Crashed a saxo into a ditch at 100 mph cartwheeled it nose to end 6 times and walked away without a scratch. The car was completly FLAT when i got out, even the copper couldnt beleive i was alive. So then i bought a scooby cos obviously the saxo was too slow to kill me (I've probably just jinxed myself now. Gulp!)

Can I just point out that you are all still here to tell the tail. Spare a thought for those that didn't make it. I will be this coming January when I raise a toast to one of the best guys I've ever known who sadly lost his life this year doing what he loved best.

To true Gilly, many a good person has been lost in car accidents. Mark Lovell I believe died recently in a Scooby WRC in America so even the strongest cars have their limit.

Did not want this to become a ghoolish tale, just to look at the positive side for a change. If I had hit that bank in my Chevette with no airbags and if I had not had my seat belt on, I don't think I would have survived.

It does seem that modern cars are pretty good. Its amazing that a driver in car as small as a saxo can escape the sort of impacts mentioned.

Finally thanks to all the car designers who are involved with safety, I and many others owe you our lives !!!

LMAO at Marx...

I clipped a car on slippery night on M4 - did 180 then faced down oncoming traffic in middle and outside lane..Lucky the lorry behind me stopped - 5ft before my car...would have been a lot thinner than i am now... Must admit though all the cars airbags came on ok and only had seatbelt bruses. Lucky really. Feels pretty tame really compared to the rest of the Dukes of Hazard and daisey duke stuff the other lads and lasses have had.

I once saw a mass pile up on the M6 near staffordshire, about 150 cars involved in heavy fog about 10(ish) years ago.

Saw 2 amazing sights, a driver of a brand new Lotus Esprit sitting on the crash barrier surveying his untouched car while every car around it was smashed and a couple of people from a triumph spitfire who had hit a flour lorry and were covered head to toe in flour, they looked like a couple of ghosts

I was on the other carrigeway and as we left the fog we could see people entering it at over 60mph knowing that there were stationary cars less than 10 meters into it (and yes we were frantically waving to them).

i was 17 years old and on my way to court to be banned for drink driving yes i was a stupid teenager, sped down a hill at 70mph in my 1300cc car and hit a frosty bit, the car spun out of control tried to keep it straight but it keep pulling me to the side, but the car bumped up a 6" kerb and flew 20 ft in the air then crashed thru a 1and a half foot stone wall into a put front end looked like a mini , still have photos of the car and the newspaper clipping which read 5 nearly killed, three of us in the car and 2 in the bar thats why i agree whith high insurance for young drivers as most are a danger to the roads

Never crashed myself in 14 years of driving however my choice in being a passenger hasnt always been to clever.

Over 11 years ago I was a passenger in a new FIAT UNO TURBO along with 2 friends and the driver. Driver decides to take on a MK2 RS2000 on the deck. We left the road at just over 110Mph and then proceeded to go through 2 concrete bollards, a wire metal fence then we rolled 4 times as we ploughed 200feet into a field. I was in the back.. there was no car left behind me when we came to stop as it had been ripped off just behind the back seat.

When we stopped the roof had kinked all 4 pillars and had it rolled once more we would have been crushed. Talk about luck.. the field we went into had just been freshly ploughed by a farmer so each impact was soft as we compacted the loose soil 2-3 feet into the ground.

No serious injuries, just whiplash and stitches n stuff - only lasting effects for me.. I still pull bits of glass out the back of my head upon occasion

Word of wisdom, if your going to get in a car with someone make sure they are not the dangerous combination that is.

Confidence > Ability

These are the dangerous ones.

Thumbs down

I've never had a shunt but came very close awhile back, out on our usual thursday night run, nice flatish bit of road (its dark by the way) that has a slight right kink just after a junction, mate sat next to me goes "looks like someones at the road end" get within a couple of cars lenghts "OH ****" some git in an astra over shot his turning and is in the middle of the road reversing back to the junction at a crappy angle!! slam on the anchors and aim up the inside of the astra and pray, hit a bit of gravel car steps left then right as getting back on to full tarmac. All I can say is I've never been that quiet before!

Jim

ps don't want to get that close again.

I bit appropriate that my close call was at a corner.

2 crashes I consider the worst what happened to me

1. Sat stationary on the M602 in Manchester, and got rear ended by a guy doing over 70mph whilst on his mobile phone (on that 5th gear the other night when they showed a similar accident, he ended up pretty much like the metro did, luckily for me the traffic in front had started moving again, and I ended up like the escort they showed) Motorway got closed too

2. going over a roundabout in a mondeo, and a guy in a cavalier pulled out without looking, and then slammed his brakes on when he saw me, I hit him, got a face full of air bag, and the column inbetween his front & rear door, ended up behind his handbrake, both very very lucky

When I was a nova boy (ARRH!!), had a Nova GTE, went round a back road at about 80MPH and the car slipped on loose gravel and smashed through a concret post and into a tree.

Had to climb out of the sunroof as the wire around the post had wrapped round the car and locked the doors shut.

When it got towed out by RAC it ripped off the fuel tank, (Me with a ***!, quickly put out!), didnt have no damage to myself but car was fcuked!

Rgds

My story gets repeated by family and friends quite often.

Its xmas eve 1998, me and my brother decide to go looking at cars to pass the time. Found a 306Gti and asked for a test drive, the salesman drove it out on a back road and then we swapped and I started to drive it back. I noticed it was low on fuel but thought nothing about it until a corner when the engine coughed (fuel starvation), back end went and no amount of opposite lock was going to help. We slid down a grass verge, until a tree stump in the hedge sent the car airborne. When we landed it all went quiet apart from the salesman swearing. No one was hurt and luckly we were all wearing our seat belts.

Best bit was when the policeman came to see me (back at the dealers) he asked for my license. You should have seen the salesman face when he asked 'so who is the named driver as this is a provisional license' then added after a long pause 'oops sorry, never seen one of the new licenses before its ok' He also said I'd done a good job on the car as the damage looked impressive

Its after that I decided that I needed I nice family car, not one of those hot hatches. So I saved up bought a new MY99 Turbo

DaveW.

Slid sideways on into a telegraph pole in my mini clubman estate, it was an estate in a state!!! was only 17 and it was my first ever day out on the road, police pulled up wound down the window and asked if we were ok then drove off!! sold it for scrap the next day and cashed in the tax, certainly taught me a lesson about going too fast

Not had any yet in ten years ..close but no cigar yet.. killed lots of furry animals tho rabbits etc the occasional pigeon..sorry but its true.

However my poor old mum had the unfortunate pleasure of ending up on the front page of the local rag.. car pulled out of side junction just as she passed it, hit her rear 3/4 and launched her up onto her roof where she proceeded down the road at 50 to 60 mph ...
lots of sparks apparently , brand new suzuki swift totally arsed ..

she said 'it didnt react to the wheel..' no it was on its bloody roof

have to find the clip from the paper
