Got to agree entirely with Astraboy on this one - live and let live. I've a couple of friends who are gay and they're just normal people like the rest of us.

As for Coronation Street - as others have said - turn the TV off - it's absolute ****e anyway. What's the point in watching a story that's never going to end. And of course regardless of all the tosh that the writers come out with about social issues they are only doing it for the ratings.

Regards,

tiggers.

Why show a gay kiss? Why not?

Chip, it'll probably amaze you to know that (big surprise coming up) gay people kiss. Just like straight people. So showing gay people kissing isn't "promoting homosexuality", just refelcting reality.

Do I care whether people are gay or straight? Frankly, I think there's more to worry about in the world. There are gay people I don't like, but their sexuality is nothing to do with it.

Wonder how many lads here think the lesbian story in 'The Bill' is out of order and 'unnecessarily promoting homosexuality'? Most p*rn films have 'girl on girl' action shots, but I've never heard a chap claim that such open displays of homosexuality are 'disgusting and unnatural'.

Chip - what do you think?

What worries me is the excessive use of the phrase 'ramming it down my throat' when discussing sexuality, be it gay or straight.

I'm quite chuffed tbh, my GF's fanny farts used shake the chandalier when he ( nicky platt, aka posing fcukwit ) came on the telly

Obviousley, now he is officially a ferret, her attentions have now focused on Roy Cropper ( stud incognito ), this can't be such a bad thing.

DISCLAIMR:
I don't watch corrie, there's too many ******* in it.

Mark - you're bang on there. I don't know a single straight bloke that would make any complaints about a lesbian storyline in a soap. But if it's two blokes, whoa! that's well out of order.

I think it's better that this topic is being covered in TV, as said by chiark, better than sweeping it under the carpet and thus causing prejudice about homosexuality.

Hi Chip,

I think the basic "disagreement" (can't think of a better word) on the thread is in the use of the word promotion.

To me, two blokes kissing on the screen doesn't mean it's promoting it as the best way of life: it means that that is what occasionally happens in real life, so why not reflect it in something that is supposed to be "real life"? From the sounds of it, it's about a guy who is finding his sexuality and who knows? The stuff portrayed may help someone who is seriously unhappy with the way they are to realise it's not "evil", or twisted, or whatever his circle of friends may think: it's a different way of life that puts them in a minority, but it doesn't make them strange.

I am not a bleeding heart liberalist or PC-gone-mad type, but to me that realisation is something that is positive, not negative. People are homosexual, and whilst it might not be how I live my life, I'm glad for people that they're happy (and gay - sorry, couldn't resist the pun). I do know people in long term relationships and I wouldn't think of saying that their relationship is anything less than a heterosexual relationship. There is the argument of "what about kids", "if that had been the way we were supposed to live" and all that guff, but people are homosexual and that isn't wrong in my eyes.

I haven't seen the media at all - been a bit distracted recently for reasons that'll be clear very soon - but by the sounds of it this is making headlines as the first gay kiss in 43 years of broadcasting the programme. That, to me, is slightly wierd bordering on utterly unbelievable given that the programme has just had a bigamist plot, there's been murders (?) and all sorts of stuff...

People don't suggest that a bigamist plot promotes bigamy, so why think that a gay kiss promotes gayness?

This will always be a very emotive subject because there is a majority of society who are heterosexual. The fact that a minority is different is not a concern as I honestly believe that diversity is fantastic and one of the things that makes humans so successful.

I could probably spout for ages, this is already long enough, but I do think I see your viewpoint and it isn't as extreme as it appears when you read it on a screen. To me, it's the difference between using the phrase "the accepted norm" and "the majority" that is the fundamental shift in perception. The accepted norm implies that anything else is not normal, and that to me leads to hurt, resentment and a lot of confusion for anyone who happens to be labelled with that. The majority/minority perception is perhaps more tolerant or even just a different definition, but it is less compartmentalising than normal/strange. You could argue that this is still labelling people, but IMHO it isn't used in a perjorative fashion.

Cor, this is all very serious! Let's just hope that this post happens to be on a corner for claiming

Cheers,
Nick

Question

I just feel sorry for the actors, i wouldn't like to have to kiss a member of the same sex let alone broadcast it to about 20 million people.

Its official, Homesexuality is going to be banned and anybody caught practising it will be put in prison with lots of other men (and no women), there, sorted.

Some men like ******** other men, fact of life, get over it as you aint going to stop it !, some women like ******** other women, get over it by exposing yourself to this phobia on video every night until you have come to terms with this sordid and degrading act or the tape wears out......

I think if you are daft enough to watch Soap then you deserve to watch Adam Rickett tonguing some other guy, remember when the gay bits appeared in Eastenders all those years ago, the outcry because of a gay kiss, to be honest having seen Gail snogging Martin on Corrie it took me some time to come to terms with it and still have nightmares.

oh come here then Chip. It's been obvious you've been repressing something from the first comment about ramming it...

Damn, missed the corner

BTW, the Bloodhound Gang released a song called "I Wish I was queer so I could get chicks"; definitely worth a listen

Ah, that's better, back to silliness!

Aah, apparently homosexuality was invented in 80's probably by Hallmark to sell more greetings cards ("Hurray, You're Gay!" and the ever popular "You're No Son Of Mine" range).

Funny though, there's a 70 year old chap that lives in my street who's gay. Perhaps you're older than him and from a different generation?

I used to live next to a gay couple. These gents were in their late 60's/mid 70's and were just a nice, harmless old pair of duffers. Had a crap but cvute dog and you'd see them out and about quite a lot.

One of them collapsed and the other guy came to use our phone (this was probably 15 years ago - not everyone had phones then) to call an ambulance. Sadly, revival attempts failed.

Talking to the surviving partner over the next few days and weeks convinced me (if I ever needed convincing) that love knows no boundaries or genders. These two men loved each other, and they'd stayed together for almost 40 years. Every bit as valid as any other relationship I'd say.

I havent a problem with gays, its just that there actions are seen as un-natural, I can see any parents disgust at there little boy/girl being totally confused by gays/lesbians kissing on primetime TV, until they are old enough to understand.

When i say un-natural, i mean against the traditional & biological way we ended up on this planet (boy meets girl=new life)

How many other species turn against nature, ive never seen a gay dog or cat?? anyone know??, or is it a human thing

chiark Darn you to heck I was going to mention that song! Pure class...

DrEvil I thought I was your bitch!

general
Haven't all the soaps (The Bill now sadly included) had a homosexuality story at some point or another?

Eastenders had two men in a relationship that lived together.
Brookside had the famous lesbian kiss.
Emmerdale has also had lesbian characters.
The Bill as already mentioned now has a lesbian story and has already had two men kiss (bit of a shock when you are channel surfing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Archers has a similar story at some point!

It is reflecting society and not promoting anything but the diversity of our modern society.

Truely worring though is the amount I know about the soaps without actually watching them...
