The claim from Subaru that it now down to 15 odd is garbage.

I think the same brigade have got it in for the RS as have got it in for the M3, ie, people who can't seem to accept that these are excellent cars which in some areas are better than 'scoobs' (most in the case of the M3).

Just to put my 0-100 time opinion into the mix.

I don't have my Scoob anymore, for the last year or so I have been running an Alfa 156 Selespeed Veloce. Its only 155bhp standard but mine runs Autodelta upgrades and pushes out around 175bhp. Standard the "Euro 2, 155bhp" Alfa weighs 1190kg, is pretty slippery through the air and pushes 100mph in 21.5 seconds. I would have thought mine would have come in at a smidgen under 20 seconds with the extra 20bhp.

So here's the reason for the post.

I still attend a lot of Scooby meets and enjoy runs out with scoobyowners. Much has been said about the 0-100mph on the bugeye but I find a bugeye will pull a decent amount of space away from me from a standing start but after 40-50mph I can just about hold station with one which by 100mph would be a about a three second gap. So I would agree with the bugeye being around 17secs to 100mph. Before I get flamed for being a dreamer remember that the bugeye only has around 15bhp per tonne more, has poorer aerodynamics, higher gearing and four wheel drive transmission losses. It makes all its ground with four wheel drive traction and high torque off the line.

The difference is a Classic UK Scoob destroys the Alfa they just pull away from me, constantly putting air between the cars. STi's just make me look silly.

I recently pulled onto a dual carraigeway behind a RS Focus, again after a scooby meet, and he left me for dead. A 01 UK WRX would not have done that.

I think at higher speeds the bugeye is compromised not only with its extra weight but its poor aerodynamics something that the 03 has rectified to a certain degree.

I have had a blast a few months back in Milton Keynes with a Focus RS, around all those rounabouts they have there, and i was very impressed with its cornering (around the rounabouts) and was quite suprised to say the least with its acceleration. I do think that it had a modified exhuast as it sounded rather throaty but i dont think a standard/midly modded new age wrx would have had a chance to be honest, needless to say i blew him away

I think it's actually okay for any owner to be loyal to a particular car maker (like any other brand) and you're entitled to hope that the next car will be great without people saying "Oh, but you're just buying it because you love Fords/Subarus" etc.

You shouldn't criticise other marques though, just because you prefer one particular car. I doubt anyone can find messages from me where I slag off any other car, because if I had the money I'd sure as hell have a whole collection.

I like Fast Fords, but if the Focus RS had been a total dog, I wouldn't have bought one. I drove one BEFORE the reviews came out (namely JC and his "Clarksteer" comments) and didn't notice the problems - but now, everyone talks about it as if it's a huge issue. Fortunately, as people drive the car for themselves they realise the car isn't a nightmare - but it will never stop others using it as a way to attack the "competition".

Why can't people just say something sensible like they don't like the look of it. Fair comment - not everyone likes the Focus. I do but don't like the forthcoming car with the VW (straight line) interior. Others presumably will love it. Likewise, I hated the bug eye Scoobies and the new shape came out too late (and to be honest, I had my heart set on the FRS by then anyway!).

In any case, the car is limited. It's now finished and nearly all are sold - so in 6 months anyone wanting one will HAVE to look second hand or at the competition. Respect the car for what it is and bear in mind, by being non-mainstream it could be a little more outrageous than it would have been as a normal bog-standard car.

the rs focus really needs to make a trip upto the boys at cosworth for the full treatment, id love to see what they could do with the car 4wd and monster bhp ive seen some that have been coverted with the cult YB cosworth engine and the perfomance stats are scarey! theres not much would touch it 0-180mph but its not looking like its going to happen, shame.

You're correct about the lack of money. Each 4WD conversion costs something silly like £50k - so I think Ford will wait until they've got a platform that can take AWD.. Hence the new P1/C1 platform coming out this year (for Mazda, Jag, Volvo and Ford).

There are a couple of conversions done by Focus owners but I'm not sure the old Cosworth engine is THAT good by todays standards.

If you don't to comply with all the new regulations (i.e. you do a mod yourself) you can obviously do much more than a car manufacturer. There are some crazy Focus cars around that waste the RS, but that's true of any make of car.

The cosworth YB engine produces 570-600bhp and is STILL one of the best 2.lt performance engines today no one can argue with that surly.

newer dosent always mean better.

My brother has an Rs focus it is a very nice car as a 20K focus should be!
The best thing about it is the brakes with Brembo 4 pots as standard I peeled myself off the windscreen a few times!
With braking confidence like this when driven hard the Rs is a beast no brake fade for at least 20mins of hardcore driving, my STI was being pushed round counrty twisties untill the straights then I would nail him, but with the longer gearing in the RS it was creeping up with the scoob but only at silly speeds...
overall I still prefer my scoob it was cheap to buy and there are loads of mods avialable and I don't have to void my warranty to get good BHP, but never under eastimate one if being driven properlly.

600hp totally reliable? Only with loads of cash behind it. Spend similar money on an Evo 2.0 and you won't be far off, spend similar money on a Skyline and well!!

The YB is not built today as it can't conform with modern emission laws, it also falls way behind modern NVH standards.

As an out and out race engine for pupose built machines it still the No1 choice I agree. For a modern road car? Things have moved on.

I never tuned my Cossie to that sort of power, but while you can throw loads of money at it, it will never be as nice as the many modern engines available. You also need to uprate everything else that goes with it, or something will go bang very quickly.

It was very rough and my Escort was nowhere near as smooth as the Focus. The handling on a normal, bog-standard, Focus is almost up there with the Escort too - so newer CAN mean better! When the Focus gets 4WD, I doubt it will be the system used on the older Cossies so we should see something that really does replace the legendary Cosworths.

Look at the Escort price; £29995 for 227BHP. Now even very ordinary cars can come with around 200BHP for £20k or LESS. Honda manage 197BHP without a turbo. I think even Cosworth would admit that things have moved on.

Saw a Focus RS at Combe yesterday out on the Scooby session. He came out first and went in first and not one other car came near him...

It looked well balanced and quick IMO, but it dont know who was driving it as it could of been one of the pro drivers, either way it looked nice and thats coming from a BM driver

I agree with you cosworth need to bring out a new upto date engine but the YB still packs a killer punch! i use mine daily in a 4x4 saph running 350bhp its fine as a road car its only when you go over the 400bhp it becomes avery on/off afair.

what can i say about skyline`s apart from there in a playing field all by them selfs 1000bhp!!!!!! id love a go in one of those puppys, the scooby 22b was quit impressive as well been for a ride in one, very nice... love the sound of it too.

Going back last year I think it was, there were a few of the RS owners who met up in Macdonalds at Cribbs Causeway before they went down for a cruise at Weston. I thought one of them was you, if so then the guy you met with the red Escort Cosworth is now the proud owner of that RS Focus that was on track at Coombe.

I know our Subaru group who we hung out with on Saturday was well impressed with Terry's driving, however I haven't heard others say much about it either, wonder why?

The performance of the Focus RS driven by Terry on Saturday spoke for itself...it certainly blew my MY95 WRX, my dads UK Turbo and Snowcrash's STi V5 into oblivion around Combe.

I think he also "had" a couple of EVOs on the last session of the day.

Don't like the look of the interior and the body styling is way too subtle, but it's certainly a superb track car.
