ooooooohhh, where did you get that one?

The scoop looks like it may come off. I'll check it out as soon as it stops raining

Had my carbon bonnet on for about a week now and it looks better than standard (again a black car). Didnt buy it at TSL though - didnt know they were making them. doh.

Anyway, have to agree the that the scoop looks to big for the classic but i guess its different. Fair play for going different.

Ive got carbon bonnet, carbon scoop and carbon 22b vents. Looks good. I did put bonnet pins on mine. Wasnt sure at first but quite like them now.

Have you had over 100 in it? I reckon it will still flap so might be worth thinking about it.

A pen probably weighs more than mine. pmsl

See your point Dan, no amount of carbon fibre will make that thing look nice.

Alot of criticism going on on this thread. Carbon is very difficult to work with and that is an EXCELENT moulding. Cant realy see how you can fault it.
If you dont like the shape of the scoop then fair enough, I do.
Nice one Dan.
(btw, I have nothing to do with the bonnets or TSL)

Carbon may have benefits but unless it is colour coded I don't like it. Looks a bit like you have had a front end and have yet to respray the second hand bonnet.

Just my thoughts though.

Needs to be painted to match the rest of the car, IMHO. I'd do it purely for the weight saving.

I think the carbon bonnet look is hideous. But each to their own.

As to the comments on scoop eficiency, my charge temps dont go over 40 degrees C when driving flat out at 150MPH at the nurburgring with a standard STi5 scoop/intercooler and 25 degrees ambiant, thats no diferent from when its driven hard at a UK circuit at 120MPH, so i would say its still being cooled. Heat soak alone from sitting in traffic jams takes it over 70 degrees charge temp.

Dan, I think your next useful mod will be a packet of toothpicks to straighten out the fins on your intercooler!!! Can't be good for your air flow with half of them flat

these are the same quality (ie bloody thick!!) but come with an OE WRX scoop in carbon instead.

I have a pic but sadly am baffled by these new fangled photo hosties .. will mail to someone clever though if you so wish

Cheers

Hanslow: Yep, I've done that too many times before. It is VERY boring The fins aren't flat, they are just not at precisely the same angle as the other one. A low flying sparrow was sucked up by the scoop on the way back down the A1....

MONEY: Sorry missed the wobble @ 100 question. The CF bonnet wobbles less than the Ali one did. But I notice the wobble more on the cf one. I think its because of the way if reflects the light, and because after fitting it I was always watching and waiting for something nasty to happen.

John F: Interesting what you say about the temperatures. Is there a thread where you discuss this further?
Where were the temp sensors placed?
Would not be better to measure AIR FLOW rather than temp? Granted, the lower the temperature of the air the better, but the MORE air you get to go through the cooler also has a benifit. In my limited physics knowledge I would bet that more air = more air to convect away heat. The temperature in the scoop may be low, but the airflow may actually be going the wrong way if a lower pressure is created at the mouth of the scoop, which would happen if the airflow passes over the top....
I hope that makes some form of twisted sense to someone

Exclamation

I am measuring charge air temperature. That is the temperature of the air after the intercooler entering the inlet plenum. In other words the temperature of the air the engine is using to burn with the fuel. The temperature of the air outside of the intercooler is irrelevant, it’s the air the engine uses to produce power that matters.

On cruise the charge temp is around 17 degrees C when raining, 20 degrees C when dry with the IC sprays off. On a very hot day it can run up around 27 degrees C on cruise with the IC sprays off.

Ahh. But I wasn't questioning that, just the amount of air flowed through the intercooler....

Dan B, thats not important. Its the charge temp that matters. The intercooler is there for one reason, to lower charge temps to acceptable levels after the air is heated by the turbo compresor. Air flow above/below/to the left/right doesnt affect engine performance, only the resultant charge temp does.

Are you saying that the amount of air flowing through the 'cooler doesn't affect the charge temp?

Of course it does. Both the volume of, and the temperature of the air flowing through the i/c are important. Obvious: if you reduce flow to zero or increase air temperature significantly, cooling ability will be severely impacted.

John was saying that - however you get there - it's the resulting charge temp that is important. A decent flow of cool air through the i/c helps you achieve that.

Well, duuuh. (sorry, I still haven't got the hang of injecting electronic sarcasm)

Translating that: There is no change in efficency from 120mph to 150mph on the STI5 setup...... even though there should be 25% more air flowing through the cooler (assuming it is efficient).

What type of temps go into the 'cooler from the turbo?

Anyway. I don't think the scoops were designed to be effective at those speeds. Only very rarely would these speeds be seen on a rally, if at all. Oh, and the WRC cars have front mounts right?
