In standard form they aint sparkling by today standards. The drivetrain/gearbox got in the way and 220bhp a Focus RS would have it for breakfast IMHO. Its the tuning potential they have which makes them a legend and the fact they were the start of a new breed of affordable higher performance cars. Trouble is like any car the more you tune the more unreliability you introduce.

C you actually know of 7 people who have blown up Esc Cos's - hmmm find that very hard to believe, especially when I know far more many owners of them than you do!

As for ugly and a re-shelled Sapph LMAO Ford had a superb engine in the YBG that was used in the Sierra Sapph, so they decided to try and put the engine, drivetrain and suspension of the 4 x 4 Sapph into a modified & strengthened Escort shell. This was found to be impossible, so a new chassis & body was built, specifically for the Escort RS Cosworth. Using 400 new parts it was more than twice as stiff and strong as a standard Escort chassis. An Esc Cos only shares 50% of its’ body panels with a standard Escort.
I have been in Scoobs and tbh there's no difference in comfort.
Handling.... I would have the Esc Cos any day to a Scoob, it being far more positive. Scoobs I found far too light and negative.
All Esc Cos’s were built at Karmann in Germany, therefore a rust issue is negligible.

I didnt imply Escort alone - I also included the Saff...

I forgot then the immaculate shelled 93K reg with 16,000 mile had no rust underneath at all when we got it on the ramps, this was I quote at the time "A mint car I would sell a kidney to buy"...

As for smokey & rattley my mate who was following me must have imagined it

Remember - this is just my opinion, but every cossie I have been out in has never 'done it' for me & I've even been in a 550bhp mountune built Saff which was just plain horrible! it was so gutless untill 4000 rpm & then the thing took off but was virtually uncontrollable...

So much for being in a legend - If we wernt moving I could have mistaken it for a Metro!

Can't fecking stand the things if im honest, & its not just a typical 'jap driving ford hatred' I have had real experience of being driven & driving lots of them @ IMO they are simply crap...

If people are prepared to continue paying these prices for so called old "classics" whatever they are, then they can't be over priced....

For the reasons outlined above, unlike some other cars, Ford Cosworths will never have that kind of appeal for me though ... I still see them as just tarted up Ford's ..... and I'm not alone here ..

When I want performance, and I mean REAL performance, I swing the old leg over a throbbing, powerful ......

That stat is interesting ..... that's about the same as the total of MG Montego Turbos made over the whole production run 85-91-ish which prior to the Ford COSWORTHs, when the MG first appeared was the fastest accelerating ordinary 4-door production saloon IIRC.

I thought there were far more COSWORTHs than that.

I think cosworth fiddled (doubled the power) with the s4 engine which audi put into the rs4.

Having owned an ESC-COS for 2 years I can honestly say they are a truely outstanding car. OK out of the box they are not electrifying but in their day they were just that

As for kids of today not knowing what they are I beg to differ I had numerous kids around my way immediately ask if they could see the engine of my "Cossie"

I had standard suspension, standard wheels, standard brakes and I agree the Scoob would eat it for breakfast in this form but then my Cossie was 10 years old!

Mine ran greens, 3 bar and 22psi of boost, full catted exhaust and put out 296hp at John Nobles and in a straight line it would smack my STi8 in the mouth and laugh, thats a fact! And once up around 90/100mph I would say my Cossie would leave the Scoob like it was standing still

Escort Cossie truely great car period. And I love my Scoob as well for mainly the same reasons plus its warranty

Im sure Cosworth was a company in its own right when it did the Escort/Sierras. It was sold in the 90's - Audi bought the Cosworth technoligies part and Ford bought the badge and the part that had developed the cars.

Anyway - I would rather a Cossie than a Scoob like many other people and lack of Cossies is why prices are so high. If there was as many Cossies as Scoobs things would be different.

Some pretty controversial comments, i suspect that the usual Gran Turismo rules apply, ie not driven it but can comment as only a world authority could.

As Red has already said, limited numbers, made in germany, with some of the fastest modified examples of any road car around.
Please don't be confusing this with your average mainstream model.

The cosworth fettled engine is the rs4, which used the normal s4 engine as the basis. The s4 'just' has the normal audi engine. Sorry if I phrased it badly.

R1916V lmfao.... classic. So the Escos handles well.... because it beat a Calibra turbo and Rover 220 turbo, two of the most renowned for crap-handling 'sporty' cars of the last 15 years then? I think that the general arena of comparison would be other rally reps of the era, namely the Delta Integrale, Impreza turbo, Audi Quattro, Celica GT4, and in standard trim, from memory, I believe the Escos was considered to be toward the bottom of that pile. However, as with all things this is a. a matter of personal preference, and b. something that can easily be changed - you have only to try an Impreza with Prodrive geometry settings to see this.

My Scoob was a good car which was fast and totally capable but if it was sitting next to my old escort and I had the choice of either, I would pick the same as almost every other member of the public.

COSSIE EVERY TIME.

Plus the scoob blew up after 38k miles.

I spoke to the latest owner of my old cossie (who drives like a ***) and he's on the same engine and g'box at 75k miles and its still running the GGR 370bhp conv.

Oh how I miss that car.....
