Hmm, don't think I'd recommend removing it permanently.
ABS isn't great in rough or slippery surfaces, but you can still safely steer the car even after standing on the brakes.
Of course, no ABS does give more feedback through the pedal and once you find the biting point, it can be used very effectively.
I would be cautious for emergencies, when you may panic and just stand on the brakes. I wouldn't like to hear the outcome if someone smashed a car up after removing the ABS fuse.
You can't just pop it back in when the Insurance assessor arrives are you're stuck in Hospital in traction

IIRC don't you stop quicker in the snow with wheels locked as the snow builds up in front of the wheel like mini drifts and in effect helps reduce momentum ?
Also snyone done the prodrive live multi surface/skid pan drive, the ABS does nothing on the balsite (ice effect) tiles, really quite frightening.

My quattro's got a switch to switch off the abs, it also disconnects automatically when you operate the diff locks. In the manual it tells you to switch it off in the snow, so at least they're honest
