide mouth downpipe.

Better check first tho!

Neil

Would one of these downpipes connect to a Gruppe header o.k? (I assum the downpipe connects to the header?).

Yes, how silly of me... So I take it that this is how it all connects.

Header to Up pippe to down pipe to centre section to back box?

...except there's a turbo in the middle of all that. Or, at least there should be ! It goes...

headers -> up-pipe -> turbo -> downpipe -> centre section -> backbox

Some good interest so far.
When I get home tonight I will see if Ian at H&S has sent me some more info re: splitter mod and update the thread.
I will have to re-email him about up-pipes.
I think I have mailed all those who are interested.
BTT again.

I would be interested, however I'm not too keen on UK hand made jobbies Can't weld like the japs and Americans), I understand that H&S are of good quality but are there any other options.

mrt do one as well with the splitter already put in [www.mrt rally.com] what is important is that the splitter in the downpipe is curved the right way around so the outlet of the wastegate is smooth flowing!! Technical exerpt from mrt;

In this feature we explain how the wastegate works and what happens at the outlet of your turbo

MRT Turbo exhaust Splitter.
A part that we take for granted here at MRT, but that is still not that common in the Subaru Exhaust parts industry is the custom splitter off the turbo.

HOW IT WORKS
GRAPHICAL IMAGE LEFT
The image shown (left) depicts the outlet of the turbo (Gold) and the exhaust (grey) The splitter shown (light blue) is what we fabricate into our exhausts now for years, but often is not by other suppliers (due to cost)

SUBARU TURBO
(Image Above right)
The total aim of the outlet of the turbo (fan wheel) is to flow as much as possible. Its important that flow is also maximised for the wastegate (round valve).
On full boost the wastegate is wide open (dumping excess exhaust gasses to allow your ECU to control boost) refer last months September newsletter on how boost is controlled you will need Adobe Acrobat for this
The gasses exiting the wastegate valve are directed at 90 deg (by the angle of the valve) into the exit path of the gas exiting the main turbine wheel (large round outlet)

STANDARD EXHAUST
(Image left)
On a standard Impreza exhaust the gas is forced through a restrictive 90deg bend, into a 2 1/4 inch pipe then down into the catalytic converter. The standard outlet is very restrictive, hence the reason why you can make good gains with more open aftermarket designs, the trick is to make the BEST gain!

OTHER BRANDS
(Image right with blue background)
This is an "average design" as it has a splitter, however the flange that bolts to the turbo has a lot of wasted space that could flow more but restricts the exhaust gas flow plus the wastegate outlet is restricted as the splitter is welded on the wrong way around. (it wont "scoop" the exiting gases from the open wastegate valve)

(Image left)
This design is a classic, aftermarket part, no splitter, and a simply huge combined wastegate turbo outlet. This would probably perform better than the other assy. with the splitter as it has more capacity to flow heaps of exhaust gas. What it does not have is any splitter at all and its this design that is often modified by third party workshops after the parts are purchased in the first place.
MRT Performance offer this part as a low cost "economy" downpipe, (part #musse033te) for clients who don't have a budget for the better design.

MRT PERFORMANCE SOLUTIONS
(Image right)
This is the MRT Performance down pipe with splitter, flexible joint but no cat converter, (part #MUSSE033TS) Depending on wether you have a GC or a GD chassis our part numbers will vary. Options are we can supply with a cat converter in the down pipe, the length of the turbo collector varies.

FACTORY and AFTERMARKET "cat Back" FITTING parts
(Image Left)
MRT also offer a down pipe that is interchangeable with the factory part and will fit at the (ball Flexible) factory joint.
The great benefit of this is if you have another brand of "cat back" system, you can easy update to a MRT downpipe and it will simply bolt up to your existing aftermarket cat back system!
OR if you wish you can fit a MRT downpipe to your factory standard system, and take advantage of the benefits of the new downpipe, whilst saving on not replacing the rest of your exhaust.
(part #musse033tb)

DEAL
Order any of above parts via the links (click the part numbers) and MRT will pay for the freight, in Australia

Tips and Suggestions

Easy Power
If you feel inclined and want some power to upgrade your turbo or non turbo car then try this, the resonator inside the right hand wheel arch on your car not only reduces noise but it also sucks power from your car.
This modification will improve turbo car's more noticeably than non turbo cars, but is worth the effort!
Here are two pictures of the GC and GD Impreza Turbo Resonators so you know what to look for, you will need access to the inner wheel arch of your car. The factory airbox will then suck air from the whole inner guard, instead of through the complicated box as shown.

Question

My car is a totally standard MY99. How much louder will it be with a decatted downpipe ? Will it get on my nerves on long motorway journeys ?

If you want splitter mod ask Ian when you place order and they will fit the splitter into the DP (I assume this maybe turbo/model specific, or maybe not?)

I better get him phoned with my order.....

Come on call Ian at H&S and get one ordered, only 7 more needed (if my maths right after several glasses of amber nectar).
