I have a 96 Turbo and it's quick, just not VERY quick like a P1 et al.....

If you drive it properly and have the geometry set up correctly understeer is not a problem and indeed you can end up with controlable oversteer which is much more fun,as for the S2000, i've been head to head quite a few times with one across the Leicestershire twisties and every time especially in the wet I kick its ***.
My wifes hairdresser drives an s2000, surely enough said.

You obviously drove the wrong car m8 - don't judge 'em all by the same cover coz they most certainly are not !!
By the way where's this fast, nice sounding S2000 - never seen one !!

Good advice from Brett..... set up a new thread, tho' - and make sure you go out in a Scoob of the standard you're intending to buy. And, yes, MY99 onward are noticeably better than pre-99, 'specially the brakes.

perhaps you need to go the 'upgrade-uk-to-import-performace' route.
i've done it and it really transforms the car. bigtime. insure with a company that allows mods (e.g. L&V), then its not an issue. decat, remap, induction and other choice mods will see you flying
oh, the stereo system is now redundant as the exhaust track is too addictive...and when it pops and bangs...

Totally agree with last comments.
I have had a WRX with 260 ish BHP for about three weeks. I get the odd day where it doesnt feel fast, maybe weather etc.
With a scoob ur getting an all round package - with prodrive set up on my classic its great.
BUT my mate in his bugeye can scare the cr*p out of me cause he knows how to handle it - go out with someone knows what doing

Now now Simon that's a feckin lie!! I had a 1988 Montego turbo, and the feckin thing would send you from one side of the road to the other if you booted it on a wet road! Torque steer was feckin sh1te!! the handling was worse than sh1te!! and the brakes felt like they were made of feckin weetabix. Basically what I'm trying to say is that it was simply the worst car of the 32 cars I have owned in the last 30 years.

Did someone reply and say scoobs don't handle that well! What were you were driving before that handled better?
The AWD is a completely different drive than either front or rear.
Point to point on B roads the scoob will **** on anything that I've driven before.

I thought my 98 UK turbo was quick until I got the RA, its in a different league. If I drove a Zonda (or a "chipped" diesel ) then I am sure the RA would feel very slow in comparison.

corradoboy:-bits'n'pieces - your vtec engine blew up!!! And the dealer who tried selling me an S2000 reckoned that out of 15m vtec engines made, not one has failed. Oh well, first time for everything eh?
--------------------------------------------------------------
As has been said probably countless times, no VTEC MECHANISM has ever failed. The whole enigine isnt a vtec, vtec is the method of chaging the cam profile, hence not the engine block etc.

Thanks for the advise guys - I should have said that I wasn't actually thinking of buying the S2000, I was just lucky enought to have one for the weekend.
The Impreza was well warmed before it even left the garage - the dealer couldnt get the clamp off the Terzo in front of it so the wagon was running for a good 15mins before it went anywhere. It was also a couple of miles at 30mph before I tried anything fast.
Took it right round to the red line in 2nd and 3rd. This is where I was disappointed. Sadly I couldnt try any fast corners as the route the dealer took me on was mostly straight dual carrigway followed by 30-40mph residential areas.
I may go back at the weekend to try another - they have another wagon at a similar price with leather and a sunroof but slightly more miles.
I'll be popping to see the guys doing the Wycombe run this weekend at the Bicester Little Chef so perhps someone can take me out and show me how it should be done?

When you take an imprexa out for a test drive you need to take along some twisties, test driving on a dual carriageway is like test driving a concorde on the runway.

Goochie.
I noticed you live in Oxford m8, thats not far from me. I'll take you for a spin in my P1, hopefully that'll do it Its 280 bhp, but if you modded a uk turbo, you'll be close....
Handling, you might get a bit of understeer depending on the road surface. I'm certainly not disappointed with the handling on my car
Regards
Kev

I bought MY99 from new and expected to change it after 3 years. It is now over 4yrs old with 50K mls and still I get a buzz every time I drive it. I even get withdraw simptoms if I go on holiday. As standard a 99 will push out approx 215BHP but they are very restricted. To overcome this, I simply fitted a fully decat exhaust and K&N flat panel air filter. This not only gave me 253BHP but a much quicker pick up, a wider power band and sounds delicious. When it came to the handling I went for a new set of springs, Antlift kit and "Bump Steer". Now she drifts beautifully with hardly any under steer. If you are going to do track days, dont waste your money on front warped/cracked disks like I did. Go for the full monty, an AP Racing Kit (£1410+vat) 4pot. fantastic.
Good Luck.

Might have been something as simple as it was running on regular unleaded, ran my MY03 on regular for first couple of thou DOH! Sometimes felt like it had no boost at all. Switching to SUL (especially Optimax) made all the difference. But mine still has good and bad days, as in sometimes it feels a lot faster than others. Like most people have said, give another one a try .
I'm sure your faith will be restored, otherwise go for a Porker!

well when i test drove my 98uk impreza turbo i was well happy with the motor, sure you get used to it quite quick and need to mod exhaust etc..
But compared the the 1.6 gti i had before this absolutly killed it..
So try driving a saloon not a wagon..ur young why get a wagon?
DONT FORGET - I paid the same for my 98uk turbo with only 42k on the clock as my sister paid for a ****ey vauxall astra...
remember this aint no aston martin price here....

It took me a couple of months of ownership to be totally impressed with my MY00 wagon, sure it's fast enough on a roads as was my 200sx, but it's when you get on a nice windy B road with lumps and bumps and dodgy cambers that you begin to realise just what it was all the journos were raving about, the amount of confidence it instills takes some beating, definately a case of bottling it before the car does (certainly for me anyway!).

ScoobyKev - thanks for the offer mate, I'm actually in Bicester (just up the A34 from Oxford) I'd love to take you up on the offer some time, I can get you onto a private airfield too if you like
Why do I want a wagon? well I've just bought a house and my other half will shortly be getting a dog. They're also less of a theft magnet.

Geometry and tyres makes a massive difference on these cars, and even something as simple as tyre pressures can knacker a car's feel. If a car is sitting on a forecourt, the pressures may be way out?
The noise should be excellent - that can be fixed with just a backbox.
The brakes on a 98 may be only 2 pot (I MIGHT BE WRONG ON THAT!!!!), in which case you would be better looking at 99/00 with 4 pots. Even those aren't great, but the only time I got serious fade was when absolutely hammering it around milton keynes. Zero to quite fast to stop for roundabout to quite fast to stop etc... After about 20, stopping distances were increasing...
There is a difference between handling and grip. My old MY00 gripped wonderfully, but I was never happy at the limits of the car, as there wasn't a huge amount coming back from the car in my view. Or I'm just a crap driver
Try a few more examples, as you will find one that floats your boat and doesn't cost a mint to insure. Try Liverpool Victoria for insurance, as they're quite sensible in their approach to modifications by all accounts.
You can't get a dog in the back of an S2000
Cheers,
Nick.

From what I've read over the years on here, there's very little difference between classic wagons and saloons apart from practicality and wan3er magnet rating, try a search on the subject, it's been done to death!
