As for Jenson Button, he's a shining example of what youngsters who like going fast should be doing - zooming around on a track, not on the public road.
Then they'd be committing an offence. All you'd need is a couple of high profile example cases where the offender cops a long ban and a big fine, and the majority of the rest would jump into line.
I'd even suggest a law banning any deviation from standard - even down to go-faster stripes and alloys, as these can create their own red mist.

matt, i think graduating could be the way forward but whats going to stop them putting a supercharger or turbo on the car and "forgetting" to tell the insurance or what ever???

Gedi - I'd hazard a guess you are 24\25. I'd be interested in your opinion in 6 or 7 years. Seriously, not having a pop, just think it will be different, I know mine is.
Out of interest what was your first car? Mine was a Metro with about 60bhp, at 20 I had a Metro Turbo with something like 97bhp, then an AXGT with 90 something. Quick cars in their day. Mate's of mine had 205GTis, and XR3i's.One friend hads an r5 GT Turbo which was absolute mental and still under 150bhp. Think about all the cars with less than 150bhp new today.
Golf GTi, Focus 2.0, Astra SRi,Ibiza GTi, all more than a handful for *most* young drivers.

How can you restrict someone by age, surely if you get a 25 year old who has just passed there test they will be no different to a 17 year old jumping in the same high performance car.
If you are intent on restricting the BHP of a car you would need to do it based on years experience rather than age.
As for me, well it’s my 26th Birthday today and I have been driving since 1 month after my 17th birthday and have never been involved in any accidents!

I say change the driving test to a structure similar to the motorbike tests.
Off road (as in off the public highway not 4x4) training to learn the basic's of a car with a test on basic car control.
Then out on the roads for a bit of road sense and further training.
Then a test but which only provides you with a license to drive up to a certain cubic capacity or power output. Christ, if they can do it to bikes, why not cars.
Then further tests to upgrade the license to higher capacity cars.

There seems to be a fringe element of 'max power' youths who now own performance cars like subarus etc.
It's a shame to say it but their behaviour behind the wheel does reflect badly to the subaru community as a whole. Saying that, there are older drivers who should know better too.
There seems little we can do about the problem, for example; there is a youth who regularly drives up and down our road in his 'max powered' Renault 5 turbo at speeds of up to 50 mph.
My brother-in-law stopped him last week and told him politely to slow down (our road has many young families with children as young as 5/6 playing out during the daytime. The speed limit has been reduced to 20 mph). Anyway his response was "**** Off or i will put a brick through your window".
What can you do when you are faced with this sort of behaviour? I don't believe the police would be interested in persuing this either.

i agree young drivers do seem to get a battering on here when speeding is involved.im 22 so im young and yes i do open it up to an extent on dual c/w and motorways but to take 4 cars on a blind is pure stupidity as other young drivers have said ive seen some older ones certainly move along.

totally agree wiv the power restriction thing but id be effected lol. i avent got a scooby but i do own a 2.0 16v gsi corsa which is proberly good for 180-190bhp.
i didnt do this conversion to race everything in site. i did it cos i love cars, even tho corsas r common as dog **** lol. i like to know ive got summat different and that it certainly is, i never done it to show other cars up, i just love knowing ive got power under the bonnet just incase i need it for wot ever reason, and to be honest the power only ever gets used on the track or on very deralict roads. im 20 and ave never driven like a **** even just after passing my test. neverbeen done for speeding or anything.
although i may hav done if a close friend of mine hadnt died weeks b4 i past my test which was 3 yrs ago. but we shall never know.
unfortunatly it happens on every car forum posts like this, people dont genralise a certain make. it seems to be anyone wiv a sports exhaust or alloys is a terrible driver.
point of the matter is there is always gonna be incompetent drivers modified or not.
btw my corsa isnt kitted and doesnt ave tractor wheels or a judgement day sounding exhaust lol

The old vs the young. I dont think you can stereotype drivers in this way. Im sure there are some fantastic drivers in their late teens and early twenties, but there are some complete tw@ts who should never been given a licence. Unfortunatly, its always the stupid ones who get noticed and remembered.
I am lucky enough to have a 03 Sti and its a fantastic car. Im 34 and I think now quite sensible driving wise. One thing I do know is that if I had this car at 18 - 21 I would have killed myself in it. Not saying all drivers of that age would, just excepting my limitations. Im sure there are better younger drivers than I am now.
Instead of age limitations for performance vehicles. I think some sort of compulsory training should be given before you could drive that class of vehicle. This could be done in the form of some track day training suggestions.
Just a thought.

but wot we're forgetting is there are cars that are 100bhp and heavy, and then cars that are 100bhp and extremely light.
i take for example the saxo vts, extremely fast car for a 1.6 16v. mainly cos its sooooo light. imo.
just sumthing ive thought of the difference might not be that significant at lower bhp cars but anything say 150bhp plus and weight difference's dont half make a diffenrece.

You could base a system on power-to-weight ratio, and maybe a limited top speed. Keeping a license "clean" for 1 year could "unlock" the door to the next level. "Clean" could be defined as no speeding offence >30mph over limit, 1 speed ticket >10mph & 20mph< and 2 offences <10mph over. Also no wreckless, no DWDC&A, DWUI, causing death by dangerous driving etc..
How many levels and how long to gain unrestricted access would be something for debate.

Tw*t drivers come in all ages and both genders. Unfortunately they normally kill/maim someone else but rarely themselves.
For my 2ps worth as Prime Minister the following would apply;
a) 2 Stage license (just like bikes) regardless of age! With an additional probation of 2yrs till you can buy a performance/modified car.
b) If in breach of license requirements above ban and fine. Second offence as before with minimum jail sentance 12mths.
c) Eye tests every 3yrs till age 50 and then annually.
d) Prosecute any lorry driver in the outside lane of a motorway
e) Track Days to be subsidised by the Government to £75 per day (As we spend less than 7% Motor Tax on the roads this won't cost a bean)
f) Any driver found to be hogging lanes, out-dragging lorry drivers etc etc = license revoked
g) Petrol tax cut by 50%
Anyone want to vote for me at the next election???

i can not actually believe that you think that the young should be restricted horsepower-wise when choosing a car to drive.
agree with earlier comments regards pwoer toweight ratio - i do not think you gentlemen have thought your arguements through and have made flippant and dis-creditable comments that make you look narrow-minded.
i was particuarly amused by Matt w's comment upon focusing more on your mortality in your thirties than twenties - i am a funeral director Matt and 24 - i think i have done more than my fair share of focusing thus far.

Last week as some of you know my car was rear ended by some tw*t not paying attention.Damage aside, the poor girl who was my passenger has a broken bone in the base of her neck. Now it looks like she will be in agony for a long time (assuming the break heals ok).
Statistcally young drivers have more accidents than any other age group. That's fact not fiction.
Regardless of age new drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents within the first two years than at any other time.
As for Weava getting upset with potential finger wagging, wait until it happens to you, then lets see if you have the same tune to play.

Im 20 (nearly 21), i drive a Modded VTS (which will soon put out 180bhp+) ive been driving the VTS since i was bang on 19. I never speed in built up areas. Mainly because i dont want my licence taking away from me, driving is my life as is my car. On the other hand, my mate (who is same age as me) has just been banned. So its swings and roundabouts.
One thing that puzzles me, motorcylce tests state that if im under 21 (which i am) i can pass my test and wait 2 years before i could ride a R1, or wait 3 months for direct access test, and ride one straight away...... i think there should be a rethink there
