misty,
They maybe heavier than a classic but they don't suffer from 4wd transmission losses, they are also more areodynamic than a classic. A 180bhp standard RS has an official top speed of 146mph which is already quicker than a classic scoob. Jon aka Tavia RS had his 230bhp Octavia GPS tracked at 161mph.
Jabba motorsport will do the 230bhp conversion for £475, Jon had his done at 9000miles, it's now done over 120000miles including 10000miles of track days without any problems apart from the VW/Audi coil pack problem and problems caused by fair wear and tear on a car with so many road and track miles
Other than off the line and then only if you are prepared to dump the clutch while on boost in the scoob or in very tight (1st and second gear) twisties it's going to be very close. On A roads and motorways at 70mph+ I would expect a 220-230bhp RS to be quicker than a UK scoob.
And just to add,
No I don't have an RS Octavia.

Traffic cops on bbc1 a t5 was pursuing an octavia rs and it left him behind. The voice over tried to mock the skoda but the footage spoke for itself!!!!!
I saw that-made me laugh when they said the Skodas rally heritage helped it escape across the bumpy downhill wasteland
Personally,I like the RS.I think it's a pretty good looking car for the money.
I've seen Derbyshire traffic police in them as well-an Omega and RS were playing cat&mouse on the A38/M1/A61.

I may be talking out of place but for 15K i could go to the bristol import centre and get the latest WRX STI(300bhp)at present paying 15,995 for import? I know the RS has its converts from standard scoobies but anyone had 300+ scoob and moved to Skoda RS?
Dont think you'll find many?
But yes the RS is nice and as available on most Company car schemes so no doubt more will be hitting the after market area within 3yrs...depreciation will make it a viable buy along the line.

You can get VRs a yr or so old with less than 10K miles on them and the manufacturer warranty with 2 yrs to run for about 11K. Add the £400 you'll need for a jabba remap and you have a car that will keep up with a similar age WRX for considerably less cash.

THIS IS GREAT! - Some people are staying open minded and others are totally against the idea of the Skoda being competitive
LET ME say it again !
1. I am talking about a good value alternative to the Impreza.
2. I've owned Impreza Turbos and 4 other Subarus
3. I was totally skeptical about the 1.8T Octavia as you are
4. It can be RELIABLY remapped beyond 220bhp by Jabba sport
5. The 4x4 version is AS QUICK IN THE MIDRANGE as a 4x4 Impreza
with similar power (220bhp).
6. If you are a huge Subaru fan, but cannot justify spending a lot
to get a newer one (Like me) then have a look with an open mind.
7. Floyd - I'm also in roundabout city. Can't remember if you have
PPP (we've met once) but if its standard, I've no problem in
doing a friendly straight-line test at not-stupid speeds ?
I repeat 'straight-line' as its still riding on the stilts that
Skoda supply it with from new !
8. The outlay: £10000 for a dealer supplied 2001 4x4 car.
£1500(max) for lower suspension, better front brakes, remap.
Stay open minded and don't knock it till you've tried it.
Funny as that is what I was telling people when I bought my first Subaru in 1990...

Fabia vRS?
Jabba do a 184bhp to 196bhp with 300lbft to 320lbft conversion for around £400.
Should be ample mid range for a car based on the VW Polo
Not too sure on the looks though.

I went in jons rs at the ring in sept, was very very impressed by the car and also how much knowledge of the ring he has. The car was quick and handled very well, great car for a 1.6
He had clutch problems unfortunatly but stil got it home.
Considering how many track miles he has done, very reliable. Made me not be badge snob!

Since I had my scoob nicked I've been thinking about a vRS but still want 4x4.
The tavia 4x4 isn't as nice on the inside as a vRS but having been out in two of the hotter vRS's floating around at the mo getting traction does seem to be a bit of a prob.

From Tavia (on the road again )
About the reliablity, my car is 25 months old and it has done 123,000 miles of which 10,380 miles are track miles. In that time it has had one fan motor go that only affected the temp on track (apart from 12 miles at 150mph on an autobarn ) & 1 blown clutch at the ring due to having to hold the car on the clutch (due to a closure) to avoid damage to anything more serious (turbo, brakes etc).
In both cases I was able to drive the car home and although my car has been modified for the last 112,000 miles both repairs were covered under my standard Skoda warranty

Good to hear what the probs were. To be honest, I'd like to see how a scoob would hold up to the same level of 'abuse' and no, not saying you abuse it John, think people know what I mean.

I'd like to know how long a clutch or cooling fan would last on a scoob I drove Jons car at Nurburgring and it drove like a brand new car It was unbelievable just how tight everything was and how good it still sounds My car is worse than that at half the miles
I want one

You are all right, don't buy a Skoda they are ****e, always breaking down, expensive to run and insure, they have a boy racer image, suffer from blown engines and gearboxes, the dealers hate you and just want to make money out of you and if you even thing about modifying it, they'll void your warranty. As for venturing on track, don't do it! They send spies to all the trackdays who will note down your VIN number.
Oh no! Wait a minute, thats the Scoob!

I get easily confused
Still amazed that myself and some of the other owners get actively encouraged to mod our cars and our dealers keep asking when we've got trackdays arranged and can they come along to see what the RS is like on track
Hux, fair fight now Race you to 185?(on my private racetrack), ask Gossy

Flat 4x4, yes we've met (Kents Hill) and I know you were considering the Skoda back then. If you read my post again you'll see that I would consider one myself (but my wife wouldn't and I'm not that poor yet ). I would test my car against yours but I prefer driving on the 'ring and it wouldn't be fair anyway for the reasons you already mentioned.
As for Tavia (John) well, I've only met him twice and each time he was b1tch'in about how this or that wasn't working. Don't get me wrong, nice enough chap with some good lines at the 'ring so respect due, but from my snapshot of his car told me that he has problems. I didn't know what mileage he had done so I'll take that into consideration. I suppose I really should go onto a Skoda BBS to find out bit more but I suspect that the BBS would be quite new and the owners still naive and proud, unlike bitter and jaded SN

"The wife wouldn't" - oh dear ! Mine prefers it to my Impreza because its "quieter and people aren't always having a go while I'm driving"
When you mention people being niaive (sp) it was actually me coming from Scoobydom (and a LOT of 4x4 road cars) that was lacking in knowledge.
Hand on heart, the potential IMHO for the 4x4 version of the Octavia with the 1.8T engine is better than the non-STi Imprezas.
And by the way, my Impreza lost its engine after 60,000m of FSSH and mobil 5/50 motorsport oil, so 130k with a couple of component failures in Jon's RS makes an interesting comparison for me !

Floyd, no offence taken
You just caught me at a bad time when mechanical failure occured. Yep, I was really p1ssed off! They were the first failures I'd had and they would have to happen at the Ring, s0ds law
Ho hum, I'm still deluded I suppose.

Oh no, they're still happy. Is there nothing that'll crush the skoda 'halo'?
This is just another symptom of the moral decay that's gnawing at the heart of scoobynet? Perhaps we should call this skodynet?
F
PS I must try harder to wind them up

Having chased Jon around mid-Wales in the summer, I can only say that I was well impressed with his car (although I knew that already ).
Accelerating out of 30 limits, I was having to back off ever-so-slightly (decatted 93 WRX), but once out onto the open road his RS was more than capable.
The only drawback was the lack of 4WD on the slower, tighter corners where the 'tavia lacked a bit of traction. That said, I was struggling to keep up because of overheating brakes!!
All in all, I think the Skoda is an excellent car - TaviaRS's car has taken some abuse, but still goes like stink. Personally, I also like the Q-car factor that goes with the Skoda badge!!
PS; we had a couple of double-takes from people at the side of the road - Jon's car also sounds awesome, and spits flames too!! Not bad for a Skoda......
