...there may well be a legal requirement to make cameras 'visibile' ie. paint them yellow in most cases, but the police seem to be entirely free to take the pi55 !! - there is a Gatso (painted bright yellow of course ) that is perfectly hidden directly behind a large motorway sign on the A2 as you head out of London into Kent - what a f^%&ing joke

hasn't got me yet though but the sheer cheek of it really gets my goat - oh and it's also one of those stupid 50/60 areas, with absolutely no side-roads, pedestrians, low-flying kids etc

I do Reading to Swindon and back 3 or 4 times a week. The cameras are centred around the A34 junction (13) and I think they're just for traffic monitoring whilst they carry out the junction improvement works.

Thumbs up

Having read these warnings about cameras on the M4 (between Swindon and Reading, etc.), and doing the trip on a regular basis I have been looking very carefully and have seen nothing suspicious.....

HOWEVER...

Last Friday, I happened to go into Reading services (west bound) - and thought nothing of the cameras, until such point that I was leaving the services and rejoining the M4.

Now, I might have been wrong, and it might be something else entirely, but as you go round the left hander back onto the M4 there is a large yellow sign on the inside of the bend that is entitled "REGISTRATION PLATE RECOGNITION CAMERAS" - or something like that, and then a whole stack of smaller print.

Obviously, as I didn't know it was there and I was in the Scoob, I was going a little too quick to pay any real attention and read what it said - but perhaps someone who drives past soon could drop into the services and pay more attention on the exit than I did - or even take a photo - as it may well shed some light on this dark and disputed area.....

Reading services, west bound, and read the sign on the exit back onto the M4....

I drive From M4 junction 15 to newbury for work...and also from M4/M5 interchange to cardiff for work.....

This is all late at nite (read: coming back at 3:30 am very fast) and i have had nothing through... touch wood...

fellow Djs also do the same route on different nites...and again have had nothing through.

if they are there i should have about 2000 penalty points and several bans coming my way....but as i said i have heard nothing in the months and months i have been doing it.

having been a passenger at 160 mph (and a driver at illegal but not quite so daft speeds) going past these supposed cameras and havening had nothing through, id say its a fair bet they either arent there, or arent active.

Time will tell.

This is only my understanding and may be completely wrong, but I thought that there were no fixed cameras on the sections of the UK Motorway network where the speed limit is always 70mph.

There are fixed cameras on the gantries in the variable speed section of the M25. There are fixed cameras on sections of the M4 on the "inside M25" stretch, but the speed limit is 60 or 50 (or even 40 as it gets near Chiswick). There may be cameras for the duration of roaworks where the speed limit is temporarily less than 70 (currently SPECS on the M6 Thelwall Viaduct and Gatso on the M6 roadworks where they're building the toll road junction).

There may also be coppers with cameras on the hard shoulder or bridges of 70mph limit sections of Motorways, but I have not seen a fixed camera on a permanently 70mph stretch. I drive around 30K miles per year, and up to 3 years ago was doing in excess of 40K.

Can anyone prove me wrong, please?

On exit from reading services there are number plate recognition cameras that track who's leaving the services - I think the small print says it's to look out for crime in the services, rather than road traffic type stuff.

you need to change lanes between cameras for the system to loose you.
Where did that old wives tale come from?

I doubt very much there is a completely independent computer system running for each lane of the motorway allowing lane changes to loose a car.
