Its not just smoking around the children which is bad for them but also the mother smoking during pregnancy is passing on the injurious chemicals etc in the bloodstream to the unborn baby. This goes for alcohol consumption too of course.

Red face

There was a boy no older than 10/11 years old sparking up a *** in town today

A couple of us looked at him in disbelief but in general no one took any notice. I thought it was terrible, he had **** and a lighter and looked like he'd been doing it for years

Wonder what the parents are like

My missus was in labour for 72 hours this week and went through hell before having a c section and producing our beautiful daughter Mya, she took so much pain, I'm in awe of what she went through.

In the same ward was a woman who was expecting twins who had minor problems and she was in there for a few days monitoring, I popped out in the evening for a break and a smoke and who is out there opening her 20 bennys chuffing away the preggo with the twins,WTF I wanted to slap the selfish cow, how could a parent do that to their kids, i felt sorry for her other 5 kids who were visiting her she had probably smoked throughout their pregnancies

Crapping hell....must be a bit crowded at the top of that Ivory Tower.

Both me and the mrs smoke. She smoked (albeit cut down) through the pregnancies of our 2 year old and 3 month old.

Both are healthy and happy. Our 2yr old is taller and more intelligent than average (according to our Health Visitor - so take that as you like)
My guess is both our boys are gonna be taller than me (6ft) and a fair bit broader.

What I don't see here, is a few interesting alternative theories on smoking whilst pregnant.

1. It may reduce the oxygen reaching the baby by a small proportion. And I mean small.

2. Withdrawal symptoms in the mother can cause the baby more harm than the reduced amount of nicotine reaching it from the mother's bloodstream.

3. The baby does go into "cold turkey" after being born. Due to No. 2, this effect is nowhere near as bad a "leaflet readers" would have you believe.

We both still smoke, but either outside or at (and out of) the window. Rooms don't even smell of smoke.

And Yes, if everyone gave up smoking tomorrow, the NHS would collapse in a heap due to lack of funds.

And for all the do-gooders. Think on this.

If/when smoking finally gets outlawed completely, what harmful addictive habit that destroys lives in more ways than tobacco do you think the fanatical element will go after next ?
Prohibition rules !

I'm off to the pub

chaz, im 6ft6 and both the kids are tall for their age so if they are stunted its a good thing...unless we want giant kids!

we are expecting our 3rd soon and Mrs Tiggs hasnt smoke for 3 years so we'll see if the 3rd is cleverer than 1 and 2....if it is then maybe you're right

TK - youve gotta agree that a women who smokes whilst pregnant is far more likely to do some harm to her child than the occasional smoke inhalation from her partners cigarettes? Im not saying either is right but that the two arent comparable in their effects.

One of my girlfriends best mates was a heavy smoker and as soon as she knew she was pregnant she stopped smoking. Her husband stopped smoking in the house and has now given up completely too and not missing it.

Do you smoke TK?

Simon.

In one of my earlier posts...

In fact, if you knew me, you'd know I about as vehemently anti-smoking as it is possible to be.
Do I smoke? What do you think?

I also think it's another boringly typical Scoobynet response to have a go at women for something and say it's "different" for the men. I don't know why I continue to be surprised by it though, since it's a consistent theme on this site.

Yes, I accept that smoking whilst pregnant is in a different league to exposing a pregnant woman to second hand smoke. However, both are potentially harming the child, so to say that one is disgusting, and the other is acceptable seems blinkered beyond belief.

I never had a go at women. I was just pointing out why people tend to go for the women first without thinking that it is both partners responsibility. You could go even further and argue that pregnant women shouldnt frequent pubs and clubs due to the amount of smoke they will inhale. At the end of the day this comes down to how much parents want to look out for their child.

If my girlfriend got preggers and carried on smoking I would be pulling the **** out of her mouth and ripping them up.

P1Fanatic, why assume I meant it was you having a go? My comment is on the general tone of this thread rather than on specific posts by specific people.

My point is I don't think it's fair to expect a woman to give up things she enjoys in order to have children without expecting the father to make the same sacrifices. After all, having children does usually require two people and it's not unreasonable for the woman to expect some support.

May I just say that if the father goes outside for a smoke then he wouldnt be inflicting any possible damage to his unborn child whereas if the pregnant woman went outside for a smoke she would!!! Easy really.

My mrs doesn't smoke but I do - outside and away from the kids!!

Scooby96, if your wife had been a smoker, would you have told her she had to quit when she was pregnant, but that you weren't willing to? If so, very supportive of you.

My bf smokes, i do not. Women who smoke while they are pregnant, i view as entirely selfish.

If i become pregnant in the future, i would want to do everything i could to PROTECT my child not inflict a load of cr@p on it. However i do understand women who smoke can have perfectly healthy babies, its just not a risk i'd be willing to take.
