diesel,
No, for the simple reason, if I forget to renew my MOT, my insurance is invalid as my car is "un-roadworthy".
I'm not going to risk my prized possession being pranged or stolen simply because I can't remember 1 simple date.....
Would you be happy if I ran into the back of your Scoob, only to discover my MOT is out of date and as such, you can't claim me?
Small claims courts ensue..... not ideal is it?
Havent we all forgot to renew the tax (or god forbid the MOT) now and again?

If you were pissed and run up my **** would YOUR insurance company decline to pay ME because YOU may not have an MOT? That is BONKERS if true as they are totaly unrelated. A week without an MOT does not cause steering or brake failure - trust me I know and I do forget to get the bloody things on one of my 3 vehicles sometimes!!!!
Not looking forward to the reply...

Diesel,
Where did drink driving come into it?![Confused](images/smilies/confused.gif)
I never mentioned drink.....
The bottom line is, if an insurance company can get out of making a pay out, then they will grab the opportunity with both hands.
If your car does not have an MOT you are playing right into their hands, and giving them the ammunition to tell you to pi$$ off as your policy will be nulled.
What more do you want me to say?![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
To summarise.... you asked
ABSOLUTELY and DEFINITELY.
Forget the drink (I don't know where you got that from anyway) but if I have no MOT and I run into you, I am NOT insured. Bottom line!
The fact is, for your insurance to be vaild, you MUST have an MOT. It doesn't matter if it has expired by 1 day, 1 week or 1 year. Expired is expired. I'm not saying a car with a 1 week expired MOT is un-roadworthy. I am saying that your insurance is not valid.

God! I knew I wouldnt like it.
His MOT is HIS issue with HIS insurance company. They should claim anything paid out back from HIM. I have no contract with either. Why should the third party suffer? That is SO absurd and unfair and undermines the whole principle of inusrance in my book. No wonder people prefer a fine to the premium.
In fact, all the more reason to have proper coppers on the road - not these pesky speed cameras that dont even care if you have an MOT or Insurance. These are more significant issues than being 10mph over in the 'bitter' public's perception.
It is ironic that your frankness has underlined another policing issue negatively. Were there the political will, automatic cross referencing of DVLA Reg with Insurance with MOT with drivers licence would be achievable; but no! Resources are instead ploughed into developing speed cameras with integrated digital printers and an envelope machine and a soggy stamp licker...
That is not a moan at a Bobby, that's a moan at the money extorting system. We should ALL be trying to change this in the spirit of the Chief Con of Durham. His action improves PR and decreases public/police bitterness. Dont be resigned to it; keep fighting it.

When a car is checked out on the Police National Computer, it tells you immediately if it has an Insurance certificate in force, and very shortly the MOT database will be live too and linked to PNC.

No, because a driver will still have to produce his/her driving licence to ensure valid in terms of date, vehicle entitlement and endorsements.
Furthermore, the PNC tells you if a vehicle is insured, but not all vehicles require their own individual policy, for example a fleet policy or a trade policy.
Producers will remain I'm afraid.
