A cut and paste from that BP website:
BP Ultimate Unleaded has a research octane level of 97, which is higher than standard unleaded petrol, which has a research octane level of 95
What a waste of time.....same RON rating as their existing SUL witha shiny new name ??????

From BP Aus-
BP Ultimate™ starts where the other petrols finish. It's a very powerful, high octane (98 RON), unleaded fuel that maximizes engine power and performance. BP Ultimate's unique formula also produces less pollution than any other Australian petrol.
it sounds no better than optimax, and as BP is usualy a penny PL more expensive then I'll still be on the Optimax still.
i think BP are just making sure they don't miss out on a sales oportunity seeing how well shell have done with the idea!

My nan's mates a cleaner at Esso head office, in November they're releasing ESSO DOGS B*LLOCKS SUL
Not only does it give your car a 100BHP NOS style pseudo effect but it cleans your windscreen too
And apparently Texaco will release Hiroshima II although not on sale in the Pacific region....

LOL while I'm at it, Q8 are releasing WMD SUL
We don't know when we'll be able to get our hands on it, but when we do it'll take over 45 mins to fill her up

A complete waste of our time. I'm disappointed because I thought for once the petrochecmical industry were about to do something exciting in the UK for once. Like most UK products, rebranding and spin is the name of the game.
I guess the large majority of the public are interested in price first and foremost. Certainly any friends and family I've asked ain't got a Scooby what the RON value actually means or whether one fuel is better than the other.
I wish people who post ala Mycroft would actually point the uneducated amongst us in the right direction So Adam and Greasemonkey, can you enlighten us as to why the RON value isn't the most important thing?

Well here's what I sent to BP and a reply!!
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:
Why a 97Ron Fuel for the UK when Greece gets 100Ron?? Ultimate appears to be no improvement over your normal SUL and certainly no match for Shell Optimax at 98.6Ron. Will we ever see 100Ron fuel from BP?
And their reply.......
BP Ultimate is a new technology, produced through a very intensive development programme. That programme was the result of asking our customers what they wanted and they told us they wanted more performance with less pollution (sod the polution give us more performance...!!). So that’s what we’ve given them. And those benefits are available to ALL cars, both petrol and diesel. BP Superplus was designed for high performance petrol-engine cars. And at the risk of repeating myself, don’t forget BP Ultimate Diesel. There wasn’t a super grade of diesel. With BP Ultimate, the UK now has its first performance diesel.
It’s due to differences in the markets. In developing BP Ultimate for the UK we have sought to produce a fuel which provides significant benefits for a relatively small additional price. If we sold 100 octane BP Ultimate in the UK it would have to be significantly more expensive, and would make it less accessible to the UK motorist.
It’s not all about octane rating. Many cars do not get any advantage at all from increasing the octane number (how many Japanese import vehicles in Greece compared to the UK???!). We have tested high performance cars that are sensitive to octane and we saw no benefit for 98 versus BP Ultimate petrol in these vehicles and in some cases BP Ultimate provided more performance along with the benefits of less pollution and twice the cleaning power of ordinary fuels.
Thank you for your email, if you have any further queries please don't hesitate to call the BP Careline on 0800 402402.
so????

Ultimate Unleaded fuel is 97 RON, however it is not Superunleaded rebranded. BP Ultimate is a new technology, produced through a very intensive development programme. That programme was the result of asking BP's customers what they wanted and they told BP they wanted more performance with less pollution. So that’s what BP gave them. And those benefits are available to ALL cars, both petrol and diesel. BP Superplus was designed for high performance petrol-engined cars.
In performance car tests BP Ultimate gives equivalent or better performance than Shell Optimax. Also BP Ultimate has twice the cleaning power of conventional fuels and will not only keep your engine clean but will also clean away deposits that are already there.
As has been stated previously, it’s not all about octane rating! BP have tested high performance cars that are sensitive to octane and we saw no benefit for 98 versus BP Ultimate petrol in these vehicles.
Unleaded-Ultimate a few figures for you:
up to 7.1% more power
up to 5.2% Sharper Acceleration
up to 5.8% improved fuel comsumption
also reduces noise up to 52%
BP Ultimate Unleaded prevents 97% of (intake valve) deposits forming.
More Performance, Less Pollution

It's not all about clean your engine and performance. What I want is protection from det. I'll increase performance from mods as long as the fuel combusts well.
I've tried BP SUL and compared to Optimax it stank when it came to reducing detonation AND it's 2p per litre more expensive.
I'll test the new fuel myself and see how much det I get with it.

Hey guys - can you answer this question pls
Considering Shell Optimax is basically SUL + Octane Boosters, does adding a further octane booster like Millers or STP auctally make a difference??
Or am I just wasting money?

The extra Octane booster is to prevent det.
If you run a jap car, then the closer to 100 RON the better. I would say Optimax + booster is best for a jap car.
My UK car runs fine on just Optimax. If it started detting badly, I'd add some booster.

As has been stated previously, it’s not all about octane rating
a) ECU tuners who will laugh in your face
b) People who own imported cars (that run on 100RON in Japan who have to add Octane Booster to their petrol to prevent Det and looked at Ultimate thinking it was going to be special..
What a waisted opportunity
Shame on you BP!

I think what everyone wants to know is, if this new BP Ultimate is safe to put in our scoobs and jap cars,if we dont know if it is safe then still use optimax. Well i'm going to.

ScoobySi Greece has never seen an import! There are only a handful of scoobies out there. One of them posts on this board 'WREXY'. Tax laws dont are really bad on cars over 1.6 and 1.8 l cars so most people cant afford them.
If you tell me, its one big b100dy farse. And since when did BP carry out a customer survey??????
ONE thing which might be different in BP ULTIMATE might be the calrific value of the petrol. Japan measure RON in different ways to us in the UK. Ultimate might just burn differently to Optimax and SUL thus not casung soo much detonation within the engine.
Cheers

I filled up with Ultimate this morning and as soon as the fuel started to get through my knock was very busy. Normally run Optimax and the car was mapped on Esso super. I won't be using the BP stuff again me thinks.

They (BP) introduced a performance Diesel because this country is becoming an Diesel loving nation.............havn't you noticed how virtually every car manufacturer is pushing 'oil burners' down out throats.
How can they say that all of that smoke and soot emitted from the exhaust is less of an health risk than a petrol car(with cats )
Thank god Subaru havn't put a diesel in the Impreza....
If it was down to me i would double the price of DERV except for commercial use and triple the road tax on diesel cars...dirty,smelly...etc etc
