Having owned many jap performance cars including 5 imprezas 
I always had a soft spot for these.
Likewise I bought one, a UK 3000GT. Was excellent, really loved it but for some reason you couldnt feel the raw power I felt with other cars such as the imprezas, evos and skylines. As others have mentioned theres very little feeling but one thing for sure on mine anyway was that it handles like a dream.
Got a bit scared with the maintenance side of things as parts wise they are sky rocket high in price hence the reason they depreciated so badly.

I had a GTO before my WRX.....lovely car but ate cash. If you find a well looked after example and don`t ever do any modding to it and spend stacks on maintaining it, it might last a few years. If you find a well looked after example and don`t ever intend to do any modding to it until you have a very small stutter under acceleration which turns out to be the head gasket, which then shows lots of bore wash up, so you drop the sump and the whole bottom end looks on its last legs and the list goes on and on........so I ended up with a monster specced GTO that was as reliable as the post office. Every little bang or knock cost £££s but having said that I put a smile on my face every time I drove it.
The big difference between GTO and 300gt was turbos, JDM have 9bs and GTs have 13gs. Handling wise the standard car wasn`t too bad for a big cruiser and could certainly hold its own, especially 5 speed boxed cars as 3rd gear could do 30 - 120 mph ( so I`d been told )
They do cost a fortune in parts and Mitsi main dealers can be a pain in the **** when trying to order stuff. My mate owns Evil Empire Performance and he gets all parts from Japan/States nice and cheap.
Main problem now is finding a decent car, there are some real dogs floating around out there now. They`ve become so cheap that people buy them,just manage to insure them but can`t afford to maintain them.
Just my 2p worth.

a good example is very hard to come by. Mine was pretty mint to be honest and i got it cheap as the guy who i bought it off emmigrated to Australia. However even with 45k on clock with full dealer history i started getting signs of synchros giving up. Do miss it but as you have also said they eat cash. In my personal experience my car never did rinse me but I got signs it was soon to do so.

ive totally run away from these cars now to be honest. Enjoy my Q7 and am actually considering the red car with a prancing horse at the moment
Its a pitty that a car that had so much potential was such a flop in the 3000GT

GTO is good and can be great and very fast..
Iv recently taken an interest in the GTO and read ur extensive threads and also dug info on it.
Simply put- autos or non-turbos will be crap.
My friend has a manual TT. great car. has 19" rims and high spec tyres and he says the handling is pretty damn good but the wheel and tyre upgrade really made the GTO's abilities come out (not sure about the long term drivetrain reliability as a cost tho..)
Now,
In recently going out to look at purchasing a GTO i went in a GTO (1993 manual TT) that had up spec wheels, tyres, brakes, and clutch. It handled like you wouldnt believe.

LOve My GTO TT
I have have my 1st GTo TT over a year now.
My Last car was a Porsche 944 that was not very amazing so I fitted a V8 modified Rover engine, even worse that the Standard engine besides the sound and torque.
The GTO is a beast. I have raced GSXR 1100 in straight lines and they had to pull over.
My mate has a modified Nissan GTIR that I get passed at 75mph and then he is gone on the rear view mirror.
85mph in second
135mph in third
Expect about 185mph in 5th(if not more)
I have a GPZ1100 1985 model I have not bothered driven since getting the GTO.
Handling is better than a mini,but only in the dry.
I have 265 tyres on the rear and is not nice to drive round the bends in Wales wear I am for the last 7 years, but the dry , ooo in the dry it sticks like glue and is so responsive. I will fit 235 on the rear when they need replacing.
The car is a ***ing fast dream car that I picked up for £1500 and spent another £1000 changing turbo's, tappets and a self tune up.
Does about 27mp/g.
I am over the moon for the fun and shear smile on my face when the Twin Turbo's kick in. It is a bit like riding a 2 stroke motor cross bike when the power band kick's in except you have control.
Exept when all 4 wheels spin!

Modified GTiR... to 100mph, they are very quick, even if they only have basic upgrades fitted. You pass it after 75mph, doubt it.

Perhaps a tad over exagerrated. But Have had 2 GTO tt myself, and they are quicker than you think. The top end speed is immense and I can't recall the exact figures but your were pulling well,well in excess of 100mph in 3rd and pulling strong, and still have another 2 gears to go. I fitted a dawes to mine at the time and filter and it really flew. Never dynoed but had to be a realistic 350/350. which is pretty good going when you consider what i takes to get a classic to this level.
A popular upgrade is twin TD04's which can make 400/400
Huge cars, tiny cabin space. They do handle but don't inspire you to throw one about. There are not a light, nippy agile cars like a scoobs.
They will do some impressive 0-60 times, but again due to tall gears have to really plant it in 1st a bit like M3's. These cars are great motorway munchers and comparable to M3's, M5's once you get up to silly silly speeds.
Changing rear spark plugs on the V6 is a nightmare as you have to take off the inlet manifold to get at them, so invariable people don't bother or cut corners and change the front only.
Great cars, but are now cars dare I say it that attract petrol heads on a budget and think .Wow. over 300horses out the box 3ltr V6, low slung well hard sports Jap nutter fun all for sub 5K. Who then proceed to buy it on a maxed out budget and have no money to keep it on the road. So most of the limited examples out there are now a little tired, and not at there best.
If your on a budget, the scoob is a much better proposition IMO, it will cost you less in the first place, plenty to choose from, plenty of parts, knowledge and relatively cheap and easy to fix. Consequently there are plenty of very good, reliable enthusiast owned scoobs for little money.
Pays ya money - takes ya choice.

I had a drive in one of these about 4 years ago now when I was looking to buy the STI V1, The GTO was savage in a straight line, and the one I drove needed a gearbox rebuild, that was the TT version. Would have been a very expensive car to run even by Scooby standards, and insurance was mental again even by STI standards so I bought the scooby,
Would make a fantastic weekend car though if a good one can be found

yes obviously i would get alot but only if i cant sell,, but if sum1 wants it its 1500 quick sale easy diy repair,, bumper, wing and headlight ,wheel should on the road for 500 max

My Gtir will hit 87 in 7.7secs, so either his Gtir isn't very modified (mine has under 300bhp) or your GTO is running well into the 11s and major horsepower say 500+ as they weigh a tonne.
