Following the advice in this thread I took to squating for the first time today. If ever I worked my legs previously it was in machines so this was a whole new experience! I did some research on stance/technique on the net but I have a question:
Should the bar hurt so bloody much or did I have it positioned wrong! I only had 40kg on a 20kg bar (60kg) but it was cutting into my shoulders like you wouldn't believe - how do you support 100+kg on you shoulders without immense pain!?

I get asked this alot, it doesn't bother me at all, yet my training partner who has more muscle than me says it hurts his shoulders. Up to this point i thought it was because i have a pretty muscular back, but must be down to technique too.

The bar can hurt when squatting, yes, even with a thicker Olympic bar. I've always used either a length of pipe lagging, or a towel wrapped round my neck/traps. Pipe lagging is ok, but it will break down after a while. You can get "proper" bar protectors, a sort of glorified pipe lagging with velcro, but i've never got on with them.
In my experience a towel works best because it doesn't slip, doesn't rotate, and can give you the impression of looking bigger in the mirror. And if you're squatting heavy weights, every psychological advantage you can get on your side is worth having.
Most importantly - don't let the shoulder/trap pain today put you off. Find a way round it. Take an old towel and see how you get on. Don't not do squats. They are number one. Unfotunately they're awkward and hurt. Life sucks, huh?
Also want to say - great pics Def, CC and others.

Hehehe, i remember those stories too. Now if there's one exercise beer doesn't mix well with, surely, squats is it! Although how much squatting with weights they got done is anyone's guess!

thx for that rich! again thx for the kind comments lads...quite humbling to be honest
...
...but i do know i'm far from all that and have seen 1st hand proper competition physiques which make me look like a complete beginner.
I think i am gonna go for some definition rather than try and get more size...must get abs lol!!
After heavy squats i usually have very noticeable red marks, almost like devils pinches, across the the top of my shoulder. U just get used to it but as Telboy suggested a towel will help.
Scoobydoo, steriods are not illegal to possess in this country they are illegal to sell without prescription.

Sorry to hear that Madgrip. Also interested to hear what caused that. You're not the only one though, i think it's Grovesy on here who has metal plates in his lower back. Weights can be very dangerous, especially in a moment of madness. I often went nuts, as i've said before, but in the context of doing strip set after strip set, rep after rep, but with lighter and lighter weights and with a spotter who knew what they were doing. When the heavy weights are on the bar though, there's only one mindset to maintain - respect.
Creatine - don't know, never used it.
Protein shakes - i always used Multipower, the staff were always helpful and they did decent bulk discounts, but don't know if that's true now. Worthwhile as a supplement - i added it to my milk and egg whites mixture, but don't rely on it for your protein intake; get that from real food, and treat protein powder as a helping hand.

Ellwood looked flippin huge on BSM last night - just goes to show you though, you don't have to be massive to get on in strength contests..

Don't follow Si, how would the order have made a difference?
I didn't think powerlifting was Ellwood's speciality. Yeah he's strong, but best on the planet? Doubt it.

joking???
He did 410kg deadlift without ever deadlifting before. Also if were saying hes not a good powerlifter
i know fact he squats 7 plates, does reps with 310kg deadlift. Ill find his bench out i to get a 56" chest its not gonna be shy. I bet hes got near a 2000 powerlifting score without even trying! Hes already cleared 1500 with 2 of the recognised lifts.
Si
Weldone CC
thats what i thought too

Kenny,
Just what are you trying to achieve? Do you want to be 16/17 stone with 20" arms?
Are you just trying/wanting to get bigger for the look or is this motivated by the need to be stronger for a particular sport?
If you train hard, eat well, get plenty of rest to recover between sessions then I can't see how you can fail to get big.
A lot of the guys who have mentioned the use of steroids did so because they made the biggest gains and wanted to radically alter their physics (correct me if I'm wrong lads).
If anyone wants to become stronger is everyone with experience of steroid use telling us that you have to use them? or am I correct in thinking that they are a must if you want to go from 12 stone to an 18 stone bodybuilder??
Stefan

Actually no, Stefan. I never used them to build mass, only to maintain mass whilst dieting for contests. I only ever did it reluctantly though; problem is if you don't do them, you'll never win, sad fact of life. Unless it's a tested competition, like oj on here does. Using them day in day out to build size is a whole different ballgame/mindset - not a place i'd like to be. Too much stress, both physically and mentally.
Si - i hear you, but "best on planet" is some claim.
