I happen to believe mycroft.

He explained his reasoning and it held more water than simply saying it must be bollox because that to55er mycroft said it.

No one else has been able to offer a technical reason based on organic chemistry.

At least it increases the number of outlets for better fuel over 97ron
Seems to go to the heart of it!!

The chances of this fuel giving detectably superior performance or engine protection or environmental friendliness when compared to Optimax seem to me to be minimal. I shall merely be less wound up in future when the gauge is low and there's no Shell Station in sight........

98.6 is a pointless number to consider.

I woulod certainly be looking for the Ultimate over the shell, as they have thought about it more, and not just gone for the highest ron number to convince the masses.

so soon, the UK might be back to where we were 5 years ago, with 98RON SUL, just like the rest of Europe always retained.

Its amazing how we can have our fuel quality dropped below the rest of europe and then its a fantastic thing when we get back to where we should always have been.

Gotta love the marketing.

My car was off the road for 9 weeks. Before it went to Barett's I'd filled it with Optimax. When I got it back it was still pretty much full.
I was advised to take it to power engineering to see if everything was ok i.e not detting. It did not det at any time on the RR at PE and that was with 9 week old Optimax. I also got 301 bhp, not bad for fuel that has lost it's RON

I'm a 'pikey' as you so elegantly put it, and I would understand it just fine.
Are all the people on this board as ignorant as you? I know boss hog is, as his pikey comments can be seen in this very thread.

You won't have to wait too long before someone claims they gained an extra 82.4BHP from their first tank full
I should know because that's what I got from my first tank of Optimax

Same as the one I got

Further to our discussion on 07/10/03, here are some key facts about BP Ultimate:

BP Ultimate is a 97-98 RON Unleaded performance fuel that offers:

More performance for any vehicle that can take unleaded fuel
Up to 7.1% more power.
Up to 5.2% sharper acceleration
AND up to 5.8% better fuel consumption.

Tests on BP Ultimate Unleaded showed that the acceleration increase in equivalent to having the next larger engine size e.g It's like upgrading from a 1.8 to a 2.0.

Improves fuel efficiently by helping you go further on less fuel. By using Ultimate you could get up to 25 more miles from a full tank of fuel.

Also doubles the cleaning power of ordinary fuels, in Unleaded case the higher octane rating ensures that fuel burns better as you drive. It also removes performance robbing deposits from your engine that other fuels can leave behind.

BP Ultimate starts working at once and gets better the more you use it.

The increased octane of BP Ultimate is achieved by more thorough refining, not octane boosters.

BP Ultimate will be available in 100 stores within London as of today, and by mid-October all BP sites across the country will have BP Ultimate.

As of 08/10/03 the BP Ultimate website at http://www.BP will be up and running with information regarding the product.

Thank you again for your call, if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to call the BP Careline on 0800 402402.

Scoobysi

yep I use a full bottle of NF - none of this pansying around with shots and stuff!

£15 - thats a bit steep - if you ermmmmmmmmmmmmm buy in BULK you can get it for about £11ish a bottle - still high I guess

Regarding the degrading of the Optimax - I only go by what I see on the knocklink - although the quality is very variable - maybe from Shell just using boosters in their stuff. If the BP stuff is not as variable then it will give me piece of mind - just need to keep using the boosters (thankfully my sti5 is not my main car and I only drive it about 5000 miles a year)

I'm sure that the quality will be known soon given the amount of people that are starting to map their cars nearer the limit..........

evilkyote,
The website does exist. It's just an internal website. It doesn't show much. Just some pictures of the BP Ultimate pumps in Athens selling the 100 unleaded fuel !!!

Popped in to my local BP on the way home last night and they were fully stickered up with 'ULTIMATE' plastered everywhere, but as yet no price on the pump, or any little stickers saying what RON it is.

I guess I'll have to pop in again tonight and buy some now that it is 'Launch Day'

This came off the BP Ultimate internal website today:

"BP Ultimate Unleaded has a research octane level of 97, which is higher than standard unleaded petrol, which has a research octane level of 95. This, on average, gives increased power in certain vehicles."
