lol! This thread conjures up images of those "ard nuts" who strut about with their chest puffed out, their T shirt sleeves rolled up and their arms held away from their sides as if they have huge muscle bulk when in reality they are puny weaklings.
Always make an effort to "brush" past them on the pavement enough to set them off course

Yet again
people still dont seem to grasp the difference between a body builder and a strength athelete.
There is very very little in common

lol @ spoons and ajm oh-so-clever comments ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
. I thing cos u obviously have NO interest in powerlifting/bodybuilding, u miscontrue peoples motivations for participation.
lmao
, excellent....oh by the way did I tell you I'm a bodybuilder???? lol
.
This is a thread involving weight-training, so the subject WILL be mentioned believe it or not! Yes I'm proud of what I've achieved but certainly not to the extent of being arrogant.
If someone talks about their very fast 1/4 mile time in a thread involving santa pod, are they 'wrong' for doing so
?
Yeh u get people like that but they're not necessarily all gym-goers and even the ones that do workout are quite often new-comers who'll stick at it for all of 3 months.
I've found that bodybuilders/powerlifters who have been training for quite a while and have reached a decent level, are some of the most laid back easy going people I've met
.
If you really purposely do what you suggested in that last paragraph, then you're a ****, plain and simple ****, no better than the type people you're slagging off
, clever.
Si, cheers for the vote of confidence
, lol @ 'Daddy'!! Since I put those pics up (remember?) I've come on a fair bit
...from what I'm told a comp could be a possibility for me sometime next year, I hope u go into one too, the motivation knowing that people will expect big things will be excellent
.
![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Of course that is from those you know or like to talk about themselves.

Yeah good luck
i think it'd be more nerve racking on a stage rather then doing the 100meters with 100kg in each hand ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
How do you actually train for symetry?? Must be pain staking work to do that. Also the BB diet is alot harder and strict.
Got a friend who's done quite a few comps and might be able to give you some good advice if you want his email address??
trouble with my show is, its a 200mile trip down. Not much food or sleep might hamper my performance but loads people have said i should just go for it and with my currents lifts expect i'll do every well too for a novice show![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

lol....well its all go here!
as for size....dont confuse levers with strength....and dont confuse isolated examples with the norm.
look at nature, how many small animals are stronger than big ones? and if anyone mentions ants carrting 10 times body weight then they have missed the point....a 1 stone animal lifting 2 stone is not as strong as a 20 stone animal lifting 5 stone.
the same applies to humans. get a load of 4ft dwarfs and a load of 7 ft basketball players......think you'll find the little guys not so strong. imagine that in 1000 years time men evolve to be 8ft tall...you think they would be weaker than current 6ft men?
last point:

not very scientific but i bet si will love a pic of hulk hogan on a strength post![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
and in case anyone wants to point out that hulk is not as strong as powerlifters thats because havin the natural ability to be strong is rare (like any sporting skill that is genetic) and being 7ft is also rare.....7ft and strong is almost statisticly unheard of. BUT...if the avarage height of men was 7ft you think the ones gifted for strength would not develope stronger than 6ft men?

Tiggs and Alex, the lever comments are correct.
You have to remember the effect is reversed.
Take a 10 foot pole with a pivot 1 foot from one end.
And try and lift 1 KG attached to the long end.
now cut the long end in half and try again. The ratios change and its easier to lift the weight.
limbs are the same, except the pivot point is , basically, right at the end.
Here's an easier example - one you could try at home![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
try an arm curl at your desk, using your other arm as the weight, pushing down. Assuming equal strength in your arms, it should be impossible to do the curl.
Now move the "weight" hand to the middle of your forearm and try again - you should be able to lift it.
Shorter lever = easier to lift the same weight.
So it follows that shorter limbs = less effort to lift the same weight than long limbs. You're also moving it over a shorter distance.
Of course its much more complicated, as many pivots are involved in any lift.
Except maybe an arm curl
..
Doesn't mean bug blokes are not stronger - just that small blokes can achieve the same result for less effort.

Mmmm but what about muscle fibre types?
Just idle speculation as I drink my morning coffee but do you maybe think that the fast v slow twitch muscle ratios come into play here? that there are a definitive difference in tall and short men? That may act as some sort of compensation for limb length?

Andrew, there's no evidence (as far as i know) that taller men have a different ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch fibres than short men.
It varies between men of course, but height isn't a factor.

> even most body builders are small, only the other day i read
> Ronnie Coleman is a midget
ronnie is 5'11 and would give any strongman a run for their money. he deadlifts 800+lbs FOR REPS (ive witnessed this btw) and he barbell rows for reps more than what many bb'ers (and some pl'ers/strongmen) squat. hardly a midget at 5'11, but yeah most bb'ers are under 6'. with a few notible exceptions - arnie (6'1) and lou ferrigno (6'5) spring to mind.
muscle and strength is more to do with genetics than size. it's also to do with proportions. for instance, if someone has short arms they would probably have a better bench press than someone with longer arms (less distance to move the weight).
it is generally accepted in the bb'ing community that bigger guys do have a harder time putting on muscle because:
* they have to put more muscle on to look bigger (18in arms on a 6' guy dont look that huge.. but they do on a 5'6 guy).
* they have to move the weight a greater distance for full range
* they have to eat a lot more because they already weigh more to start with due to their height (so are burning up more calories)

depends what you mean by "strong". if u mean lifting raw weight, then sure the bigger guys would be "stronger".
however, if you mean how many times your own bodyweight you can lift, then the correlation probably wouldn't exist.

Si, I don't really weigh myself that much to be honest but I think my current weight is just a shade over 14 stone...somewhere between 14-14.5 stone.
I think a competing weight for me would be around 12.5 stone at the most, jeez I'll look like a rake in clothes lol!
I assume that strongman competitors dont have weight categories? If so, ure lucky!
I know powerlifters have weight classes and that would do my head in, I know I'm at my strongest when I'm at my heaviest.
Yes, a stage![EEK!](images/smilies/eek.gif)
