Dr E - yep a decent small lake actually just over 4000 gallons which we have just about finished. To sit by the edge with a beer or two in hand of an evening is a great chill out method...
BTW where do you use for aquatics stuff? Maidenhead Aquatics in West Horsley? They have a branch near Chichester which we have just found and would recommend. D

I've had a Jewel 96 for about 3 years. I find that I go through spells of trying to get it sorted but then the plants start dying off and interest wains. Haven't really done much with it for ages but I should really. I have a problem with a furry black algae that sticks to rocks and some of the plants. If I can get shot of it I'm sure that would sort alot of the problems but don't know the best way. For plants that root in the ground is it necessary to have a finer substrate than the 4mm sized gravel I have at the moment? All the other plants that don't root seem to do fine.

How do you guys keep your plants going then? I had real plants when I set my tank up, but gradually the fish decided to chew them to pieces, especially the plec, used to suck all the juice out of them and leave transaprent leaves that then just rotted and disintegrated into the water. Have had to put plastic plants in the water for the last 2 years because of this.
The black furry grass/algae stuff can be killed off with a specific chemical as I had this and the chemical worked a treat. Will see if I can find out what it was called.
