If all the dross in this country could be shot...

Diablo - OK, so some people are intrinsically evil. But the percentage would be minimal. Most crime in the UK is committed by poor people. Poor people tend to have lower levels of literacy, often have a poor diet, and live shorter lives. Fine, treat them like ****, but be prepared to reap the consequences.
Tel - Easy to say, and I've no doubt you mean it. But if you were on benefit and say a chance to make some easy/shady money, it would be VERY hard to turn it down. Agree with you on grafitti and general vandalism, though it's quite easy to see that someone who feels excluded from society (no money, no future, told you're a failure at 18 years old) won't give a flying **** about it and wishes to express their anger.
This is not to condone crime; I don't. I can see why it happs though, and a lot of it is treatable, if we as a society were prepared to do something about it. The shame is that we're not.

Im with 289 on this one.
--Thing is 289, if i were under-privileged, i'd like to think i wouldn't stoop to thieving, either directly or via the State system--
How do you know this Tel? Have you ever been really, really poor? Did you come from a broken, dysfunctional family in some inner city housing scheme? Who were your peers? What school did YOU attend for your education?
This is the 'I want' and 'have now' society, created by the likes of Thatcher and her ilk.
Wasnt it the Mercedes advert they reckoned was responsible for a load of car jacking a few years back. The advert asked the question, "why wait", yes why wait for a £30,000 car, so they didnt wait, they just took.
People see arseholes with too much cash flaunting it in their face everyday and at every opportunity. Just because someone hasnt the brains, connections, or 'whatever' thats required to make a mint doesnt mean they dont want the life style that is portrayed every night on every TV in the land. Bloody lottery, grrrr.
Where there are 'haves' you will always have 'have nots'. Unfortunately have nots wont go away in a sociey which puts personal wealth on a pedestal above all else.
Trading Places was a great film, hey Tel hows the pork bellies and orange juice m8?

I think all to oftensaying you are really, really poor and that id you come from a broken, dysfunctional family in some inner city housing scheme are used as a cop out. It's and easy way off the hook. I'm not saying that there aren't cases where it is true, but people know that by playing the poor/dsyfunctional bit that they can get away with their crimes, due to these bleeding heart liberals who see it as a social injustice, bolleaux they know that the system is weak and are using it to their advantage.
Bring back flogging as an intermediate punishment!

no-one seems to have a real solution. ok, let's accept that the reason for crime and high taxes is too many bleeding heart liberals. fine. let's also accept that it's not realistic to bring back hanging or mass execution for benefits claimants. so what do we do? spend less money on benefits and more on prisons? will that really *work*? Increase the social divide between rich and poor - IMO that will lead to more crime. when do we stop, when 10% of the population is in prison? 15%?
any ideas?

Dont kid yourself. If you happened to be born in some of the hell pits I used to visit as part of my job I can tell you that its going to make a big difference to your life.
Lets face it, if your family, mother, father are actually 'living' in this sort of shi77y environment its not because they actually want to, no its for a reason and that reason will probably shape your life for ever.

I think as Telboy's dross free Utopia will never happen that we are all taking his asking the question a little too seriously.
It's an interesting question to pose and I feel people have spent to long discussing whether/why ask such a question rather than just answering it.
As for lotto extermination it's just that I can't help feeling that the type of people that do it religiously (presumably with the idea they are going to win it) tend to be pretty stupid. Perhaps execution is a little too harsh for just doing the lottery but add in a few other factors and I think we'd be better getting rid.

When I hear people say this I usually find they are very right wing.
I'm not saying you are, but whats the extreme flip side of the bleeding heart brigade, the *****?

Stupidity is not yet a crime in the free world NACRO. Live and let live over stuff as trivial as the lottery m8. Perhaps thats all they have, a dream.

It is also no excuse for letting your standards slip. I have been to and lived in places where incredible poverty and deprivation are far worse than any in this country so claiming that as mitigation is just a load of bolleaux, IMHO.

Ask yourselves this...
Is there a British Judicial System Punishment available to you personally today that you could honestly say scares the cr@p out of you......
I think in the majority of cases the answer is NO !!!!
And there's your answer, If it's not a worry then what incentive is there for those of a criminal disposition to stop or indeed not start Crime.
It's all Flucked up and isn't going to get any better I fear.

What standards are you referring to? If someone is born into said poverty, dysfunctional family etc, exactly what standards have they to begin with?
I'm sorry I dont see where your coming from with the standards bit.

Jye - i was being ironic with the bleeding heart bit. I was just pointing out that the people who like to advocate harsher this, tougher that, do not actually have a real answer to the problem.
but anyway, i think we should get rid of:
all Toytota RAVs, Honda CRVs and their drivers.
all cats and their owners
people who don't sing at football games
anne robinson
people who drop litter
people who talk too loudly when i'm reading the paper in the cafe
anyone else i don't like

So are we all thieving, swearing, unhygenic, selfish and respectless heathens underneath it all, with cash the only thing preventing these traits from surfacing?
Sorry, but i don't buy that.
