I thought would be what happened, I didn't think Dave would be diving down the wrong side. From what you said I still say it was the bikers fault and a very very lucky escape. What I thought was a good and cool idea at the weekend was that Tavia was taking bikers round (4 up 3 bikers in full leathers ) for laps and they couldn't believe how fast the car laps and catches bikes. They will be watching out for cars in their mirrors now and it could save their lives.

Valuable training in my opinion because in a bike you don't have an airbag or cage if you get it wrong.

As for the biker Paul, yeah I agree it was his fault but it does make you think when you come off the track ..... If you hit one and kill him would you be happy enough saying to yourself for the rest of your life ....''oh well it was his fault?''.

Not getting all heavy here but hell it was very close. Would make me slow down when overtaking them in the future i think

Not sure what the answer is and of course you never want to hit a biker but if it does happen and it's their fault what can you really do it's not totally down to you at that point onwards is it?

I saw a biker go down heavily on the mini-karussell(?), he was then hit by another (one of his friends I think). Really sad business, I think it was a fatality. I wouldn't go out on a bike at all. The death of Jorund (well known at the ring) really brought home to me just how dodgy it is on a bike.

I dont think there is an answer Paul. I will be going back but I will be very very aware of Bikers. It will stop me from trying to time myself I think, coz it worth loosing a couple of seconds, slowing down and not killing someone than breaking your own record I think.
Anyway enough of that I think. It sounds like you had a great time and thats the main thing. Was the red 911 GT thingy there which has pizzeria blazened on the side of it? that was pretty quick

I agree that slowing down and passing safely is worth spoiling a corner or two I messed up a few letting bikes past and I don't care. In the real world if you record a lap (frowned upon now) and get a clear one then you can check out your time from the tape. I saw a scary sight though, A biker had a stopwatch on his tank which is scary enough but it was mounted on a piece of metal sheet metal sticking up

That Porsche doesn't ring a bell but there was so much to see.

There were a lot of porsches there when i was there. Managed to get past a good few of them which was cool.
played with a new shape M3 and managed to sit on its **** most of the way round which also suprised me.
best place to go and get a big big adrenilin rush. I came out of there and had no desire to drive quickly on the roads. Just chilled me right out.

wouldn't it be safer if they held separate sessions for cars and bikes? I really like the idea of doing the 'ring but so far haven't cos

1) I can't afford to bin a 25k car
2) I don't want to bin myself (worth infintely more than a scooby )

I trust myslef to drive within my own abilities but from all the stuff I have read on SN about the 'ring, it seems like there are plenty of other people out there who take a more reckless approach.

fair comment davy, but i think that if people carry on getting mashed up at the current rate, sooner or later it will be closed down or *sanitised* in some way or other. also, if you ran over your mate who lost it in front of you - well it doesn't really bear thinking about does it?

PC, it is all about driving within your own abilities and not getting involved in an "I can p higher than you contest". When I first went there I was quite happy to drive at a gentle pace and try and learn the circuit, as are several others I can think of. It is a very unforgiving circuit compared to anything in the UK (OK, we'll ignore Quarry at Castle Coombe), the only way is to go gently. I still have my first lap as a gentle one just to scope out the track. I do this with my first lap. I think part ofit is peer pressure, part "well if he can go that quick so can I", and partly I've paid for this lap so I'd better make it count.

I've seen too many accidents there involving people who are only planning on doing 6 laps. For me, I just like driving round the Ring no matter what the speed, as this weekend proved.

You will remember we saw a couple of people who didn't want to get passed by a "slower car" remember the tw@t in the Jaguar XKR? what a numptie but he out-braked himself eventually and then there is the new shape M3 that lost it not wanting to be overtaken by a mark 2 astra and he binned it along the Armco

Hit the nail on the head there Paul ........The really quick guys around there seem to be the locals in their Astra's Mk1 and 2 golfs etc etc. They are so competent and quick but dont care about overtaking rules etc. They are the quickest but also the ones to watch out for.

Great pictures- one of the other things I love about visits there is the machinery you see. Even if you go and just spectate it would still be an awesome day out.

In fact my first ever visit was meant to be a fact finding trip alone. Needless to say I was driving round it by the end of the day as I just couldn't bear to miss out.

When I first went it was just a weekend away, drinking beer and stuff. I was adamant I was just going to do a couple of laps to say I have been and bought the sticker!

After 5 laps, 3 up in the car, I thought it a good idea to book in to the hotel and dump the baggage off. I actaully did 20 laps that weekend in the most hideous conditions possible!

It has now well and truley become an obsession.

I was passed by a local in a VW Bora estate car, didn't try to stop it or pass it again as they were totally bonkers! It had HUGE wheels and tyres (tyres slightly too small for rims)and seemed to have more grip than the scoob. I was faster between bends but that guy had a screw loose, he'll always win (or crash trying).

Still, I'm here to tell the tale so there's a moral there somewhere.
