It is all about attitude. People that drive like wan*kers in Didcot have something to prove. If you can drive properly and have experience under your belt then you have nothing to prove. You know your depth of experience in various cars/situations so you don't have anything to prove. You also realise that you will always have much to learn and can always improve, like anything in life. Younger drivers tend to have less experience and more to prove. However I say 'tend' as it is about an attitude thing, there will be very competant young drivers with good attitude and imature sh*t older drivers.

My work involves advanced driving (I am not a policeman). Police inspectors who have been with me in a car at speed down back roads say that I am one of the safest drivers at speed they have ever sat with. However I only drive at 30-35 in a 30 limit, stick me in a rally car and I would be hopeless etc etc. We all need to constantly learn.

Attitude... Drive kin quick but in the right places at the right time.

Old gits are just as dangerous in their own way. So dangerous driving isn't about the young. Dangerous young drivers I think are in the minority. The young have quick reaction times and often good coordination. Certain young lads think that is about it when It comes to driving. Then again old basta*ds think driving at 40 everywhere in a 30 in a 50 in a 70 is safe. They need to take their thumbs from up their ar*ses and wake up or get off the road.

On my way to work doing 30 ina 30 zone, some tosser in a pre 97 impreza bob standard dark green was right up my ****, then proceeds to overtake me and another car in a built up residental area.

He was at least in his 30's.

Actually your FTO is quite smart.

As long as its all taken in fun I don't have a problem with banter, but if it gets aggressive it no good because all these cars are on display etc and everyone will meet eventually whether its knockhill or crail - that why I always try to make friends not enemies. Your car would beat my scoob - myself and passenger weigh 44.5 stone between us.

On the subject of the post, I reckon the guy who drove like that will end up 6ft under. Question is, how many others will he take with him?? Its shameful the way cars (not just the scoob) get a bad reputation to many people, through only a couple of idiots.

Reading all your views, I am relieved in many ways to see there's a fair respected level of compassionate road users who use this BBS.

To answer some questions:

I'm very interested in REDKOP'S frst post re: track day participant at Donnington.
You may well have seen the same bloke - as the car in question was indeed a Silver Scoob.......eery that.....I'll come back to this point.

Ok, I reckon about 25.....possibly less. Black hair, spiky, small-about 5"5, maybe taller....jeans, t-shirt.....not the Burberry wearing type..but the small man "chip on shoulder" thing was fundamentally illustrated in his driving behaviour.

What's interesting is, without provocation, many of you perceive a burbberry-cap-wearing, zitty t*o55er owner of a 10 year old Mk1 Scooby (understandably) but.....remarkably, the Subaru in question was an MY03 new look "std" looking WRX.......

.....it was fast, clearly de-catted (?), or a PPP'd WRX, but no other discernable external features aside from the fact that this guys' front wheels were near as dammit black ie: shed loads of brake dust which would indicate:
a) Just finished a track day or.......
b) not washed the car for quite some time.

REDKOP.......... does that tally with your description?

What MY car was the guy you saw running? May not have been the same car but could have been ...........

Hmmmm do like a good thread,
just to add this age thing...well as they say **** happens.
My driving record goes as,
Age 21 (Motorbike) hit head on by 17tonne Army truck, driver was 33yrs old. sufffered broken bones and stuff.
Now fully recoverd i might add.

At the age of 32 hit head on by a 19 year old out night before celebrating his bithday with a couple of mates, fair play to him he hadn't been drinking(luckily for him) came from Stoke didn't know Nottingham at all, thought A453 was a dual carrigeway, 70mph round a blind bend..........yes hello its me, my reactions, not his saved his / mine and his 2 mates lives.

So basically **** can happen to who ever u r at what ever age, but in general they say the younger ones cause more as they don't have as much experience behind the wheel as say someone with 10 yrs in.

BTW, Both accidents were not my fault, both drivers were charged with driving without due care, and i made £'s in compo.

There are a lot of drivers on here with the most enormous chip on their shoulder. It looks as though you don't even bother to read the other posts properly either. Several posts have said that blame for bad or dangerous driving can be spread right across the age range but you still act as though it is only young drivers who get the criticism. Anyone who is prepared to be honest about it all will say that the blame is deserved by the driver who make an idiot of himself regardless of his age, like the man mentioned in the first post.

S Whitehorn, your first post was quite reasonable and you obviously consider yourself to be a bit of a star on the road, but then you spoiled it by your particularly unpleasant and unnecessary ageism in the second post.

Mista Weaver made a very good point about real driving enthusiasts who in my experience tend to take a pride in their driving and use their skill to good and sensible effect instead of trying to show off so that everyone is supposed to see how good they are(not).

I'll just add my ten pence.

I know of someone who was 17 years old when they passed their test.
On his first outing alone, he went down a one way street the wrong way and turned the car over on a bollard/concrete kerb writing his car off.
The amazing fact was that this guy was a member of Mensa and was in the top 100 members.

A driver with insufficient road experience in a high performance car is a deadly weapon.

I don't want to be at risk on the road, as I am sure others as well do not.

If some nutter kill's themselves driving like a maniac then that's ok, but it's more likely they will take someone else
with them which is not on.

I think that insurance companies should refuse to insure an inexperienced driver for a high performance car unless they have at least 2 years driving experience after passing their test.

Glad that's cleared up. Re-reading the thread it's amazing how the blame get's chucked about, without you even mentioning the car or what the driver looks like.

Suppose I'm little guilty there too But you've prooved it's nothing to do with the older scoobs getting cheap enough to be bought by young drivers.

And IMO someone who is 25ish -on the assumption they have been driving for 8 years, should know better (I do - 24). And would probably drive like that till he's a coffin dodger, or in a coffin!

A lot of talk about who is safer. Increasing speed limits as some suggest may only see more people killed on the roads. Have may people registered on the site ever thought about really testing themselves as being a good driver by taking the advanced test???. I guess not!!. I did mine prior to getting my Scoob and have a greater appreciation as to speed and more importantly what is going on around me

I think that most motoring organisation and drivers alike will agree that a raise of the speed limit to say 80mph on the motorway would NOT result in more people being killed on the roads. alot drivers drive around 80mph in any case.

also when the speed limit was introduce, 70 mph was all most cars were capable of and whether that was safely is questionable.

this is not the 1960's and we are not all driving "puddle jumpers"

Didnt mean increasing speed limits just on the motorways, a problem of increasing the limit may only lead to people going the 10% above the limit, figuring that they will safe from being stopped.as you state correctly most people do 80 anyway so we might see people doing closer to 90 if the limit was 80. Sorry for answering the question about the advanced test, it was that the feeling within the Advanced group I attended was that countrywide the numbers of new members was in decline. Would you consider the test if you havent done so already?
