BIFF
Best name for a dog and you can then claim to have a dog named after a unix component that was named after a dog :-)
biff was the part of the unix mail system that alerted users to new mail. For quite some time people tried to work out what it stood for as most unix commands are shortened forms of a word, such as ls for list, or an acronym, such as pine which is from "pine is not elm." It was only when someone visited the apartment of the chap who wrote biff that they discovered what it stood for. The girl in the ground floor apartment had a dog, called biff, who barked when the postman came.
So, I'd go with biff and would train him to bark at the postman.

hedgehog, you have reminded me why we laughed at a mate of mine who proclaimed when drunk "isn't grep a wonderful command!"
tell me you don;t own a T-shirt with:-
"cd /pub
more beer"
on!

Hey, grep, it's a great command! Good name for a dog as well. What's funny about it?
Hmmm, perhaps you are right, I need to get out more :-)
Actually unix is interesting because most of the commands were written by dope heads and so have a story, it's an OS with a social history. I wonder will we find the same thing about the Windows security patches? Which one are you applying this week?
Naw, I'm sticking with biff, grep doesn't suit a boxer.
