Davegtt QOUTE:

never said being gay is addictive...

correct. in natural terms being a gay isnt always a choice, u just have that feeling, fair enough no probs. but thats coming from people who grew up in a generation where gays wasnt as widely accepted and u didnt see it on telly every day and seeing on the news gay pride with cross dressers prancing around the streets etc etc, in 10 years time kids will have grown up around this environment and will feel differently about it all as u do now. in 20-30 years time being gay will be classed a s natural and we'll have half a population thats gay and half that aint .... see where Im coming from?:

If that aint a HOMOPHOBIC post i dont know what is

I watch corrie, I'm looking forward to the kiss scene

BTW watching corrie doesn't tempt me to marry 2 people or get pregnant and con money outta people, neither does emmerdale tempt me to murder rich or become a lesbian or any other countless silly storylines that the soaps come up with!

mel - I'm guessing your female? so does 2 men together do it for you?

I know 2 women is a turn on to probably neigh on 100% of blokes but the other way round (excuse the pun!) it isnt nearly that high a %

Talking

As a slight hi-Jack and i thought you may appreciate this.

A friend of mine is a promoter of a big club. He owns the penthouse in a luxury development in Birmingham. Phase one was completed with the Penthouse being finished he duly moved in. Come the grand unveiling of Phase two he gets a couple of (female) dancers he knows from the Pepermint Hippo to perform a 'double act' standing (and sitting and bending apparently)in/against his floor to ceiling windows in the penthouse during the opening cereomony with 100+ people in attendance - Priceless and what a guy!

Reading some of this thread is quite funny, other bits are incredibly depressing, given that this 2003.

What amazes me here is the view that by watching or 'promoting' gays, that people will want to be gay. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Being gay isn't a lifesyle decision - its genetic. You don't suddenly decide to become gay because you saw a couple of blokes kissing on the telly.

I have two close friends who are gay. One I have known for more than half my life. I went to school with him, grew up with him etc He has had plenty of 'normal' relationships, but over the last couple of years he has finally admitted to himself that he is gay - it was not an easy thing to do. I have to say that I didn't guess or even suspect that he was. The hardest person to admit this to was himself. Our society is such that he is made to feel ashamed, which is crazy, given that he doesn't have any choice in the matter. He didn't do it because it is suddenly seen as 'trendy'.

Does this change anything between us? No. Do I still go for a pint with him? Of course I do. Does he still having feelings? Of course he does. Does he go through exactly the same crap with relationships that everyone else does? Of course he does. What's changed? Not a lot really. He is a better more relaxed person because he is happy with who he is. He didn't choose it, but he has accepted it.

My other mate has admitted on more than one occassion that he wishes he wasn't gay. Coming from a northern community, attitudes aren't as liberal. He has suffered and lost so called 'friends' because of what he is (it's at times like this, that you actually find out who your true friends are).

I would have to say that neither of my mates are openly gay in the sense that they put on camp accents and hang around certain Brighton night clubs. If you met either of them, I would challenge you to know whether they were gay. This is my point - who cares what they do in their private life? It is no more my business than what I do is his. Does it make them a better or worse person? I don't think so. They are just normal people trying to get on with their lives.

The bigotted and small minded views held by some of the people who have posted here and others who have no doubt read this thread and not replied fill me with despair. There are so many much more serious problems in our society that need to get sorted out and we are still worried about who a person sleeps with!

2003? More like 1903

Chris

Actually the overall view isn't too depressing, though I'll agree that some of the views expressed here are anachronistic in the extreme.

The soaps research the hell out of any potential storyline. Sure, they want to get headlines, but at the same time they don't want to lose viewers (and thus advertising revenue). As virtually all the soaps now either have or have had gay characters, that must mean (assuming the research isn't completely off the boil) that most people don't really mind. More accurately, they don't care, which is what we should be striving for.

Given that the soaps are pretty slow to catch the zeitgeist, the fact that even that bastion of white working class reactionary life, Corrie, is to have a gay character means that it's pretty much OK to be be gay in Britain today. Sad that a lifestyle has to be validated by a soap to be acceptable, but at least the gay characters shown aren't stereotypical tattooed arm-wrestling dykes or campy queens in tight-fitting pink rubber t-shirts.

Chris L - that was a good post IMO and well worth airing. I left the fray as i couldn't be bothered to argue with smallminded people.

289 - There is something in what you are saying but it's easy to forget that people have been beaten to death in the UK for being gay, and it still happens.

Makes it seem a bit more real than a storyline in corrie, don't it?

PC,
Does the fact that I have my own opinion and have aired it make me small minded I ask. I think not.

Scoobydooooo is right what he says. Whether right or wrong , good or bad we are all entitled to have our own views. If you dont think so then so be it. That is your entitlement

IMO someone who entitles a post GAYS.Now even Corrie's at it. and then goes on about how offensive it is to see men kissing on telly is smallminded, yes. I wasn't going to name names but since you mentioned it; that is what i think. You have your opinion - you're welcome to it. I don't say that you can't have that opinion. We know that we disagree - you think i'm some gay loving liberal *rsehole; i think you should get out more. there it is.

no hard feeling on this side [/b]

Chip,

Until now I've only answered in jest, as a topic such a this calls for it.

I could have written my real opinion, which would be that people like you shouldn't be allowed to raise children, as hatred and ignorance tend to be genetical. I'd then say it's "just a wind-up", as that would make it all allright apparently.

Fortunately, I have long decided to not bother anymore.

You are not small minded because you air your opinion. You are however potentially small minded because you aired a small minded opinion. Spot the difference.

As Chris L. said (quite well)... this is 2003. You don't have to "like" gays or whatever, but perhaps showing a bit of respect for say 10% of the population would not go amiss.

And it's probably important to teach that respect to your offspring as well.

What did you think ? 30.000 odd members and none could possibly be gay ? LOL

Save your acid for the issues that are worth getting worked up about.

Oh, and the ancient Greeks (I don't know if they do Scoobynet ) would probably have a laugh with the "gay is a modern thing" ignorance

Have some respect.
