i finished my training at hendon at the end of august, and just finished my 10 weeks training one to one with an experienced officer. as of tomorrow i am out on the street on team. i have already managed to get myself in some ****, and i would definitly say to consider carefully if it really is for you. i too came from the IT industry (self employed contractor) and i really miss the freedom of doing what i want, when i want. i have people telling me what to do, and a couple of times i've opened my mouth and answered back to them automatically without thinking, cos i'm not used to having people telling me what to do.

p.s it took 15 months from application to actually starting at hendon.
at the moment they are seriously backlogged and it will be a long way into the future for any start date they give out now.

Just finished a late shift, hence the time!!!!
I've been in the job 15 years now. It has changed a lot in that time. Theres far too much political correctness, best value, consultation, corporate image, staff appraisals, activity analysis, malicious complaints, government interference, petty paperwork and air-head bosses nowadays. But I still love it!!!!
Ultimately, if you really want to do it, then you will put up with all the sh*t that comes with it. Just one word of warning tho'. It will change you. You will make new friends and drift away from old ones. You will become very sceptical - you have to or you'll be cr*p at your job.
You will have some sad times but you will also have some hilarious times. The British Public never fails to amaze me with the stupid things they do or say.
If you need any more advice, let me know and i'll get in touch.

I know lots of coppers. Well ex-coppers, as most of them got p1ssed off with the job & made a career change. They all seemed to be stressed out & frustrated about the fact that they would go to great efforts (and paperwork!) to nick scumbags, only to see them walking the streets again the following week.
A friend of mine even left his job as a traffic cop on 30k to join the Fire Service on 17k

Dunno anything about N.Yorks. Most forces are recruiting but I think you will find it harder to get into most northern forces as housing is generally much cheaper. A lot of the southern forces are losing people in droves, who are transferring to areas where housing is cheaper.
What a lot of people are doing nowadays is joining the Metropolitan forces, finishing their probation and then transferring to another force. Once you have got through your probation, most forces will bite your hand off, coz they haven't got to pay to train you.
If your desperate to get in quickly this may be a way. Another thing to consider is the size of force. A small county force wont have as many specialist departments, so you will be limited in your choice of what, if anything, you want to specialize in, when you have finished your probation.
