that maybe but i still can't see how a standard 106 can touch a mk 2 golf or a clio 172 never mind a scooby for handling

A standard 106 GTi will out handle a MK2 Golf GTi, and has the same straight line performance levels as the 16v. Why won't you believe this? The 106 is meant to be the best handling hot hatch ever? I don't find this hard to believe since I have a Saxo VTS, which is basically the same car.

172 is meant to be good, although crap seating position...

As much as they are good, thats OTT mate. You need to say "one of the best handling hot hatches", not "the". Otherwise yeah, defo above a Mk2 GTi and equal in straight line speed....

I've driven an F355, and it was sensational, but I have to say, it didn't compare to the tin-foil Pug 106 Git (oops typo) I drove last week.

The sound of an Italian V8 simply failed to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, when compared to the French masterpiece...

"I had a Volvo T5 at the time and that felt as quick, Fiat Coupe turbo I drove was quicker but I realised what the point was when I went round a corner. I had a bit of a go with an S reg turbo (S*** UTD) the other day in my MK2 Golf, from about 30 to 80/90 down a bypass and the braking for the roundabouts and it didnt exactly dissapear, pulled 2 or three car lengths, should we have got to higher speeds I suspect it would have dissapeared easily but my Golf is 120 bhp and weighs less than a ton (when I am not in it), the Scoob is what 208 ? and weighs substantially more and has the 4wd losses to overcome. A standard one just isnt as ballistic as people assume, I still want one because of the handling and the feel of it but for the straight line speed I think it will have to be a Jap spec something or other."

Jacko my pal just bought a mint mark 2 Golf GTi 8 valver (same as yours?) and it is so slow its not funny, 30-100 I could put about 6-8 cars on him. And you say you can keep a scooby to 3 cars 30-90????

I think you'll find the 106 is rated with the best handling wise.

Thankyou Nacro

Scoobydoooo, what would you consider to be the best handling hot hatch? I'd say that the MINI Cooper is a better handler than the 106, especially without the runflat tyres. It has a level of feel that the 106 can not match, but they both have similar grip levels. The 106 is more nimble though. I prefer the Saxo to the 106, but the Saxo is more prone to kicking you in the nuts when it gets very near the limit. Hard.

I think it was on top gear ages ago when they put a 106 gti up against some supercars costing daft money and on certain roads the pug kept up. Was in Clarkson's top 10 handling cars ever.

ok so it must handle well but some of the hyperbole in this thread is way over the top , that was what was making me laugh . i admit it's all about people's opinions and that's what makes this site so good , i just laugh when somebody says stuff like
I've driven an F355, and it was sensational, but I have to say, it didn't compare to the tin-foil Pug 106 Git (oops typo) I drove last week.
i mean come on for christ's sake , i hoe this was tongue in cheek !!!!!

Frazer, I couldnt quite beleive it myself but we were both going for it, I could tell by the stink emanating from the Scoob and the fact we ended up doing nearly 100 mph, as for MK2 GTI's being slow, yes some are painfull, I have had 6 Golf GTI's and this is the quickest being slightly modded, I had a B reg one and to be honest it would have had trouble keeping up with a 1.3 Escort, perhaps this Scoob was having and off day, I am not deluding myself here it happened, I dont make stuff up, if I get wasted I say so. As for 106/VTS handling, yeah they do handle but so does mine being as its on coil overs and decent tyres.

If the 106 and VTS are so good at corners why do I see lines of smashed ones in breakers yards ?

Lift off oversteer and crap drivers-LOL.

My Mk2 Golf 8V features lift off oversteer too. It's also much slower than my Impreza.

Lift off in a VTS will kill you if you are not careful! It has so much grip at the front that when you do overcook it by carrying a stupid, stupid speed into a bend you are in real trouble. In most cases like that if you paniced and lifted without correcting or getting back on the gas I'd say the VTS would EASILY do 720 degree before coming to a stop......assuming it didn't hit anything

The fun part is its got razor sharp reactions so you can let it go seriously sideways and nothing more of a stab of the throttle will flick her back round.....it would be a hoot on a wet airfield day

I've only had one "moment" in my VTS, was going going over a big roundabout in the wet at approx. 50mph in 2nd gear, had someone pull out on me, I HAD to lift or I'd of piled in the side of him, I ended up exiting the roundabout totally sideways, plenty of steering wheel scramble and steady throttle means it didn't spin, and I missed the bloke who pulled out (not by much though!). My mate who was in the car was impressed I caught it, I just wanted to change my pants!
