I need a lie-down after reading AJM's physics post

My old MGB had one of those Kenlowe preheaters already plumbed in. It was great -- just plug it in when getting the milk off the doorstep and 45 mins later the car started with a water temp of 15 degrees centigrade.

Put the kettle on, run outside, start car, set everything to "max", then lock the car with the spare keys, and go inside for your coffee and toast! Simple.

Then, as I managed to do once - Finish breakfast, put on tie, leave the house with smug expression as neighbours are all numb fingered, breaking credit cards and CD cases on the windscreens. Get to locked car with engine running - "oh ****, can't get into the car", return to house to get spare keys, but off course house is locked and house keys are on the car keys which are in the locked car with the engine running......

i keep a binbag in the car to put on the windscreen when its parked over night

move the wipers up a touch, stick the bag under and goto sleep

wake up
go outside, take bag off
start car and turn aircon right up
i have no problems with this

cardboard is also a good idea but binbags are easier to store in the car

I've recently found a fool proof way of not being bothered by frost and ice on a morning...

Start your own business and work from home
No more cold fingers and toes etc. on a morning and a fuel bill that is less than £10 per week

Sorry for gloating he he

Even better way - Send the other half out to warm up the car whilst you're getting ready, it works for me! Bless him he works nights so is normally coming in just as i'm ready to leave. I have to admit though, if he's not back i do go and start the car and leave it running for 10 - 15 mins, but my only neighbours are sheep either side! Don't really need to worry about theft as they can't get the car out the drive.

empty bottle of wine filled with warm tap water, go out unlock the car and start her up. poor water onto window screen. get in car use window wipers, water has gone, open front door and pop the wine bottle by the door for the misses when she leaves. get into car and set off.

longest part of that lot is waiting for the hot water tap to start running hot

Charles - thanks for that you've cheered me up no end

I remember going up to see the out-laws in Braemar 2 years ago and it was -18 - just after 2.00pm in the afternoon !

These soft southern poofs don't know cold - I should know I used to be one

I agree with the pouring of warm water over the screen & squeegying it off, I also have the car running while I do this as it allows my heated leather seat to warm up too

Volvos are great!

Question

Why is only Ford who make cars with "quickclear" heated front windscreens?

It's this time of year I wish I still had the escort!

I'll say it again - Ford own it! No one else can touch it without their permission

Are you sure?

So, who owns rights to heated REAR screens or heated mirrors?

I don't think its a "rights" issue as its not exactly an original idea! lol

I would assume that only one supplier has the technology to make it and they supply Ford. Ford in their contract with them would prevent them supplying it to anyone else without their consent as a condition of the whole deal and as the value of the deal is no doubt eye wateringly huge, the supplier isn't complaining.

The exception to this is Caterham who Ford have allowed to use the heated screen technology.

Happy to be corrected but I'm fairly sure of this.

As far as i know Ford have patented it and no one can use the idea - or sommat to that effect. I read it somewhere i think.
I assume it's gotta be sommat like that anyway cos surely all car manufacturers would use the idea if they could

RainX does help a bit -- frost does wipe off quite easily. Was only effective for a week or so though, and I couldn't be arsed re-applying it

I've tried the halfords night before de-icer which never seems to work very well. And it has a warning about it coming into contact with paint, which is a bit worrying.

Also, you can buy heated screens for other cars here http://www.gi24.co.uk/trolleyed/index.htm, although they don't list one for the scoob.
