What's an average range for a full tank?

standard MY00 here, takes about £40 of Optimax to fill and generally get around 300 miles before the fuel light comes on.
did a motorway run last week and sat at 80-85 for most of the way - light came on at 230.

when people say "***** out driving" is this meant literally, as I find the zipper on my trousers really chaffs.
MY03 wrx, have to really engange warp drive to get the car to do less than 300 miles to the tank, average is about 330.
I was expecting about 250-260 so my budget is very happy.

**** ME ..... are my brakes binding OR WHAT!!? I only get 180 - 200 on a full tank (MY 98, de-cat and Firestorm, and ITG). All driving is around town with QUICK blasts up and down Notts ringroad ( where there are NO cameras!)(at the mo...)
What am I doing wrong??

I normally get about 220 - 240 from a tank (brim to yellow light) in everyday use, mostly with Optimax.
Got 320 before light came on (in fact still in the lower bottom quarter), on a run back home to Scotland from Reading. That was with BP S/UL, doing 90 - 95 most of the way.
MY03 WRX standard.

MY02 - top half of the tank gets me about 120 miles, bottom half about 60 - 80 miles. I don't remember ever getting more than 220 miles to a tank. Is there something wrong with my car? I don't thrash it, but I don't do 56mph on motorways either.
