Doesnt the Motec require an air intake temp sensor wiring in ?

Is it really plug and play ?

Good stuff, just a couple of points, its not the aircon that makes the idle control not possible on a turbo, air con just uses two switched outputs, idle control needs two pwm outputs (main and slave), both M48 and M8 have only two, one is used for the boost control and one for the second ignition output on the M48 hence no idle control, you have to manually adjust the ISC on the earlier cars, the stepper motored engines are another matter but solvable if necessary.

The M48 has just been uprated to M48e, this includes some extra sensor functionality and enhanced 3d mapping to help boost control. Also extra logging capability and some bug fixes.

Think the point about road cars is that the ecu has been mainly used for race/rally ... there is a lesser degree of requirement there than for a road car, and so solutions have not yet been found in some cases. (but will be of course)

Narrow band/wide band/wide range, the sensor is only as good as the device reading it, different sensor types require different techniques, the results don't differ that much IME. As day to day the ecu will need to change in order to be at optimum every map needs to be less than perfect in order to allow for the weather variations we experience.

Plug and play implies no need to map, there will always be a need for extra sensors on a turbo car (charge temp, ambient air temp etc) but, as Aaron has said there is no need to modify the vehicle wiring to achieve the desired result. Each car will require its own individual map to run at its best, generic is quite a compromise, look at the factory ecu. Motec make up loom adaptors to suit each requirement, they will customise according to individual need. This is an additional cost that should be budgeted for.

There are several aftermarket ecu's that will run the car with or without using the maf .. standard practice in a rally environment from which background most were developed.

Motec technical support is good in the UK, not so good elsewhere, interesting that the Oz site is the only one that allows access to software updates, the others are "contact your dealer". At the price level the tech support should be there. (and is)

BTW stepper motor control was being used in Bosch management systems in early 90's
