Always amazes me how people can join an almost empty motorway and move straight to lane 2 for no apparent reason, a woman in a Frontera did this to me as I approached (quite quickly) she joined the motorway so I moved to lane two to overtake here as I must have been doing 30 mph more and she moves to lane two (nothing in lane 1) causing me brake heavily, I blow my horn and she gives me the finger !

...or my mate's favourite AVIS-delivery-driver-technique i've found works best, sit so close to his company-car-debadged-BMW-318i-with-a-shirt-hanging-in-the-back **** that his reversing sensors beep, with your offside wheels on the white line (this is even better if said line is one of those bumpy ones), looking at his speedometer over his shoulder. Even the most mileage-hardened trainee-area-manager rep seems to shift over!

Or just whack on full beam and leave it on.

Owain (just driven 700 miles in the last 2 days)

Technically the lanes are

Lane 1
Lane 2 : For cars to overtake lorries (originally)
Lane 3 : Overtaking lane

People seem to be more and more oblivious to other road users when they get into their metal boxes. Others seem positively petrified at changing lanes, so get into one lane and stick to it, regardless.

The ones that really annoy me are those that have kept you behind them for X amount of time, while you're hoping that they will pull over and get out of your way and then, when you finally give up and move into Lane 2, they match your speed to prevent you undertaking.

Clearly, you're not driving a Scooby then - or they're driving a Porky

I don't drive a Scooby, normally I drive a company Peugeot.

Don't get the problem when I'm in my 400bhp twin turbo 300ZX though....strangely...

Phil, that problem with the speeding up thing is so damn irritating when your in a crappy van

I had to endure an old transit that ran on 2 cylinders when it felt like, and a Citreon Berlingo for a year. Both of which could just muster 85mph max after flooring it for 20mins

So you've got it up to speed, then you meet some t-pot hogging the lane, then have to back off. Either they move over eventually, or I decide to undertake - with caution, and after giving them a certain amount of time to realise their errors.

Then they decide to speed up. And in a peice of crap your just left behind them again...with the tailback behind me blameing me now as I have'nt got the oomph to get past.

It amazes me...that in lane 2 with some idiot hogging it at 50 odd, they seem to oblivious that there is a 20ton artic hovering behind 2ft from their bumper, lights on and sometimes a very un-mistakable air-horn.... and they still stay there at 50odd mph!

IMO I think the motorways would flow alot better if there was a minimum speed limit, say 55mph and any vehicles which are not capable of that speed must have the yellow flashing lights etc. It would mean that less vehicle would have to use the middle lane to overtake, and thus less in the third. As, I'm sure everone knows, its the difference in speed that causes the congestion.

Still wouldn't cure the lane hogging though

My 'official' line in many conditions (surrey M25) is:- I drive in lane 1 and pull out to overtake when I catch up with the car ahead then I pull back into lane 1. If there are people on lane 3/4 not using lane 1/2 then that's their problem not mine.
You can make much swifter progress in lane 1 than 4 on many occasions.

What they should do is make lane 1 super smooth nice tarmac and the overtaking lanes considerably worse. People won't want to be bumping along for too long but will obviously put up with it for the quick overtake.
