Typically, I went to the south side which was the runway
in use, along with thousands of others, only for BAA to divert all
three Concordes onto the North runway.....

Less than thrilled, although great to see them, even from so far away

Right. I work for BAA in airside ops. BAA do not move Concorde around or any other aircraft. In Concordes case, BA speak to ATC and ask if it can land out of alternation. If ATC are in agreement, it happens. As for today, Concorde was always scheduled to take-off and land on 27R/09L ie the NORTHERN runway. To clarify, the northern runway is the one nearest the A4, not the one by Hatton Cross. The northern runway is where the grandstand was erected, for public viewing and media. It was not switched at the last minute from the Southern runway.
Hope this clears that up.

To back up what Flightman said, we were listening to ATC tower and approach. The northern runway (27R) was being used for arrivals when we got there. Shortly afterwards, this runway was used for departures and 27L was used for arrivals. When the 3 Concordes came into circuit, all other landings stopped and they landed on 27R in front of the grandstand.
There was a free BA bus taking people from Hatton Cross to the end of the northern runway, for spectating. A bloke was walking around the station bus pick up area shouting this out.
Not BA's fault but very confusing if you turned up when they were using 27L.
On the radio...
ATC "286 have you missed the taxiway? Would you like to go around?"
Speedbird 02 (Concorde) "I heard you mention a 'go around' Tower, were you talking to me?"
ATC "Nice try Speedbird 02! 286 are you taxying around again?"

Thats a good one about the "go around" Pete. If it had been me I think I might have have started the overshoot, smacked on 60 degrees of bank in the climb and then acknowledged the "request" for the "go around"

Rumour around LHR was that Bannister was going to try a go-around. Pity he didnt, i would have loved to have seen that.
Can see why he didntn do it though. Poor old Joan Collins would have keeled over!
