Jye,
Thanks for the input, I've read an awful lot about history and enjoy hearing people's views. Yes, the Jacobites invaded England. I believe they got as far South as Derby and turned around voluntarily in 1745 but they were only 5,000 men. The British Army (including its Scottish regiments) was overseas killing French men hence they met little resistance as the King had assumed that the Navy was sufficient force to defend his realm. Turns out that they weren't alot of use when the invader comes from within.
The thought of Highlanders running amok through England caused alot of panic but they had no hope of becoming conquerors. They were always too few in number and never won the support that they had hoped for. In the end, they were dispatched by a hastily gathered Scottish force, the King didn't even need to recall his armies from overseas.
I agree with the rest of your post but would like to point out that while it was the English who implemented the laws it was left to the Scottish lairds to enforce them. The facts really do seem to point towards the Highlanders being an isolated group within Scotland being egged on by continental Catholics (Spanish/French). Personnally, I reckon it would have been a good thing if the Jacobites had succeeded and rid England of its barmy German monarchs anyhow.
Have a good weekend, no matter where you hail from!
