I drove my M8's yesterday to see what they were all about

Loads of torque steer very smooth through the gears but the set up still feels a little SOFT

I dont think i would swap MY scooby for 1 unless it was Tuned a little more and had the suspension lowered and hardened up but it is well worth the £'s for the car

Reminds me of my old Ibiza Cupra R with 212BHP through the front wheels

So much Torque steer

It kicked in @ 4K rev and wanted to go on

Very good little car for the money

The 200+ BHP cups will need to have the Quafe fitted to get the best out of them IMO

Now then Filter/Zorst/Chip/Throttle Bodies/Quafe/Big Brakes= 1 sorted CAR

There is a load of torque steer, but nowt compared to my R5 GT Turbo!

Only had mine 5 weeks, but I am wanting to "mess" with it soon (once it has more miles on) and make it really quick.

Already got a Pipercross Viper for it (picked it up at the right money) and I want an R-Sport ECU too, then probably a zorst & de-cat, which will help things along nicely.

I know a guy that has these exact mods on his Cup and it was RR'd at 198bhp @ fly and runs the 1/4 mile in 14.0secs flat!

I like the cup, think of getting one as a second car, but isn't 170+ BHP a bit much for a front wheel drive car, do you have trouble getting the power down in bends.

No, there aren't too many problems getting the power down; I can only think of two: 1) standing starts - you have to be skilled to go quickly without just wheel-spinning, and 2) exiting roundabouts at about 20mph - if you floor it, you will drift wide, so easy does it. Every other situation is fine, though.

i original bought mine as a cheap alternative to subaru ownership & all in all am very impressed & wouldnt be too sad to keeep it for a while longer, + i can chuck it outside the station carpark all day with no hassle, cant say the same about me old scoobs.
like the sound of the rsport chip effort may have to give them a call, had the cup for ages now(well for me anyway) & i can report that it is deffo a renualt! going back in next week for loud knocking noises on cornering? other than that a little bit rickety but hey all round it is a great little car, & for the grin factor it is well worth it. taking it to the autodrome this friday for an autocar track day thingy, so lets see how she does, get to drive a focus RS too. bags & bags & bags of torque steer, can be a bit scary powering through corners, nice bit of drift etc, NOT looking forward to driving it on the greasy winter roads though!

sorry for the poor pics. camera phone n all

BUMCRACK

My old Ibiza Cupra R had 212BHP front wheel drive and that was fine

There are a couple of Ibiza's going arount with 350BHP through the front wheels(JABBA IHI conversions)

They are very nice 0-60 @ 5.0sec and 1/4 in low 13's

The Cups will be fine with 200+BHP(if you can get it:rolleyes)

Anyone any advice on sorting the cups suspension - want it dropped but don't want to upset Renaults different camber settings the cup has! Coilovers maybe - the Grp N 2.0 16V uses Bilstein and the cup racers use custom struts in laguna housings.

The Eibach springs are the best ones mate...

It won't absolutely slam it, but will lower the cars stance by about an inch, visually it will look much better, it will improve the handling and still maintain a decent ride quality.

p.s. the Cup has different castor to a 172, not camber!

i THOUGHT THE BROCHURE SPEC SAID "3 DEGREES NEGATIVE CAMBER" ? Maybe not though? Will lowering it on Eibackhs affect this? Demon tweeks said the Eibachs will only lower the cup by 10mm?

torque steer what you on about i dont get it at all in my 172!!!!
as for the power figures they cant actually make much more than 166 bhp really as the injectors arnt upto it they are 52bhp each so 80% of that is 166 (or there abouts)

there is one coming soon with TB's on it is just getting the ecu set up now and once finished he will be selling it as a kit

Nope...

The brochure says "Front castor angle increased by 3 degrees" for "Even more informative steering in corners and on the straight" and lowering the car will not affect the castor.

As for the drop you get from Eibach's, it's 20mm at the front and 15mm at the rear according to K-Tec.

Going back to manufacturers conservative times, I understood that testing the cars with a bit more weight means slower times / lower insurance ratings / more sales. ?
Saxo VTS / Pug 106 GTi - same car (just), same engine and power but VTS grp, 14 Pug grp 13!

The gearing is slightly different, but the Pug can still hit 60mph in 2nd and does it in 7.4secs so that aint the reason.

The reason is due to Peugeot testing all their cars with a 1/2 payload.

Well, turns out a lad I know just got an R-Sport ECU for his Cup and will be fitting it tonight, so I am gonna go for a spin in it and see just what difference it makes...

He's had it on the rollers before and will be re-running it with the new ECU, so we'll be able to see the actual imporovements now too.

I'll keep you posted.

Was 169.5bhp @ fly and they're 170bhp standard, the 172 is 172bhp DIN apparently...

Not sure on mileage, but it's not that old so can't be a lot.

Weather wise again not sure.

I'll ask him...

i never wanted a french car either, the cup has a few common teething probs that mine has 2 off, the knocking on left & right turn in especially under throttle which i am led to believe is suspension top mounts, & the knocking from the brake pedal coming from under the boot/rear seat area being a replacement brake valve limiter, i called the guys at R sport & will also be ordering next week. taking the car to bedford tommorow too so that shoould be interesting front wheel drive in the rain with dodgy steering & brakess mmmm

The cups are also prone to broken doggie/gearbox mounts - you will know when you've got a broken one cayse youwill hear a loud clunk when engaging gears - its the mount eating itself away in its housing when the engine is twisted under torque. Just had mine fixed finally after 12000 miles of trying to figure out what it was.

Whats the difference between the Mk1 and Mk2 and when was the change? W / X plate ones are around 8k!
The mk1 is quicker than the mk2 as it weighs less, but slower than the Cup which weighs even less. The mk1 also has more of a kick at 5000rpm as it comes "on cam" and feels really quick when in that power band, but it lacks the low end torque of the newer models and can sometimes feel a bit flat if caught out of the power. The mk1 also has longer gearing which I am not as keen on, although they will do 120mph in 4th!

Driving wise, the steering on the mk1 is not quite as sharp, there's more of a tendancy for understeer if pushing them and the ride is softer. Not that the mk1 is a bad drive, but the mk2 better IMO and the Cup is even sharper than the mk2.

Spec wise there's a few differences between the mk1 & mk2, like you get proper climate control on the mk2, wheras the mk1 is just on/off type aircon. In the mk2 you get (or did until recently) a radio/CD head unit and a 6 CD changer, but in the mk1 it's a radio/cassette head un it & changer. The mk2 has larger (& I think nicer) 16" alloys, to replace the 15" ones on the mk1. The mk1 does not have auto lights (Xenon) & auto wipers, but that's no big deal. You still get the leather & stuff in the mk1 and it's a well specced motor. With the Cup you probably already know that it lacks a lot of the toys, in order to save 89kg on weight, but you can now spec climate on there...

For the money the mk1's are now a good buy and certainly worth a look.

Check out http://www.cliosport.net & http://www.clio172.com for more info...

Always swore I wouldn't go frog
I've had two R5 GT Turbo's, a 106 GTi, a 306 Rallye & now a Clio Cup and the Frogs really know how to make a good hot hatch!

Just drive one and see what you think.
