i can't stand smoking and pubs would be much better if smoking wasn't allowed but i wouldn't want to stop people smoking because its their right to do what they want and if things like this start getting banned its only a matter of time until something you enjoy gets banned eg cars that go over 70mph so i would go down the route of pubs and cafes etc having to have(by law)a high standard of ventilation

The government should triple the tax on all tobacco products and reduce the duty on beer and petrol.

They should also make smokers take out private health insurance to cover the cost of their inevitable illness in later life.

Pubs and other public places should have separate rooms so smokers can tab away. Those places that are open plan should be totally smoke-free.

On my way home from London yesterday evening, I got reading my free copy of the Evening Standard. There was a very interesting article written by a restrautuer and smoker. Very interesting.

Not being able to smoke in a bar is like banning cheering at a football match. Is this nanny state going to turn london into a fun free city?
Smokers will be nervy and unhappy. They have accepted bans in many public arenas graciously - but when it comes to a place they are supposed to be able to relax, and where no one is forced to go, it's a different thing altogether. Tensions are running high in New York. At least one life has been ended, when a New York bouncer was stabbed after trying to enforce the ban
The Eurocrats seem to display a complete lack of care for businesses like mine (He is the owner of The Atlantic Bar & Grill, London). It's almost as if they feel the need to validate their existence by tinkering with the small things.

One quote in particular got me thinking.

I'm Sure all non smokers would prefer if no one smoked, but do they really want to accept that the choice in non desirable in society
I dont think the non smokers would bother that much if it was 'non desirable in society'.

Being a smoker, I'm not too happy about the ban. But maybe licensing for bars that do want to allow smoking? I reckon this would be a better approach to take.

So should we also insist that fat barstewards should do the same, or people that drink too much / take drugs etc?

Plus I would have thought the average smoker (whatever that is) probably pays more in duty then they would ever cost the NHS. I think it has been proved that the revenue from smokers isnt passed onto the NHS in full and if it was it would be running in surplus - obviously that would mean less for scameras schools and road repairs.

Red tape is the culprit of the NHS's problems - pen pushers! Apparently the NHS has employed 10's of thousannds of extra administrative staff since Labour came to power!

The tax paid on cigarettes MORE than covers the treatment administered for smoking related illnesses. It's the governments place to allocate this money accordingly, not the smokers, so go have a go at Mr Brown.

I see your point about the fat barstewards though, maybe we should increase tax on Macdonalds and burger kings???

Smoking should be illegal.... Its a dirty disgusting habit, and people who do it are disgusting and dirty!

We should all be armed with fire extinguishers and if we see someone smoking, anywhere, we spray the ****** in the face to put it out.

I should be in Parliament!

The govt. should be encouraging smoking. If you smoke load and loads you're probably gonna keel over before too long, and therefore you won't be hanging around to be a burden on the pension system.

light up everyone!

Thumbs up

Wrong!!!

A few pubs around my way have banned smoking, the first being Weatherspoon's I think.

Reports in the local press say all have experienced the same cycle.

They get an initial drop in trade but over two to three months trade increases to more than it was before the ban. People stay longer in the clean enviroment and have a couple of drinks rather than having one and leaving.

Don't forget smokers are a minority so why should pubs be empty if they are non-smoking. They just atract more non-smokers, from personal experience I can say it's a far better night out without streaming eyes, sore throat and stinking clothes. .

Dear Shug, I'm selfish cos i smoke? I dont't go out and beat people up when I'm drunk! I don't take illegal drugs or rob/attack/mug people to feed my habit. I don't make a fortune out of my habit. i do consider others and do not smoke when around them if they are offended. I always ask. So if i, or if all, people stopped smoking then cancer would cease?? I don't think so. 100 years ago cancer was not even named as they knew nothing about it. The dread that it is can affect anyone at anytime, and that is pretty awful, something in which we all can agree on. I don't think I'm special cos i smoke. When all this nicorettes stuff is advertised i want to buy the one thing they advertise but don't sell....will power! But to call me, or another smoker, selfish is a bit harsh! We all drive? Doesn't that pollute the air and is also a cause of the c? I'm not saying i'm right or that your right, however, in 20 years time there will be something else that we do now that will be found to be bad for us all. When our time has come, it's come. Just don't damn us for what we do!
