Rannoch- how long is a piece of string? 3 thou typical, all depends on the piston manufactures recommendations and what you are wanting from the engine.

pavlo- i do not see 600 miles as a proven engine at all!

think the bottom line is i personally wouldn't entrust my engine to a company that has tried and failed so many times at building a high powered engine that the best over the last 2 years has only completed 600 miles!

and, the only high powered(+400bhp) cars out there at the moment seem to be the only ones that haven't had an engine built by LP.

i can't understand how LP seem to be held is such high regard when the best engine that they have produced has only covered 600 miles with no proven power figures!

it may unfold that the new generation of engines that are being produced will make the power and go on to be reliable but as things stand at the moment i wouldn't let LP re-build my lawnmower engine.

IMHO

Bert

Question

Did you get the mis-fire sorted out last Sunday in the mapping session?

What did it turn out to be?

Since Alan has now sold the engine, and any comments I make won't detract from his sale, I'll comment.

Jonny,

As far as I'm concerned, people are entitled to post whatever they like about me, or what I do, as long as it's "accurate".

Since you have an agenda to discredit me, I'm not surprised that the information you post is both inaccurate, and misleading. However, I don't have a problem with you doing this, because it just shows you for what you really are.

You know nothing about my personal engines, or why they failed, or at best, rumour, secondhand information, and supposition.

You know nothing about any of my customers engines, apart from David Wallis's, and JB's, and even that, you get wrong.......

You are correct in saying that I've been working on my personal engine for nearly two years, but even in 2001 my first engine made well over what you call a "high powered" engine. The second engine made far more, but snapped a piston gudgeon pin !!!

However, this is not an engine spec' I offer to customers, because it's not ready for that yet.

Chances are, just like the Project X, and the Reyland cars have blown engines in the pursuit of achieving higher than your average figures for the marque, I may well blow one or two more.

But they will be MY engines, apart from maybe Wallis's, who insists on wanting to run 50bar boost, and a 1000bhp shot of nitrous

Mark.

It's the way to go isn't it John?

Need to build another garage though...

Q

Thinking out loud here...

This is the first *club* i've been a part of and active in where people have big issues with what other people are doing.

In previous clubs i've been in, all members were supportive and genuinely interested in the things other members done to their cars, but the difference from then and now is that the previous clubs' members provided help, support and advice without the need to express jealousy on other members superior cars to theirs.
In the meaning of superior, this is a referral to either better condition of vehicle (concourse) or more powerful and expensive models, but nobody i have ever met until i purchased a Subaru had a bad word to say about anyone else or their cars. Yes, we still slagged each other off, but that is down to personalities and is human nature but their cars were never part of that *banter*. Even those members which weren't part of the *group* were still treated as family because of the common interest in the vehicles they drove.

Just a thought..... and apologies if i've bored the **** off you..

Alan

Talking

Scoobert,

The only thing that puzzles me - given all the talk about 400bhp+ engines - there is only one published result at Elvington this year that anywhere near justifies a 400bhp claim and that is Andy F.

So where are these cars you are talking about performing?

AFAIK there are three cars claiming 440bhp+. Bob didn't perform at TOTB as he hadn't practiced his starts, however I believe that Harvey, an Elvington regular, has only had one run under 12.4s IIRC which is only two tenths faster than Stevens and my car ran with standard engines. Mine with a last minute map just to get up and running for the day!

Why don't you come to Scooby Shoot out and we will see how well you perform!

Rannoch : As you have made reference to my times etc. on this and another thread here are the facts. Also please note I am not a regular at Elvington and from memory my current Wagon has run there three times in the last 12 months.

30.03.03 :

Run 3 - 12.35 1.905 116mph
Run 6 - 12.30 1.899 116mph
Run 9 - 12.28 1.933 116mph (last run).
Top speed 160mph.

Having fitted a new clutch and lighter flywheel along with other mods I wanted to practice some standing starts prior to TOTB.

27.07.03

Run 1 - 13.02 2.286 117mph (Bogged)
Run 2 - 12.80 2.119 118mph (Bogged)
Run 3 - 12.43 2.117 128mph (Wheelspin)
Top speed 176mph (Run 3).

I only had three runs before discovering a sparking plug problem (ceramic insulator broken from electrode tip) which put an end to my day and necessitated cylinder head removal. However, as I was learning a new starting technique which varied substantially from that used in March (because of the lighter flywheel) the July figures are not representative of what will be possible from the current set up.

ooh.. Just noticed this thread..

erm scuse me, please dont discuss my engine without consulting me..

I spoke to a few companys about building my engine, and I selected LP for my own reasons.. I have spoken to a few customers about their engines, and they are very happy.

Scoobert, your right about piston clearances.. does depend on the manufacturer..

Can you quote what the LP supplier says about clearances? and also how they should be measured?

Are my pistons the same as JB's, Yes And No..

Mine have had a couple of mods done to them at my request.. one of which is a coating which is not up for discussion, however my clearances are still 4 thou.

Does my engine sound really slappy, no.
Am I happy with it? Yes
Did I use a Brand New Phase 1 Tensioner? Yes.

Would I recommend Lateral Performance?? I think so.

See you at well lane 6

Cool

Hi David: Don't let them get to you. By now you should have realised there are more talkers and dreamers on here than there are doers. Some of them lead a really sad existence. Anyway these n0b heads know far more about the spec of your car than you do yourself and they also know how fast it was /will be/ should be.
Now you have a 600bhp motor you will also come across a lot of petty jealousy just like Alan G has highlighted.
Stuff the lot of them.
