Talizman I was referring to a colleague of mine who did exactly what you quoted i.e. wrote to Mercedes who provided evidence and he got off
Although the way S.Wales Plod bang on you would definately believe they have zero tolerance
Lets be honest 80 on a motorway is harsh to say the least.
Out of curiosity what county force do you work for?

Insurance companies might be interested in your points when quoting you to give themselves an excuse to raise the cost of cover.
You then let them know at renewal that you now have none, as they were taken off mid-year, and they aren't in the slightest bit interested in lowering the premium.
Robbing bástards all of them.

I'm agreeing with Mr Lewis!
Lets see a court convict a driver of a non-calibrated car for driving at 31 or 32 mph!!!!
Tough *******. Why wouldn't a court case stand? The camera is calibrated.

Surely it is the owners responsiblity to calibrate their own speedo?
Mass produced cars have speedometers that marginally over read, so that the speedo reads more than the cars real speed.
This is a more cost effective way than fitting calibrated speedos to every car. This is also more than sufficient for the purpose that a speedometer serves.
Put it this way, do you know anyone with a calibrated speedometer in their private car?
I don't.

Its like drink driving prosecutions for example.
The legal limit is 35 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 milliletres of breath, but if you provide a specimen between 35 and 39 microgrammes, you are not prosecuted to take into account discrepancies in the measuring device etc.
40 microgrammes and above, you are done.
Same as the Gatso tolerances really.

Yawn.
Who on here knows someone with a calibrated speedo on their private car? lol
Granny. Suck eggs. Teach.
I don't recall saying it had ANYTHING to do with drink driving.
I simply cited another example where there the law takes into account certain tolerances to allow for discrepancies in calibration, under which you are not prosecuted.
And? Whats your point?
I don;t think I could care less really.

It is ILLEGAL for a speedo to under-read the actual speed.
It's naff all to do with drink driving

There is less tolerance on a blood test for drink driving as it is more measurable
I disagree

I disagree. It's like comparing a blue monkey to a red dishwasher.
BTW, top work Jye, glad somebody found it.
Yours faithfully,
grease(not remotely blue)monkey.

FWIW, comparing the speedo in my car to a real time GPS based reading displayed an accuracy of +/- 1mph at 80mph.
Scoob's are well known for over reading as get round the dial

Just to clarify all speed measuring devices such as Gatso, laser, vascar have to allow for the speedometer error of 10% +3mph i.e. 36mph in a 30 limit.
All speedometers have to be within 10% of actual reading and most if not all manufacturers set theirs to read slightly over, to allow for margin of error in favour of the driver.
You do sound unlucky, but maybe this just shows that you are not very observant of speed limits or surroundings.

Maybe it's changed since gatsos, but for years it was 10% + 2. ie 35,46,57,68,79. A camera caught me in oxford a couple of years back, for doing 37 in a 30.

Gatso setting 43mph in a 30mph ?
I don't think so.
It is my understanding that the GATSO's and similar fixed cameras are more typically set to limit+10% plus 2-3mph.
Therefore a 30mph zone would more likely have the camera set to 35-36mph.
This should be more than enough to account for driver error, as typically to do 35-36mph your speedo will likely be reading 38+ mph anyway, which is somewhat beyond where it should be in that speed zone.
If you want the offical low down go look at ACPO Guidance

My "local" camera is loaded on a Friday morning with 800 snaps, enought to capture 400 offenders.
More often than not, the camera is fully used up by Saturday afternoon, even though it is not emptied till the Monday.
