Should the postmen strike?

I use to be a night duty 600 driver who delivered to the Sub offices, When I first signed my duty I could sign for about 12 hours docket a week and take £325 home a week, when I left 3 years ago for the same night shift I was taking home about £260 a week. At the same time as all of the posties having to take a pay restructuring deal (read paycut) the management spent over £50,000,000 yes fifty million pounds on a computer system to enable benefits to be paid via Post office counters ltd, guess what the Royal mail did not even have the contract with the DSS to be the delivery point for benefits before they spent the money on this system. What do people think happened when the DSS decided not to use the PO at this point? The whole system was scrapped just like that
Then you look to the postmen having to put up with ***** in charge and having their hard work smeared by nothing short of a conspiracy to label anyone who stands up for themselves in this society as selfish when in actual fact it is the ***** who have not got a clue in charge that are selfish as they give the impression to the public that all postel workers are lazy good for nothings which could not be further from the truth in most cases. I fouind that most front line employees where hard workers that commited themselves to several Scheduled atendance's or docket hour's (over time) week in week out. When overtime is mentioned in the PO a docket king usually does more overtime than there scheduled 41.18 duty hours. Don't get me wrong, the PO has got a lot of things wrong, but it is not the fault of the front line employees who are always made to be the scapegoat when the union bully boys want more docket for doing nothing at all
except carving someones duty up maybe ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
There is a lot of things wrong with the PO like its obsession with acrynims and all the talk of personel development when it really means if your face fits
you have got the job.
The solution would be to cut the number of managers recruited from within and cut those already employed if they could not come up with a substantial saving or improvement of the service. I remember one year in my Office which was a Hub that the annual leave book was lost 3/4's of the way into the year, the result every single postman had a full entitlement of holiday time again, RESULT! LOL
Colin do/did you know someone called Jock?

For the source of the problem, look no further than the directors. I am continually flabbergasted at the stream of directors, brought in on an annual income that exceeds most peoples lifetime earnings, who have absolutely no experience or knowledge of the business that they are running, and who make ridiculous and calamatous mistakes before receiving a golden handshake.
Who was the idiot that spent many millions of pounds renaming the Post Office "Consignia"? What incredible stupidity. Any child knows that you don't wreck a well-known brand name.
The latest clot on the scene is Crozier. Ruined the FA, and now there's big trouble at his new place.

Hobo that has nothing to do with the question in hand.....................
Personally I'm starting to think what needs to happen is that that the sword needs to be wielded at managerial level. Until then the pay rise issue is secondary. Sort out the business, then sort out the pay package.
Of course the last to go and first to get more pay rises will be the parasites at the top. Scum.

Come on Chip, you know it's not that, if i thought we had a fighting chance I'd be on the gate with the other lads but sadly the competition with mail now has gone crazy, I mean they have other ways now of getting mail delivered and I'm certainly not gonna sit on my **** for a couple of months and have no job to go back too!!!!!!!

So, after reading through this thread, who from the post office is going to vote NO.
And, if the vote is YES, are you going to walk out with the rest of the sheep?
I for one will vote NO, and not walk out if it is a yes vote, the UCW is a powermad, self serving bunch, who no longer have my support. The management are not much better, but I am not losing any money going out on strike for a business that will go down the drain into the private sector if this strike goes ahead.
chris.

It would be unlikely a system could be developed to sort the post into delivery order(not barcode). The houses delivered to would change every day(not everyone gets mail every day)and an experienced postie could do it far better than any software.Obviously manually sorting the post will take longer, but with less mistakes made would work out quicker in the long run IMO.
As for the mail not coming before 9am/10am whatever, that's not the posties fault(normally),if they have say 6 hours worth of mail to deliver and EVERYONE wants it before they got to work, nothing short of ominprescence or smaller routes will accomplish that.
People getting damaged mail should firstly look at their letterbox.New houses tend to have very narrow slots and older properties have heavily sprung metal draft excluders ones which can rip mail and the actual hole in the door is often considerably smaller than the flap on the front. Also, many properties have dogs-I don't blame them for not wanting to push their fingers through and risk getting bitten.
It's not as simple a job as people make out(often those sat replying at their PC during working hours),there's the responsibility of carrying valuable items and the risks that go with it.A postman/woman is an easy target for crime and they are out there on the streets-easy prey for scumbags.
I have no problem with my postman and think thy deserve a rise.Saying if you don't like it,then leave is pretty short sighted. You lose the experience, get the expense of training someone new and the lost productivity that goes with it(and complaints from customers for the enevitable mistakes). Then when the honeymoon period of a new job has worn off, chances are the new employee will come to the same conclusion as the old one and want better conditions too.

Colin - we've had several problems with our post - its late, incorrectly delivered or he's just downright incapable of putting the letters through the door - leaving them sticking out like a newspaper so anybody could help themselves. I've rung the local delivery office about this and all they say is 'we'll speak to them' yeah right. They may well have been spoken to, but they take **** all notice as its still going on. I've even spoken to the postie myself and asked him to push it all the way through but to no avail.
Its posties and managers like this that tar you all with the same brush. I wouldn't mind if stamps went up in price to cover a decent wage for you guys but it seems like it all goes to the ineffectual imbeciles called managers instead of the guys that do the real legwork.
I think there would be more sympathy for a strike if 1st class arrived the next day as it should and the £750k/day loss black hole was plugged. Its odd that as technology has improved to run the internal workings, the quality has decreased.
Good luck anyway.

Sccob_Babe,
Thanks hun, at the last count 97.2 1st class letters arrive the next day, this is going to be a long hard battle one for which the CWU will not get my support, As for your problems with your mail ring customer service cos that gets both the manager and the postie a kick up the ar4e, and hopefully your problem will be sorted
Cheers

Thats interesting........On who's authority are Postmen delivering spam mail stuff...ie pizza/ indian throw up ????? Is it legal????
But if this is all they earn?? then i think they deserve more...But dont be muppets and strike. just deliver all the post and we wont put stamps on.....this might do the trick
good luck.
Luke...Always got on well with our postmen/lady
