news at last, but alas of the bad kind the general manager of subaru uk is away and someone on his behals has written to basically say that the damage caused by driving it the short distance home is not covered under warranty tharefore they wont touch it!!!!!!!!!!!!! " damage cannot be considered as a manafacturing defect and therefore, we are unable to provide assistance in this matter" Eh when somthing goes wrong damage is usually the result???????

Hi Matty is the car on a W Reg ? is built in 2000 ? If it is then it may well be a warrantly claim, my old scoob shot fifth gear and it was found to be the split pin which holds the retaining washer on that was at fault, apparrently (and this is known at subaru) a certain japanese guy on a certain shift in the fuji plant in japan wasn't putting the split pins in on a whole batch of scoobs in the MY00 model, thus no split pin meant that the nut was loose and all my gears giggled about until I could only get 1st 2nd and fourth !. They fixed mine under warranty.

Matty you said at the begining 1st gear was stripped
were the teeth stripped clean off the driven shaft .If this is the case we have seen this before on 1st and second and unfortunatly Subaru proved with metal analysis and tests that it was down to driver abuse ,I think in one case I know of it cost more in experts than the eventual repair costs .

the damage caused by driving it the short distance home is not covered under warranty
If the CEL light comes on or if you hear some horrible noise from the engine/gearbox you are supposed to stop in your tracks & phone for recovery. This limits any damage to just what broke at the time & would be covered by warranty.
A bit like if your radiator blew & you were recovered home, your in the clear. But if you tried to nurse it home & you blew a head gasket which in turn contaminated your oil with water which in turn cooked your bearings .... You get my drift. They wont cover you for the afters.
How did they know you drove it home?Bit late I know but best not admit to anything.Hope you get it sorted, sorry for you m8.

I had a problem with clutch judder on my old MY00 and took it to my local dealer. It was terrible on a cold morning and the car really felt like it was falling to pieces sometimes. Dealer had it twice, and reckoned it was fine. I left it with them for a week, and they still reckoned "they all do that sir" I phoned IM and kicked off. They immediately autherised a new clutch bell housing and flywheel.
I understand where all the hassle occurs. Dealer strips the car (in good faith) phone IM and they refuse a warranty claim. They then have the problem of a stripped down car in there garage. You the customer are pissed off, and it isn't the dealers fault really.
The dealer must then fix and charge the customer. It's a really awkward position for the dealers to be in.
Phone IM and talk to them nicely. I'm sure they'll be happy to fix it for you, if your firm and don't take no for answer!!
Good luck, Phill

Had the same problem on my MY01 wagon, and dealer explanation as blabber re the clutch ie. they all do that, it's only when it's cold etc.
Dealer said that to leave it till the next service to see if it got worse. It did. When I took it back they said that it could just be the mileage and they way I drive. All sorted out when I reminded them that it had juddered from 16K.
After insisting that it was a problem the dealer had it replaced under warranty, flywheel as well. I know it's not in the same league as the gearbox but shows that the dealers can be a bit reluctant to do warranty work.
Anybody know why they would replace the flywheel?

'cos when the clutch goes west it takes the flywheel with it.
The clutch plate rubs on the friction face of the flywheel,so they replace the two faces that rub at the same time.
Depending on mileage the thrust bearing is normaly done at the same time while its all in bits on the floor.
