Maybe they could replace them every 2 years or 30000 miles as part of the (anyway) expensive service?

Thumbs up

There are lots of smaller bits too like O-rings and so on, but I didn't include that.

I'll drop you an e-mail with the original fax in...

cheers

OK, they could replace it whenever they liked i supose, but they wont.

The MAF on the bugeye is a stronger unit, its just the MY99/00 that gets this quality item.

Rich

Sounds like you're getting a new short engine, like me I had one of my heads skimmed a couple of thou where the piston had hit...

50k on the clock? Get them to check the clutch & see how its doing - might as well change it a bit early if necessary & save labour in a few k miles more.

It is a co-incidence that we both have the same PPP, fitted at the same time & our engines both go within a month of the other - 'cept you have less miles... Just a co-incidence though!

So, how can you easily tell if a MAF is gone/going? Other than ECU reset & hunting idle that is...

Is there a replacement MAF that is more up to the job that could be used?

Also, can we start a list of people (on SN or known) who have had a MAF sensor go, resulting in engine failure & their MY?

PTMW! - 77500 MY99 PPP
ReBH - 50000 MY99 PPP

OK the major expense is a teilemotor which means partial engine (short motor), so they are replacing the whole bottom end assembly including crank, rods, pistons etc as a kit. thats the 1483 Euro item.
The next major unit is the motorditchtsatz which is a full gasket set including the head gaskets at 354 Euro. You then have 2 rocker cover gaskets plus lots of individual gaskets (ditchtung) (not sure why so many small gaskets?), 2 umlenkrolle zahnriem which are the cambelt idlers, 1 zahnriemen which is the cambelt. 3 x kuhlerfrostschutz which means 3litres of anti freeze, 4.5x oil i am sure you could guess.

I dont see a cylinder head mentioned anywhere?

Ok, my mistake about the cylinder head then. I'm impressed with your German . I'm still trying to source a short motor from somewhere else, maybe a slightly used one... would this be worth doing, or is it safer to get a new one?

James - good idea, I was thinking of doing the same thing. So I did Here

to be honest Richard, i think thats a very good price, i wouldnt go down the 2nd hand route based on the savings you might make as labour will go up to clean everything, plus its more of a risk.

My German isnt brilliant really, just a few terms i picked up.

You're right John, particularly as I can now get another 20% off parts. That means the whole thing should be done for 2640 Euros, or 1900 quid . Just need to confirm that the other dealer will take these parts...

Richard (1114 Euros less badly off hopefully! )

Red face

Update - here's my mechanic's quick observations on receiving the (bits of) engine:

The piston that's damaged has lost about three quarters of its ??? (Feuersteg - the upper part on the side of the piston down to the first seal). And the diameter has lost about 8mm. There have been high temperatures for a looong time. And all the other ones seem good.
(remember he's German, so we can forgive him one word of vocabulary he doesn't know )

Scary! I shall be getting back all the pieces, and will post pics then... (this will be mid Jan).

I'll keep you posted in the meantime how the rebuild's going...

Cheers
Richard

sounds like the top ring land has melted due to det. The Piston has 3 piston rings, the top one is there to provide the main seal for compresion. When you get very severe det, especially with cast pistons, the top edge of the piston is eaten away/melted, this usually stops where it meets the first piston ring.

It tends to do this from the edge of the piston rather than the middle because det/heat is easiest to propogate from a sharp edge.
