Hi All, spoke with Mazda today and they really ain't got a clue why this should be being banded about.
Perhaps a message should go back along the lines of
quote, Some car sales men have been known to tell story's !, unquote.
The sales men l have spoken to that went on the dealer course have absolutely raved about the RX-8 .
So perhaps we have a disgruntailed sales man that was not chosen to go on the course ?
O yes the person from head office l spoke to RAN the course at Silverstone !

oh & u might wana tell yer friend if he likes his job to zip it

There is absolutely no way that it will need rebuilding at 60,000kms - it just wouldn't be financially viable for Mazda to do this.
This guy should not be working as a Mazda salesperson if he is making such claims, and I'm sure that Mazda UK/Japan would like to chat to him.
As Mike has said first gen. RX-7's have often been found to be running well past the 200,000kms mark on the original engine.
Why would the technology and all the testing that Mazda has done over more than 30years put them in a backward direction at this point in time with the rotary?
Come on - reality check please, this guy should lose his job for statements like that - especially if he is putting people off purchasing the car

Funny - I went into my Mazda dealer to sign the paperwork for my RX-8 yesterday and re-asked about the engine rotor tips. He took me to the workshop manager who showed me the internal intranet for the RX-8 where the engineers start their training.
It actually states on the intranet that Mazda expect the rotor tips to last for at least 150,000 miles under good maintenance.
So there ya go.

Laurence, the normal (read NON-TURBO) rotary engines can do this sort of milage without problem.
It appears that only the later series 6 onwards RX-7 had problems wil rotor tips and milage. The highest milage that I know about was 85k miles.
Dan
PS. They are cheaper to rebuild than a scoob engine.

What did he order to get to 28k???
I went for metallic, leather, satnav and a few accessories. That lot was just over 23k. He must have got every accessory in the book!!

I had a quick off the cuff drive of an RX8 yesterday. Just happened to be passing Arundale Mazda in Coulby Newham, Middlesbrough (also a Mitsubishi dealer!!!!).
Had a look at the car in showroom and salesman said someone was due to come for a test drive in 20 minutes so if I wanted a quick drive I could go straight away.
Have to say I was very impressed both by the car and the salesman constantly telling me to push it harder - to which, of course, I duly obliged. Acceleration was superb joiningg a dual carriageway - not quite as fast as my MY03/PPP but very smooth. Definitely not the torquiest of engines but still a lot of fun.
Grip was superb (dry!!!) If anyone knows the A19/A174 roundabout - it flew round it like it was on rails - very impressive.
This was in a 230.
Interior excellent as is Bose hi-fi. And also really practical - the boot isn't that much smaller than an Impreza (no spare wheel though).
Tempted - very tempted....

Sold my STi7 12 days ago and picked up my RX-8 the same day.
I loved the scoob and was sorry to see it go but I must say I havent missed it one bit as the RX-8 is just FANTASTIC.
All IMHO of course

I'm doing a lot of long drives these days. Still not massive mileage but keep trooping up to Leeds and back for a project. The CTR fantastic as it is was just a bit much for this. It gets too much 'Max Power' attention and is a bit on the noisy/hard side for this kind of use.
So I decided to change whilst it was still worth something. After much deliberation and test-driving the Mazda won my order.

i have driven both the r32 and the rx8 i think the the rx8 is the niced car but i feel it is not that quick it just does not feel as quick as o-60 in 6.4 sec i have driven 2 different car does any one else feel this way the r32 feels a lot quicker.

I extensively test-drove the R32 and the RX-8 almost back-to-back when I was looking.
You're right that the RX-8 doesn't feel as quick but that is deceptive. In real terms it is just as fast as the R32 in all but the top speed (146 versus 154). The difference is that the R32 has a torquey delivery whereas the RX-8 is incredibly smooth - you don't realise just how fast you're going unless you watch the speedometer.
IMHO the other problem with the Golf was that when sat at the traffic lights it doesn't carry presence. It's just another Golf to most people whereas cars like the 350z and RX-8 have street presence, whether you think they are pretty, aggressive, striking or downright ugly they at least make a statement.
But that is just IMO and the Golf is definitely a good car. Anyone buying one is getting a great drive.

How do you guys who have got an RX8 feel about the engine rebuild at 60,000 miles at a cost of 6000 pounds. A close friend is a mazda salesman and many people are cancelling orders and loosing there deposit due to this very reason.
Actually it was the RX-7 that used to occasionally need a rebuild at around 60-70k. This cost about 3k not 6k like you suggest. There are also a large number of RX-7's that did not ever need this and successfully went though 100k with no problem. As with any car it's all down to how you look after it.
With the RX-8 it's a different matter. You still need to look after it but that's the case for any high-revving engine isn't it? On the positive side though Mazda are quoting a lifespan of 150,000 miles plus on the Renesis. That means a well looked after one should see 200k.
Oh yeah - and a rebuild will see change from 3k on an RX-8 as well. You were obviously multiplying this by the number of rotors in the engine.
I hope this helps
Laurence
