Thanks for the great suggestions. I looked into rented accomodation in London mid week, but couldnt find anything half decent that didnt cost the earth.

Carl - I am in the IT industry, but have been out of the technical side for around 7 years (Having been asked to move into a Sales related role). As such, Norwich Union isnt an option for me.

The IT industry in Norwich is very small, and I believe the best I could do is work for a software development/Solutions Company in Cambridge. Of course the daily commute would be much better.

There are numerous jobs in Cambridge, but the competition for each position is enormous. I am lucky with the position in London as I am one of only a few people in the world with the specific experience they are looking for. On the other side of the coin, there arent many companies worldwide that look for my specific experience. Bummer.

I guess the best solution for me is to keep looking in Cambridge, and hope a semi-fit comes along for me.

Unless you can agree some sort of telecommuting deal with the place in London (i.e. work from home, perhaps go into the office for meetings one or two days a week)?

Have you actually been offered the London job? If so, you're in a strong bargaining position.

Hi Carl,

Yes the job is mine, but the final remuneration package is not sorted.

I have a wage "scale" to choose from - depending on other benefits chosen. Since my experience is so unique I should ask for as much as I can I guess.

They will allow me to work from home 1 day a week. The rest is 9:00 to 5:30. I can leave slightly early to get a train out of Liverpool street around 6:00pm (I presume an hour to get from Fleet street to Liverpool street is enough at this time??)

I have considered asking to leave of early on Fridays (3:00pm), and this would still leave Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday as LONG days. Still not sure how long I could put up with it though.

The sitting on the train for nearly 2 hours each way is one thing, but it concenrs me the pushing and shoving on the Tubes to make my connections. I have never been through this - and frankly it sounds pretty bad by the few comments that have been posted here.

Edited because my typing is CAK

Scooby96 - not a bad idea on the hotel front. Will be worth pursuing, but I suspect the cost of a good hotel in London will be astronomical.

I know I was surprized when I looked into rented flats. I saw some nice two bedroom flats, but they were 700 pounds per week. PER WEEK for crying out loud! Thats $6000 per month (Canadian). I can live in the biggest mansion in Edmonton for much less than that.

Madbrit, you can walk from Liverpool street to Fleet Street in about 15 mins at a very brisk pace or 25 at a saunter.

£150 per week on Cannon street is very cheap!

I'm looking to move to around Old Street and can't find anything less than £195 per week for a 1 bed shoe box
