Based in Cheltenham.
rarely travel large distances for work.
Only a small firm
The boss (get the hands dirty type, he does his fair share)
A workshop "manager" lol
Me
The bosses brother.
To be honest, I think If I left he'd be up **** creek.
We had an "apprentice" ..... he lasted three weeks.
no new (young) staff being taken on, company feels stale and not going anywhere.
I seem to be given anything that looks remotely taxing on the brain. (tech drawings etc)
The boss will come and help if he thinks it " too taxing for me on my own".

A note for Chip !
Were those welders subbys ?
As that's a different kettle of fish altogether !
They will be charging that sort of money for tools equipment the whole shooting match!
I, however am "on the books" so get paid the same what ever I do, wherever I go.
edit, spelling

Get yourself coded then! Theres your answer.
These guys are pipeline welders. They are coded and also work to P1 + P9 spec on live VHP gas pipelines.
Most of their work is subject to radiography as well. So no mistakes allowed.
They also chase the work around the country.
Chip.

I think the thread has drifted somewhat off topic here.
I have no desire to get myself coded! It has no use within the company i'm in.
If I were to leave, I would be leaving the construction industy behind completely, before it kills me.
I think a short note to the Boss is in order, ( I can write better than I can communicate orally), plus he doesn't get chance to butt in.
More thoughts on original topic thread..

I wouldnt say we drifted off topic completely. I think that if you dont want to progress then dont moan about what you earn. There are loads of bog standard welders about these days. I never have a problem if I need one. Just a quick call and theres one on the doorstep.
Coded welders are more difficult to get hold of, particularly those on specialist jobs. Therefore this is where the money is.Just a case of supply and demand really.
I was in the same boat as you a few years ago and after years of being in a rut applied to take on new training and move on to a different job within the same industry.
I am now much happier in my work and earn a lot more than I would have if I had stayed put. Try it, you'll not regret it.

what I earn .... In my normal place of work, I am happy with, it's the fact that he thinks he can take me elsewhere and expect to pay me the same !

yea, my fault, not worded very well that!
Spoken whilst in a depressed state last night after arriving home knackered.
After the current spend on the car is done, I'm going to re train in something completely different.
I think I have that seven year itch thing...
This type of work has lost it's spark !
Think I might go work for the post office or something

I've been welding since I was about 14 in one form or another..
It's killing me and I've had enough.
Yes I'm good, I've been told from various garages (when I was running my car repair business) that I was the best welder in Cheltenham
not being big headed there or anything...
but then (I think) I'm good at a lot of other stuff too.
Why do I want to work in that environment, breaking my *****, breathing in all the dodgy fumes, dressed in bloody overalls, sweating my nads off on anything more than a cold day.
I think The boss has just nailed the last nail in his coffin for me to stay there much longer.
I've got to the point where I just want a change of lifestyle as it seems to being going no where...
Perhaps it's because I'm 30 in less than a month.

Dont want to annoy you but:
The two welders we had with us last week were picked up from hotel and brought on site.
Had all prep work, alignment, rigs etc all set up for them.
After each run the mates did all grinding out, brushing etc
Had rods passed to them after each run.
Over two days they completed 4 welds each taking approx 2 hours.
On completion they were driven back to their hotel.
Not bad for £500/day each man.
Chip.

lol @ John.
When the Boss gets a job where a welder is required, it's me that goes.... always ! (no one else capable)
He charges the client £25 pr hr (that includes all equipment)
what do I see at the end of the week
...£8 something pr hr
OK enough.. I'm off to the rolling road day, just to depress myself a little more, as MY car was supposed to be there

End of June i was given 90 days notice of redundancy. The dept. was being restructured, i applied for one of th few jobs on offer, 'software developer', and got it against my expectations.
However, the role was nothing like what was described or i anticipated, so i quit last week .
Got a job contracting within 3 days, my income has now doubled .
Moral of the story - don't be afraid to make that leap of faith, obviously dont do anything too rash, but it sounds like you have marketable skills so make sure u get what ure worth.

Anyway... while I'm here.
to the rest of the helpful scoobynet
I'm just roughing out some thoughts for Monday.
What's missing ?
---------------------------------------------
I feel it necessary to put some thoughts down on Paper as I am somewhat un-happy with working away under the current circumstances.
At my normal place of work I am able to live within my means.
For you to take me away from that “normal” environment and expect me to pay day to day living expenses is simply not fair.
I do not need to borrow money off you or my family when working at home.
I feel unhappy at having to borrow money from you when I am working FOR YOU when away from home.
I believe we should be discussing some sort of reward as an inconvenience payment when working away from home.
My thoughts are, an extra £1 pr hour being a reasonable sum to ask for.
I believe the travel to and from the accommodation should also have some sort of reward attached to it, as you are expecting me to travel outside my normal hours of employment.
Perhaps overtime should be paid for hours outside the normal start / finish times, rather than starting the day on normal time and then moving to overtime after 8hrs are up.
To clarify, I believe this should be in addition to the current travel, accommodation and evening meal benefits you already offer !
I have no “aversion” to working away from home, in fact I quite like the change of scenery, I just feel I’m being used rather than rewarded.
--------------------------------------------------------------

EDITED TO ADD : some extra thoughts to mondays letter.

You should be payed for ALL hours worked, travel time, plus a fully expenced living allowance etc.
Why should you subsedise the Company.
