Classic or Bugeye.......Thats the question!

About to go on hols - bet this thread is still running when I return!
Go for Classic IMHO as proper intro to what Scoobies were originally about (concurring with several others above) and yes the good Classics (agree MY00) do feel quicker/sharper than Bugeyes. There must be some good un-modded ones 99/00 to be had out there (and well worth checking past threads for advice on what to look for/avoid).
Then keep for couple years, and (if smitten)there'll be plenty of good value MY03's about (better still with PPP).
I did 3 yrs in Classic (MY97) - wanted newer replacement, but 1yr old bugeyes just felt less exciting. Of course ended up trashing the budget and got MY03 PPP!! Oh well.

Well what ever u get u'll av fun , classic owners will say classic and bug eyed owners will say theres is best! Personally i prefer the bug eyed but change the lights to the sti type! Remember with the bug eye u'll av warranty left which is well worth having, i had both rear suspension struts replaced after 2 months with no warranty i'd av been gutted! Ur also more likely 2 get a car with lower mileage so take this into consideration!

CLASSIC!!!!!
Bugeye looks **** IMO (and not just the lights, the whole spastic straight lined body shape - looks as bad as the Celica)

b) It looks sh1te compared to a new age with morettes and spoiler
I would NEVER condsider a bug eye - its the "failure" of Subaru, it speaks for itself the fact they pulled production after 2 years & could hardly give them away at the end of it!
Classics rule, they are what the Impreza is all about, you dont buy one to be comfy in, with nice quality plastics, you buy it for the raw driving experience

I would tend agree with C. I believe Subaru tried to appeal to a wider audience with the "comfy" model. But that's not what turned the heads of the enthusiasts.
Interesting that the word "classic" describes the old model ;-)

It's a tricky choice and the same that I'm facing - the price difference between a decent my99/my00 and an early bugeye which might still have some warrantly is now very small. You can get a *new* euro my03 for about two grand more than a good rb5 (some would say no contest but I'm not so sure) I prefer the look of the classic but like the idea of the warranty, better fuel economy and safety and aren't they only 70kg heavier anyway, which is only like carrying a passenger?

"Classic"?? PR stunt by owners of MK1 Impreza's and a good one at that. Can you imagine owners of '93-'00 Ford Escorts declaring that their car was a "Classic" ROFLOL
As was stated earlier you don't need to spend £2,000 to make a MK11 or MK111 Impreza faster, just take off some of the weight.
If it's looks you're worried about then wipe your eye's, all Impreza's are ugly. And anyhow, do you spend your time in the car or looking at it? These are drivers cars, not fashion items!
Live for the now, don't spend your life kneeling in front of the MK1 alter.

I'm afraid IMO the bugeye is an extremely ugly car, fortunately the 03 looks a bit better, so I've bought the last of the classic shape with the intention of skipping the whole bugeye generation and going for the 03 when the time is right. I still think it's a shame they couldn't enhance the classic shape rather than go through the disastrous metamorphis that they chose.

I have to admit I was pretty horrified when I first saw the Bugeye. How could they get it so wrong? At the Motorshow, it looked a little better in the flesh, but then out came the reviews, and it became clear that the new model had gained weight, and slowed up a little.
I bought an MY97, as quite simply I prefered the looks over the new model. Until recently, I have had no intention of getting any other style of Scooby, other than maybe a P1. However, the latest model in the right colours (Black with graphite alloys) does tempt me.
Given a choice now, between a bugeye and another "classic", I'd opt for the classic again. Afterall, many car mags stated that the Impreza was the performance icon of the nineties, and you don't need a "loud" exhaust on classics to get the proper flat four burble...

Bugeye W**k! how can you say that with some of the tosh on the road today, Grand children dictated i got rid of my 6 month old cooper s. What can i buy with same fun factor, (yes i am a grandad, but still a boy racer at heart), "put me in a box when i'm not". What i do need is piece of mind with warranties and servicing. 5 years free of both with mini! three of one with scooby. So please don't call my car w**k, or you will make me think it is time for that BOX!!

JackClark's got a very good point. There is undeniably a certain quirkiness (OK - ugliness) to the Scooby even the Classic (ouch - wait for the knives to be drawn),- but that's what attracted me in the 1st place (even more so the wagon which I've committed to - not gramdchildren, but 4 kids and dog!).
And yes - it's more about perfromance than handling.
But still reckon go Classic as best buck per performance (esp at 27yrs old)and progress to 03 PPP in 2-3yrs

Ref ChrisL's comments on performance,
I've driven a couple of well run in bugeyes and they were simply not as urgent performance wise, and not just in feel, but in MPH at a given point.
Maybe I just had a "good one" - but remember Chris is comparing MY00 with bugeye, not MY99 (or earlier).
same bhp/torque and a fair bit more weight. Never going to be quite on a par performance wise.
There's a school of thought that the MY00 was diluted intentionally by Subaru over earlier models to remove the performance gap to the MY01.
As I've posted above, test data lends some credence to this theory.

Classic , bought mine new in 99 & have still got it , 55k under it's belt & I'd say it runs as sweet now as it did 4 years ago. Then again you know that coz your my bruv & you keep hassling me to sell it to you. If only I could find a replacement , maybe when a decent 2 year old sti8 with PPP comes along I'll be tempted , won't ever do the new car thing again , unless money is not an issue of course.

was gonna say Duck Pond - its a good use of the more "asthetically pleasing" side of the scoob lol
Its just as shame it all goes SO wrong at the front, im not sure they could have made it uglier if they tried, I cant think of a car with a front end worse, it all looks so out of place

TON3 (is that Tonbridge 3?!)
surely the whole point about Scoobynet is a collection of Scooby-afficionados but with DIFFERENT views. If we all adored all Scoobies it would make for a very dull and uninformative forum.
The Scooby (Classic, Bugeye or MkIII) hasn't ever won any design awards, anbd doubt ever will - but I've shelled out hard earned cash for one of the former and one of the latter, so I'm hardly anti and have loved both for different reasons.
If you want unadulterated worship without reason or sense, go to PassionFord site (see last week's thread)!
all IMHO of course
