Big smiles from me also - WRX 03, 3500 miles (bucket seats not sports ones - Belgium import!)

Just reported a whinning gearbox in 5th at around 70 MPH under very slight load, and a 2nd gear that sounds like a bag of nails under engine braking. Engineer came out with me for a good test drive. He could hear something, but not as good as me! He said he would find it difficult to fault find this one until it gets worse. So ... I'm driving it until it gets worse, and then gets fixed!

(Lanes) I see you had a 5th gear issue - sound like mine?

Oh I love my '03 to bits - done 11,000 miles since March and she just keeps geting faster.
Had to have the Prodrive backbox fitted as there wasn't any "rumble", as well as an Sti strut brace. May well go for some Eibach / Prodrive springs (whenever they come out), to improve low speed turn in and high speed stability. Obviously want the PPP - but funds tight at the moment, so that will have to wait!

So far have "Monstered" a few fairly fast cars: Audi TT, Audi S3, Clio 172 Sport, BMW 330i, Civic Type R, Integra Type R, Porsche Boxster (both 2.5 and 2.7), Nissan 200SX etc. Even as standard - it isn't as slow as people suggested originally .....

Biggest 2 gripes:
Stereo crap - but have now easily sorted that with a new head unit and speakers.
Geometry out from new - which killed the front tyres - but having had it re-set with lots of negative camber - the car is amazing ......

My girlfriend thinks it's the nicest car to drive, of all of those I've had - which is some compliment after an Elise, a Civic Type R, and an M3.

Madmark
wouldn't a new stereo, brace, back-box etc add almost up to PPP?
Compare to my MY97 the stereo's fab and all my spare ££ went to the PPP which I enjoy far more than any CD, esp if crank window down a notch.

Had MY03 WRX for 3 months now and still smiling madly. My first Scooby.
No problems to report, although getting in to reverse was difficult for the first few weeks, but that got better once it had run in.
Only slight disappointment is the seats being uncomfortable.

MadMark - LOL! I managed to get PPP at 1K service without wife noticing!

Nick - now you mention it, amazed nobody else has raised this: the achilles heel of WRX03 IMHO!

i'm comming up to the 6.5k mark on my MY03 WRX in WR Blue and i can report that:

having previously owned lots of "sports" cars such as: 2 Integrale's, M3 Evo, Porsche Boxster, TVR Griffith 500, Clio cup, Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo, 225 Audi TT, many older hot hatches, Gti's , etc. I can honestly say that the WRX is the most enjoyable, realistic performance car of the lot, it never feels like it's going to break down, keeps me warm & dry in the winter/cool in the summer, gets me not only round a race track but also gets me their and back too without the need for a trailer, and best of all.....is cheaper than most other machinery (some of which dont come with a 3 yr warranty either).

In all I am mightly impressed, i cud have got a new evo, an sti or a skyline, but i am really , really pleased i bought this, totally honest, does-exactly-wot-is-says-on-the-tin motor.

one last point...of all the cars i've owned (including the integrales) none have such a following as the subaru's. It's nice to read that there are other people enjoying their new scoobs too. One small tip though, go and get ur car fully decatted asap...u can always stick your original exhaust in the garage inase u ever need to have to put it back on (god forbid), it's the best £500 -odd u'll ever spend and lowers the turbo spool up and gives u about another 40 bhp.

Had mine for 6 months and 13k miles, PPP at 10k, made a good car fantastic. No problems at all but a slight creak.
The original stereo is crap so I replaced it with a single din MP3 unit with the help of people here on good old scoobynet.
Don't regret buying it for a second.

Done 11000 miles in my 03WRX wagon, had PPP put on at 1k service. My first scoob and absolutely love it!!!

Only had fairly minor problems - couple of rattles, squealing brakes - and one more frustrating one with hesitation under throttle which was finally traced to fault codes in the ECU.

It is to me the ultimate combination of performance and practicality. Could do with a little less body roll, more supportive seats and better brakes - oh and wheel arch bulges (or just a bit more visual aggression) - but on balance a great, great car!!!!!!!!!

Kentscooby2 - well at least she won't notice - because I already have the Prodrive Exhaust!

Guess what the Christmas Bonus (that she doesn't know about) may well get spent on ....

Is PPP really that good?
It is on my 02 WRX. The car's so much more driveable - less gearchanges to make the same progress, but if you want to really fly, just drop that extra cog or two and away you go! It pulls much harder in every gear, and looses that breathlessness above 6K.

The chassis seems to make the most of the extra power too; seems like it's coming into its own with the extra grunt.

It's one of the few mods too, that retains a fair portion of its value come trade in time.

Cheers

stevecrisp, gearbox problem only became noticeable above 3000 revs - sounded like you were trying to change into 5th without the clutch......(nice!). No whining once it was in though...

Had my WRX 03 PPP for three weeks - 1800 miles, can't believe what a fantastic car this is, upgraded speakers but still not happy with stereo, put Sti 8 wheels and tyres on which has improved the handling greatly when really pushing it (also looks much better).
I can't believe that such a performance 2 litre car can be as reliable as everyone says - can't get enough of it and am always popping out to the shop for an excuse to drive it.

"Brilliant" think that sums it up!

Vast improvement with sound even with standard speakers, plan to upgrade them soon. See christmas over then PPP is planned. Gould thing for me is wife loves driving as much as me. Smile factor is second to none.

(wrxmania) Regarding the stereo. You need to buy a single DIN 'bucket' from your local Scooby dealer. Please note, that their are two versions, both the same price around £13.

The one they will offer you is a black plastic module which incorporates a cubby-hole to put things in - don't get this one!

The other one, is colour coded to match the silver facia on the dash and has a door (well flap) which opens when you press it. The cubby-hole on this one looks like you can put a few CDs in. I'm sure you've guessed, I got the silver one!

wrxmania - re PPP : "absolutely"! but see many previous threads on subject.

mattstant - wife genuinely disinterested in cars, so the 'slight' exhaust change post 1K service went unnoticed! As for noise - has said "it's slightly louder than pervious Subaru". Tee hee!!

WRX 03 - mine used nearly 2 litres up to it's first service - but since then it hasn't used a drip! Must just have bedded in!

Red face

yikes - had better check mine!

Have fallen into modern car laziness of rarely checking fluids/ tyre pressures etc. Used to do it at least weekly with my 1st car, which at least could crank start when battery flat = Morris Minor!

Do you know if they used a different oil or not? A&J Whites in Blackburn did my 1k service, but have since lost their frachise, its therefore gonna have to go to Robinsons in Rochdale.

had my 03 wrx since May and think its awesome, I returned from Germany yesterday after driving a van over there for a week, I was blown away with my scooby's performance and sound (prodrive BB) , grinning like a kid when flooring it ! Only gripe is wipers and stereo.

Darrensn,

Have to agree with you , wipers are pretty crap . Have changed mine for Bosch day after I got the car ( from new ) and they are Smearing already !

Stereo doesn't bother me as have Prodrive exhaust and LOVE the sound of it !

Question

Darrensn / StevoWRX
Is the backbox your only mod ?
I would like a bit more burble but don't have cash for full PPP. (and don't want to affect warranty !) Does the backbox make a big difference on its own ?
I know the PPP has decat middle section as well.....
New backbox could just fit the bill ! Was it the Subaru WR Sport back box? It's about £350 isn't it ?
Could be on list for Santa !!!!

It's the best car I've ever owned

e02923 - Yes , only mod . It's a Prodrive BB from accessories brochure . Got it done at 1000 mile service . BEST thing I could have done for the money £350 . Recommend it 100% .. Totally changes the sound of the car .. OK .. I know its not a full decat or Magnex , but it is a hell of an improvement .. Sounds like a scoob should ! Everybody comments .." I heard you arrive when I was inside the house " .

Last comment : DO IT - YOU WON'T REGRET IT M8 !
