Which Mountain bike?

Just make sure they're really slack to start with, so you can whip your feet out. A friend of mine has never got on with SPDs but I'd not cycle with anything else. In fact I havene't for the last ten years.

Valid advice on the SPD'd .....
I still have the knee scars from getting used to my Shimano 959's..
Wouldn't be without them now though... Up hill or down dale...
Well reminded on the Insurance..... **** I knew I'd forgotten something...

Start savinf for ypur knee operations..... i wont use them again.. (Not from falling off ..just using them) Find flat pedals much better for free riding etc.

Luke - I've been using them for 10 years, have done thousands (more like tens of thousands, thinking about it) of miles using SPDs, and have *never* had a problem with my knees. Maybe I've just been lucky, I dunno, but I'm far more comfortable with them than with flats.
And anyway, HTF do you bunnyhop otherwise - I know I can't!

Nah, just you're an old geezer Luke. Mind you, I don't freeride - downhill as part of XC is as vertical as I get, and I sure wouldn't want to be ddoing North Shore type stuff with SPDs, cos you want to be able to chuck the bike way BEFORE you hit the ground in that situation!
Iride with them very loose, but it's rare they pop out through normal riding. Have just got some newer ones which have much more float - seeem really weird to start with, don't trust thatv you're not going to fall out every two seconds
