Golf/Corrado VR6

Scott ref what other cars to look at I would say a Porsche 944, you can get a lot of 944 for the price of a Corrado storm. I would recomend a Lux 2.5 or 2.7 on a smaller budget ie £1500-£5k then if you have £5k plus go for the S2 as the best allrounder.
see 944 buyers guide here-
www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=6090
944s can rack up the sort of miles that would murder most cars & if you don't see 250,000 miles from a 944 engine that has been well looked after I would be supprised. I drove one with 350,000 on the clock on orginal un rebuilt engine & other than a very worn drivers seat it felt like 50,000 miles.. running cost similar to a vr6 corrado & most parts are cheaper as long as you use porsche specialists not a main dealer.
Bit of a blanent plug here as my S2 is in the classifieds here-www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?ThreadID=226315
as I'm hunting for a sweet 968Clubsport.
Back to the Corrado- the VR6 corrado engine is not the best at high miles, the golf lump does fair better with miles but a golf vr6 is a wallowy old boat as standard& not very quick and awful on fuel I wouldnt want one myself but hey we are all different
Im running a Corrado at the mo alongside my 944S2 and both have similar interor space, both handle great in there own ways, the corrado is a very very sweet front wheel driver.
However ref rear wheel drive a 944 is posibly the most balanced rear wheel driver ever built (excluding the 968CS )
I say go 944 & if you buy wisely you wont regret it.

Scott
I did the opposite change to you about 4 months ago - went from 5dr golf vr6 to clio cup!! I was able to do this because my little boy is nearly 5 and able to clamber into the back and strap himself in (well, nearly), so need for 5 doors diminished.
I found the golf to be a great car - it followed 2 205 gti's, and 3 vtec'd civics (inc a vti) and was my favourite out of all of them until I got the cup.
Pro's: Quality is great, low down torque means driving is effortless, yet the noise you get if you rev it is so intoxicating that it's addictive. Quiet, refined, roomy.
Con's: Economy is dire - I did manage more than 30mpg once on a steady 75mph 200 mile round trip, but during the course of the other 30,000 miles I did I got an average of 28mpg which would frequently dip to nearer 25. Suspension is wallowy (if that's a word), and you roll around like hell - I had mine lowered 30mm and fitted uprate bilstein shocks - cost about £500 all in, and it worked a treat.
Tuning potential - think there's a supercharger kit out there for about £2k which will give you a reliable 230-250bhp.
Good luck. Aiden Piers (www.aidenpeers.com) seem to specialise in used vr6s, but are pricey - worth a visit to get some test drives perhaps though? Go for a highline with leather if you can - i didn't and regretted it - aircon/climate would have been a real boon in such a dark-interior'd car.

Depending on where abouts you are in the UK, my brother is about to sell his VR6 Golf (N plate), 5 door with a mere 57k on the clock.
He's in B'ham if you're interested.
